HoRockets, thanks for giving an insightful, non-abusive response. Maybe a few of the other posters can take note. RocksMillenium, although you may think otherwise, just because you've posted 10,000 times doesn't give you the right to bash other users for stating their opinion. glen rice isn't a relative of yours is he Millenium?
Well its looks like minutes at the 3 are going to have to be split between Rice, KT and Nachbar. Rice may be the best shooter of the bunch, and it looks like Nachbar isnt too bad in that catergory, but if he is playing more than 20 minutes a game, guarding the other 3s in this league, hes going to get torched on the defensive end. Nachbar probably isnt much of an upgrade defensively over Rice, but hes probably better on the break. KT has them all beat defensively, assuming his feet are quick enough. He definately has the length to defend the 3. So even if you split the minutes evenly, its going to be a problem. Kenny is in his contract year, and he wont wont to come off a 15 point 7 rebound season to only play 15 mins a game. You have to get Nachbar in there for at least 15-20 mins. So where does Rice's playing time come? I wish I knew that answer.
rocketfat is too negative. That said, I also have doubt about Rice's contribution. Being injured on and off for more than 2 years, especially at his age, isn't a good sign. Few aging players can regain their prime form after extended period of frequent injuries. Ego might also be a problem too. Can he handle reduced PT when healthy? He has been known to whine about his limited role ever since he became the "third option" in LA. I consider him a bonus IF he can contribute at all. If his attitude acts up, the Rockets are better off moving him.
So me disagreeing with you and proving myself (like you complaining about Rice being "injured", yet the Rockets themselves saying it is precaustionary) means I'm related to Rice? I guess that means that you disagreeing with Rice means you owe him money right? And I never brought up my post count or your post count you did as a cop out.
I have to agree with rocketfat to a certain degree. I think Rice is done also. If he shows any value at all this year I would be pleasantly surprised. He also has a point about us getting overly excited about players returning from injury. I remember Olajuwon's last couple of years and the positive reports we got from training camp. Everybody so wanted to believe that he was going to be back to old form, but he never was. Put a stick in Rice, my bet is he's done.
Sorry everybody. I have been guilty of dogging Glen Rice. I was disappointed we did the sign and trade. Following the post by CarlitO, please enlighten me. Were we under any contractual obligation to Shandon Anderson at the point before the sign and trade for Rice???? I thought that Anderson was a free agent we owed nothing to. We did the sign and trade I thought - to help Anderson get a nice contract and so the Rockets could get a veteran pure shooter. I may be way off base on this - I remember good will to Shandon in doing this deal. At the time I was disappointed in this deal for Rice - Rice' contract used up 9 to 9.5 mil in cap space. I realize we are over the cap and will be for some time, but he does put us that much more outside the cap limit. I will stop dogging Rice and hope for the best.
shandon was a free agent. we didnt have to sign him, we signed him for the knicks. was our only choices to overpay anderson or overpay rice? i dont think so. rice will contribute. more then walt did.
What it was was that the Rockets promised Anderson they would pay him, and they ddi. Rice's money isn't that much of a strain on the cap, I'm pretty sure that entire 9 million dollars isn't effecting the cap, probably about 4 or 5 million dollars, since he wasn't a base year signing for the Rockets. Whether the Rockets signed Anderson or got Rice the Rockets were so far over the cap that it would have been worse not to get anything for Anderson instead of signing or trading somebody who could contribute. The thing I don't understand is why dog Rice? He's had a good attitude here in Houston, he doesn't complain, he's well liked by the players, and is respected and a veteran leader. He works hard, he is signed to a fat contract he could have easily have sat back and collected, instead Rice worked like monster to get into the best possible shape he could get in and produce. It wasn't a case of the Rockets overpaying Rice or Shandon, the Rockets didn't have a SF, they didn't have Nachbar, they didn't trust Walt, and they were so far over the cap that they couldn't sign a SF. So the Rockets had a choice, re-sign Anderson and hope he contributes, trade for Rice and get a draft pick out of it (something people forget the Rockets also received), or get nothing, still be horribly over the cap, and not have a SF.
I'm not sure how much Rice will contribute this year but I am convinced that it is based 100% on his health. If he is healthy we will be playoff contenders. I just remember how well we played when Walt was on fire a few years ago. And a healthy rice is much better than Walt will ever be. For the rockets offense to work, there needs to be a consistent outside threat to keep defenses from doubling on Cat, Stevie and Yao Ming.
You're wrong. After Hakeem left, we had all kinds of cap space, which we used on MoT, Moochie, and Rice. We were well under the cap before we did the sign and trade for Rice.
RocksMillenium- Thanks for the post - information. You have good points - good perspective. Really I feel bad for Glen Rice he has had the injuries - he cannot help it. I hope he has a healthy season- if so - he should contribute from the outside. When on fire at Miami and Charlotte he was a killer.
It would be nice. Facts are all that seperate bs opinions with well thought out posts. RoxMil did not become abusive to you, until you did. His first response to you was sarcasm to a crappy post on your part..you are the one who decreed that he had a stick up his bungholio... RoxMil has a record of well thought out posts about the Rox, hopefully you can learn to do the same. Just remember, these aren't the ESPN boards...we expect a higher quality of posts here.
Some of Rocketfat comments are actually fair observations, though rather inflammatory. There is a more politically correct way to say what he is saying. Something like this..."Rice is a major question mark this year and based on the past 2 years, he is an odds on favorite to spend time on IR this year. The hope is that the time will be minimal and he can maintain at least a 12 point average. If this happens, then we will be sitting nicely at the 3 and I hope this is the case, but I have my concerns." As far as RF goes, we should embrace his presentation style, because it helps us stay employed and making the big bucks
Maybe he should email his post to you and you can edit it and post your politically correct version the way you think it should be. We don't need freedom of speech around here...
Will Glen Rice's wife be calling Charlie and Rich on 610am complaining that her husband is riding the pine the whole game while KT and Bokie tear it up on the court? lol
