Mo Williams would be a great backup pg for this team, but not a starter. Too often he'll look to create a shot for himself off the dribble instead of running an offense. Maybe it's because Milwaukee has no offensive scheme, but TJ Ford sure made it run a lot better than he did last year. Williams reminds me of Francis, but not as talented. And rafer's been playing great. I've been impressed with his defense all year, even when he gets lit up by people shooting right over him. But he's got to take higher percentage shots. He can handle the ball all day, but he can't create any contact on his drives. Instead, he do some crazy floater or switch hands and those just aren't likely to go in. He settles for those way too often. Once Yao gets back, let's hope his shot selection improves.
I support Skip 110% He's the best we've got, and hey he isn't great, he's a pretty lousy shooter; but he plays sound defense, can run an offense smoothly, and he makes solid passes. If he was not so terrible shooting wise he could even be considered a pretty good PG outside of just our team. The fact is though, Skip is the kind of passing, ball handeling, offense running, defensively sound PG we need... so his obvious deficiences are minimized since his best qualities fit what the team needs pretty well. Yeah, we'd all love to have Yao/D.Howard/Battier/T-Mac/Nash but that aint gonna happen, not even close. When you get two superstars on a team, an olympian who may just be the best defensive specialist in the league, Bonzi Wells who is gonna show up sooner or later if he stays healthy, and the best backup center in the league... what are the odds you're gonna have great players at ever spot? I'd like for our team to be more balanced but the nature of our team is overwhelming force with Yao and T-Mac, Battier anchoring the defense, and the rest of the role players simply doing their job. It's an effective system for the most part but can leave you wanting for better players that actually have to start. All that said though, there really are just some pgs, but not as many as one might think, I'd take to start over skip. That's because despite another player being more talented I don't know if he'd fit our system as well as skip does. Skip makes some dumb, dumb, dumb moves sometimes but for the most part he does his job well. Everyone is way too hard on the guy but I for one typically give him the benefit of the doubt. I think more of us should, as well! I'm glad someone made this topic cause really, for every one thing skip does wrong he does two others right. So give em hell Skip, cause all the haters will be kissing your ass when you hit a clutch 3 in the playoffs in game 7 against the Mavs to win the series, and even if that is forgetten a few weeks later because we'll be too busy sobbing about losing in the WCF to PHX... I know you got it in you, son. Long live the New York street balling legend, Skip2myLou.
Rafer deserves props when he shoots well, but when he shoots poorly, he should be yanked and VSpan should be given a chance. Rafer is not a superstar or even a star that he can just keep throwing up shots when he is off. If he goes 1 for 5 or 0 for 6, he should be yanked and his minutes curtailed for that particualar game until he finds his shot. You put him back in after a break, if he hits a shot, keep him in there. But if he misses again and is now 1 for 6 or 0 for 7, then yank him, and play someone else.
rafer got his props after the 3 good games he had (although pg's shouldnt be shooting that much)......he got his props...but when people say he's the best fit for this team and no trade had to be made cuz of chemistry issues...thats where we have problems w/the arguement on rafer
You seem like somebody who loves to complain about what Rafer isn't and how he isn't a fit for this team...what qualities do you want in a PG for the Rox...lets see them listed out or perhaps a player who posseses these skills.
1) able to hit open jump shots, esp 3's at a very good clip. ie good consistent shooter. Alston is a streak shooter and not good nor consistent. 2) protect the basketball..minimize turnovers 3) play solid D 4) have the quickness to match up to speed of other point guards 5) be able to throw an entry pass to yao/get ball to t-mac 6) be able to drive and finish/kick when defenses crash on your open jumper To me rafer is poor at 1, fine at 2, average at 3, average at 4, good at 5, below average at 6. And 1/6 are a lot more important than the areas he is good at for a healthy houston rockets team. Derek Fisher is an example of a good fit for this team at the point at full strength. I know he is a buzz word around here, but Mike James is another player in the mold of what the position needs at full strength. Chucky Atkins at least hits open jumpshots more consistently and would have been a solid platoon option with rafer. If head only had any basic dribbling/passing skills he would be guy at full strength. But he doesn't.
