Then come back and view the thread "In this Thread Every Post must have a picture 2.0". I recommend it. :p

The difference being we get equally riled up about any victim of drunk driving, we tend to put animals on different levels. I think that is the point drox is trying to get across, why don't we get riled up when we see anything similar happen to any animal? I could be wrong but that is what I am getting out of his posts.

Most responsible pet owners feed farmed frozen euthanased dead mice to carnivores.

I think people are less prone to feel sorry for an animal that they associate with filth or belongs immediately to the "rodent" group. I'm not saying they are any less of an animal, but I wouldn't want to feed my hamsters to a snake or to piranhas. As for traps, if I have mice we would use traps that spring to break their neck. I do not care for the glue traps or box traps that causes them death through starvation or dehydration. That is inhumane.

As for some taking pleasure out of (say killing cows) as someone has so eloquently pointed out. I'm not sure, for I've never seen the videos or know the people individually, for I'm sure there are some who take pleasure in killing. I just know that when I worked in the morgue, the mood was rather...odd. There was joking and some things that I thought were horrible to say when I first started working there, but after awhile you develop an attitude adjustment, not to disrespect the dead, but to handle the fact that you are dealing with dead people. Mayhap it's the same for those who spend their lives killing animals.

droxford wants to be weighted down and thrown in a river. that is what i am hearing.

hey...it happens, droxford. no sense in complaining about it while you lay at the bottom of the river. it's not right, though. oh yea...it was videotaped as well and put on youtube where it went viral. you know...this stuff happens. your perps relished in it and are getting off at the number of hits they are getting. they're famous now...and you're famously sunk!

no big whoop, though. your family is fine with it...cuz this stuff happens and they know your viewpoint on this type of stuff. it's wrong but it happens. we won't get too riled up, though. don't worry. ;)

people need to keep their damn sick acts to themselves if they want to play this game. otherwise, they deserve whatever wrath they get if they try to put it out there for all to see. should we thank her for showing us how she gets off on cruelty to animals? you are right, though. she could have just done this without taping it...and noone would care because we are not seeing video of it. it's the fact that she did tape it and expose it to the world that riles everyone up...along with the act itself.

Key word being most. I have posted videos that show differently and hundreds if not thousands are available on YouTube and the Internet that show live prey being used. Where is the outrage in this?

I'm really playing Devil's advocate because I don't agree with what she did with the puppies but it is not a paramount issue with me either. Like I said, stuff like this happens all the time. It's bad, but what can be done about it?

Lets get one thing out in the open: many humans can relate to a dog or a cat. A lot of us have them and they are like family members to us. So of course some of us are going to be more offended if a case of animal cruelty involves dog/cat.

I can't relate to a ****ing mouse or a cow or giraffe. That said, I am all for severely punishing any form of animal cruelty.

    Okay, how about:

Why should we get upset about puppies being tortured and killed when people kill flies with flyswatters every day?

This whole argument (which is actually pretty silly...) seems to be more about an academic exercise than common sense.

Who said anyone condoned any of that?

The difference is just the nature of the video. When an animal expresses emotion (i.e. hearing the dogs whelping as they get thrown in), it resonates with our own emotions in a much stronger manner than seeing a mouse.

Why do we not give a **** about stepping on a bug? Because we have no emotional connection to it. To us an ant is a small bug that occasionally bites us and nothing more. The fact that it is living is irrelevant.

Our emotional connection to animals (in many cases, not all) scales proportionally with the animal's ability to express its emotion. Add to that, these are dogs (which many people have including myself) and on top of that they are puppies (and humans generally empathize even more with babies, puppies etc.. as they are they are the most vulnerable) and you see why you get such a reaction.

This video appeals to our sense of right and wrong in a manner that other videos dont so I really dont see whats shocking about this.

Lastly one more thing is that dog's are sentient creatures. A rat (for the most part) operates entirely on instinct. It isn't capable of the type of thought and logic that a dog can engage. A dog is capable of developing a relationship with a person (and many people know that because they have dogs). A rat is well a rat. 99% of its actions are simply hard wired into its brain. It's the same with say a chicken. A chicken can scream when it is killed in a farm. (and I'm not condoning animal cruelty I'm only speaking to the ethics of killing animals) But a chicken isn't sentient. It's not capable of anything beyond the instincts that are hard wired from day one.

As a result, its easy to see how we can connect with a dog in a manner that is uniquely distinct from say a chicken. That's not to say that sentience is a brightline. Creatures have varying abilities to engage in independent thought outside of instinct but dogs show a tremendous amount of loyalty to a person that is unique from many other animals. Consequently its easy to see how we care more about violence done to the creature that we can connect to in a unique and emotional way than the chicken that lives a programmed existence.

That's not to say I am ok with killing animals for sport and I myself am a vegetarian. But there is a clear ethical distinction between violence against some animals and violence against others. That's not to say even though chickens arent sentient, we should engage in brutal and horrific practices in farms but it speaks to the question of killing them in general.

I don't want to get in too deep with this, but human society has made dogs their general choice for pets. So human society of course will be outraged when an animal that is considered close enough as their own family when it's treated with senseless cruelty. If that girl threw a family of small snakes into the river it wouldn't be a big deal. Cows are raised for food, not dogs (not in American culture at least). Lions aren't generally kept as pets either, although killing it for sport has been cracked down.

looks like R0ckets03 said what I was trying to say.

Let me ask the panel here: What should have been the humane thing to do to those puppies if the girl was telling the truth about them having parasites?

Obviously some do. Remember the PETA thing with President Obama?

Like I stated previously, people obviously get upset over dogs, cats, etc. because they place more value in those animals than say a mouse, frog, or fly. Does that make it right though?

As I and others have stated, similar methods are used across the US in rural locations. Sure they're not videotaped but it happens. I don't agree with the girl's actions at all but I do see both sides of the argument.

So, you people will b**** about this chick killing puppies, but don't give a damn about people taking enjoyment in feeding mice to their snakes, killing lizards for fun, or killing animals for the sport of it eh?

    whatever

    And Dubious
My watch cost more than $10 and you can't have it. And if you kill me for it, you'd better cook and eat my corpse because that's the only way people here won't b**** about it.

My grandmother took a kitten once and wrung its neck, quickly to kill it. I was not there, nor would I have been if I knew, but it is more humane than dropping them into a river for them to drown. Perhaps a gunshot to the head would have been better as much as I hate to say it.

I will say that feeding someone's snake with mice does not bother me. It is the natural order of things to begin with. Be it in the wild or not, the snake will eat the mouse if it found it. I don't kill lizards or know of anyone who does, though I'm sure that people do it. There is no reason for it to be done. As far as killing animals for sports I don't agree with it. But there are those who hunt and then eat those they kill. We regularly pay the processing fee for a deer that my Step Father has shot. It's healthier and less expensive than ground beef.

And I know that people kill animals cruelly all the time. It's not necessarily about the fact that she killed the animals. But did so in a way that is heart wrenching. Who video tapes and laughs while doing it? It would be a completely different situation, I would say, if she hadn't videotaped it and had done it with a serious attitude.

So are all animals equal in your mind? Do lizards equate to dogs in your worldview?

I didn't compare anything about bugs but if you look at the videos you can hear those pinkies, mice, and rats chirping their ears off when being eaten....alive. But some people do get upset about the killings of bugs. Living is irrelevant now in certain cases? Doesn't every living thing serve some type of purpose?

Some animals are capable of forming those same relationships. I know a guy who has a pet raccoon and a pet deer who pretty much act like dogs. My girlfriend's father had a pet squirrel that could recognize him and would hitch rides get treats, etc. They're not programmed different, dogs are domesticated just like a bunch of other domesticated animals but if you let it loose in the wild they can and do become feral and lose that ability. Plenty of animals besides typical pets are capable of that.
