The definition of planet set in 2006 by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) states that in the Solar System a planet is a celestial body that: 1. is in orbit around the Sun, 2. has sufficient mass to assume hydrostatic equilibrium (a nearly round shape), and 3. has "cleared the neighbourhood" around its orbit. A non-satellite body fulfilling only the first two of these criteria is classified as a "dwarf planet". According to the IAU, "planets and dwarf planets are two distinct classes of objects". A non-satellite body fulfilling only the first criterion is termed a "small solar system body" (SSSB). Initial drafts planned to include dwarf planets as a subcategory of planets, but because this could potentially have led to the addition of several dozens of planets into the Solar System, this draft was eventually dropped. In 2006, it would only have led to the addition of three (Ceres, Eris and Makemake) and the reclassification of one (Pluto). The definition was a controversial one and has drawn both support and criticism from different astronomers, but has remained in use. According to the definition, there are currently eight planets and five dwarf planets known in the Solar System. The definition distinguishes planets from smaller bodies and is not useful outside the Solar System, where smaller bodies cannot be found yet. Extrasolar planets, or exoplanets, are covered separately under a complementary 2003 draft guideline for the definition of planets, which distinguishes them from dwarf stars, which are larger.
Is that what they're calling T-Rexes now too Whats next? Dinosaurs didn't exist and they were really birds?
okay, i'm an idiot when i read the thread title i thought it was going to be some spoof on people who don't believe in evolution, dinobots never existed
Allo was my favorite too!!! close second is Bronto Thunder! first thing i thought of. was my favorite dinosaur when i was a kid. booooo science. next there going to tell me how magnets work. blows my mind.
Actually that is exactly what is going to happen. From the new scientist article that Gizmodo was referring to: "It was already known that triceratops skulls changed throughout their development, but not that the final result was a torosaurus. Torosaurus will now be abolished as a species and specimens reassigned to Triceratops, says Horner." So Triceratops isn't going away, the Torosaurus is. I think the same thing happened to Brontosaurus and Apatosaurus I believe as Apatosaurus name came first so they got rid of the Bronotosaurus
tolne57 is right. Torosaurus is the one going away. Triceratops is here to stay! "This classification found additional support in 2010 from John Scannella and Jack Horner at the Museum of the Rockies (Bozeman, Montana). After examining 38 skulls from the Hell Creek formation, Scanella and Horner concluded that the mature form of Triceratops did not even have a shortened frill. The specimens long classified as Triceratops, they argued, represented juvenile and young adult individuals while mature individuals had been incorrectly assigned to a separate genus, Torosaurus.[24] It was already known that the frills of Triceratops grew progressively longer as individuals matured; Scanella and Horner said their findings showed that this growth could culminate in the extended, fenestrated frill associated with Torosaurus. With the name Triceratops taking historical priority, they announced that references to the genus Torosaurus would be eliminated from Museum of the Rockies exhibits."
Man, F the Torosaur, more people know what a Bulbasaur is than a Torosaur. As long as they leave Tyrannosaurus Rex alone, no one should ever think about messing with that name. Leave it alone.
God created the sun, the stars, the heavens and the earth, and then made Adam and Eve. The Bible never says anything about dinosaurs. You can't say there were dinosaurs when you never saw them. Somebody actually saw Adam and Eve. No one ever saw a Tyrannosaurus rex. You can't prove dinosaurs ever existed. I feel it's far-fetched.
Is it true that Barney existed and they called him "Pedo-saurus"? <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/HIwJsTZ78nY&hl=en_US&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/HIwJsTZ78nY&hl=en_US&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>
