http://blog.wired.com/gadgets/2008/01/gizmondo-not-ri.html Gizmondo Not Rising From Its Grave By Rob Beschizza EmailJanuary 23, 2008 | 1:52:26 PMCategories: Anxiety Gizmondo, the portable game console designed to appeal to investors rather than gamers, is back. Or it will be in the bizarre fantasy world of whoever is behind this website , based on a $66 flash template, claiming the $400 slab is coming for another attack run. This act of brand necrophilia coincides with the release from jail of Stefan Ericksson, who was behind the whole thing in the first place. The makers burned through millions pitching the GPS-equipped, kid-tracking Gizmondo, now held to be a kind of VC shakedown scam rather than a viable product. Once more around the block, Stefan? Don't take the Ferrari. Gizmodo, the blog whose name was stolen to market this worthless piece of junk in the first place, naturally has strong opinions on the matter. It's pretty much debunked the whole thing already, the spoilsports.
http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/22/stefan-eriksson-released-from-jail-awaiting-expulsion/ --------------------------------------------- Stefan Eriksson released from jail, awaiting expulsion Just as expected, the former Gizmondo Europe director is free at last -- well, almost. Barely a year after Stefan Eriksson was sentenced to "three years" in the slammer, he's now been let loose from behind bars and is currently "awaiting expulsion." Purportedly, everything was nearly in place to ship him back to Europe prior to Christmas, but apparently, the Swedish consulate has taken its sweet time in preparing a new passport. What's still unclear, however, is whether the Ferrari Swede will be flown back to Sweden or Germany, but if all goes to plan, we'll be liveblogging the whole ordeal as soon as that news breaks (we jest, we jest).
I have an idea that would make Gizmondo EXTREMELY popular, even after its meltdown... ... ready for this?.... Make it OPEN SOURCED Sell the console in such a way that its operating system could be completely changed/removed/replaced. In fact, the source code (and compiled could) for the OS could be a download from the Gizmondo web site. Also provide documentation for the system's API and technical specs for all the hardware. And, to spur initial sales, Gizmondo could work closely with some game emulation developers (like emu developers for Nintendo 64 and Sony playstation) to port over a build of their code so that their emulators work on the Gizmondo. Congratulations! Now every internet geek out there will want to buy one! Being able to write their own code for the Gizmondo, open source communities of all kinds will hack away at it to meet their wishes. They'll also be able to play all their emulation games on a portable game device.
I don't think it would be a smash because it was open-sourced, but it certainly would spur sales. On the other hand, who would develop games for it if emulators were king on it and buying games was secondary?
It is indeed somewhat alive, Carl Freer, the Chairman of the previous company is trying to launch it again. They are using MY ****ING plan of making it somewhat open sourced. They tried to contact me but I said no thanks. I could tell you stories about Mr. Freer.....suffice it to say that he is not an honest man. DD
i guess i just dont get it. the device seems cool but it has too many functions and is trying to be too much at one time without being any one thing really well. sometimes less is more. wasnt that wildsweet&cool's idea
Well it was the plan I presented to the company in August 2006...... You know what else? He is a convicted felon, and his Wikipedia article has been edited to take out all negative stuff. The guy is shady.....SHADY ! I am ready to sue the crap out of them if they actually do anything significant, they owe me lots of shares, and I own all the games IP..... DD
That explains why Dada has been 'unemployed' for the past year You better watch your back, those Swedes don't mess around
I took 2 years off after that....Gizmondo buying my company was good as I was able to cash out, but overall it was a horrible experience. Great piece of gear, but working for sheisters......was not fun. DD
