I only have daughters, but I've thought about that question as if I had boys. I don't think I'd let them play. As much as I liked hitting people, it's now a different game. Too may bulked up dudes. My senior year, there was nobody on our team over 230 lbs. -- and we were ranked #1 in the state for a good portion of the year (until we lost our all-state MLB on the first play in a playoff game against Beaumont Hebert).

Anyway, the latest info on helmets pretty much sealed it for me.

It's not an absolute, but there are a ton of reasons why someone would not want to be married to someone paralyzed.

Costs, care, physical attraction, inability to have own children, etc. etc.

At least she's not paralyzed from the neck down. It still sucks but I think having mobility in your arms makes a huge difference.

True and maybe I'm in the minority but whether they were paralyzed when you met them or not wouldn't you still want to be with them because you LOVE them.

    Maybe that's just me... *shrug*

Agreed. This is a huge test of their "love". I wouldn't blame him one bit if he couldn't see it through. Hell, these are young people. He's not really in a great position to deal with this as they were just getting started. Plenty of people bail when something like this happens. It's a lot to ask of anyone to support a paralyzed person and the fact is he is taking on most of that burden. I commend him for wanting to see it through but I would not be surprised if he couldn't handle it at some point and got out. Sometimes, love isn't enough. Then again...sometimes it is and he seems to want to make it work. So, it could very well work out. I don't think it would be very wise to get married at this point if getting married is going to cost them much needed coverage, though.

We were at a party one time when I was a kid. A bunch of us kids were in the pool, and some adults. My dad (a big guy, at 6'3", 270) and another guy (I'd say about 50 lbs. smaller, and a good 5 inches shorter) start horsing around. They're buddies, have known each other forever. Nobody thinks much of it. All of a sudden, my dad flips the guy up over his head and into the water. Not a smart idea considering the water was maybe five feet deep there.

So the guy goes into the water and comes up floating face down. He was a prankster, so we just pushed him over to the steps of the pool and kept joking around. I was absolutely terrified. Everyone else "knew" he was joking. About two minutes later, he wakes up, started spitting out water wondering where he is and what happened. Apparently, he really hit his head on the bottom and was unconscious for a minute or two. I'm so glad nothing serious happened to him. For him and for my dad. He went to bed and slept for a couple hours and was fine. Scary stuff.

I read this story and remember a philosophy class I took years ago when they were discussing the factors involved in living 'a good life'...needless to say there are a lot of factors involved but probably one of the biggest factors was simply 'being lucky'. You could do everything right in your life, but all it takes is an instant of being in the wrong place at the wrong time and it can all go to hell.

The fact that we're all here in generally good health with generally good lives (well most of us I hope) up to this point is quite a miracle in itself.

I've seen dozens of cases like these and I'm sure everyone of them thought something like that would never happen to them. Unfortunately her life from here on out is going to get exceedingly difficult...the medical costs(a lot of extra stuff is not covered) and time it takes to care for a quadraplegic is staggering. Constant trips to the hospital because of infections(urinary, respiratory, skin, etc.), loved ones having to get trained to change urinary catheters and tracheostomy dressings...and probably colostomy bags after awhile. Someone will have to be with her 24/7 from now on. Nursing costs, equipment costs(and upkeep), costs of medicine(which will increase as time goes on), doctor visits, procedures, home visits and assessments...unless the science teacher has a trust fund somewhere something like this could have him filing for bankruptcy in a few years, 10 if he's lucky. It's depressing thinking about the chain of events in store for the poor fella :(

What a terrible thing to happen. Plenty of people get pushed into pools, but usually it results in a broken cellphone at worst. I really can't even imagine that happening.

My son's best friend broke his C5 and C6 doing a flip off of the tall cliffs -landed wrong. He immediately lost his legs but had his arms long enough to swim up for 1 grasp of air...then his arms stopped working and he sank back down. Talk about that giving you nightmares. His friends in the nearby boat pulled him out. They fixed him up with bone graphes and screws. He was walking in a week.

Less than a month later, my other son's friend (same school but a year younger) did a dive into an above ground off a trampoline that they drug over to the pool. He didn't break his neck but jammed it so bad it shifted. The operated and popped it back in place. C3-C4. I think he expected the same thing as the friend above - walk away. But this one wasn't such a happy ending. He can barely use 1 arm. He has to have his catheter and other side changed every hour or so by his mom. He just turned 16 a week before the accident.

We're very close to both families. Very sad when something like that changes your life forever - in the blink of an eye.

I'd be inconsolable if it happened to me. That's just awful.

Hubby straight up told me that he would not want me to be with him if he got paralyzed because it is not fair to me. That made me to think that he would leave me if I ever got paralyzed. Tough stuff to think about.
