It's one thing if these guys do it in a group setting or a small session at the combine, but if it was an individual workout where he flew specifically to Houston to perform, I would ask why. The Rockets pick 14th and 16th ... I don't know why an agent of a consensus top 3 pick would send their client to run through a physical workout for a team that has no chance of picking them. I'd have to have a good reason to do it.
I think it's safe to assume that the Rockets applied to interview a lot, if not all guys projected to go in the lottery. Robinson is just one guy they got granted access to interview. It's similar with workouts. I'm sure the Rockets would love to workout all the top-5 picks, but the players agents aren't going to let them. If the Rockets indeed will bring in MKG, they might have convinced MKG's agent that there's a good chance they will trade up and he's one of the guys they'd be seriously looking at.
IIRC, there was a rumor that the Rockets were trying hard to get one of the top PGs in that draft. They were offering a package of Brooks and Battier.
I agree with this. I don't know how many times I've thought something might be an indicator of a potential trade and it ultimately proved to amount to nothing... that may be the case here as well. But IF MKG was coming to Houston for a private workout (the Rockets, unlike many franchises, do not talk about who they are working out and keep all that info confidential, so it's hard to confirm that right now), it's not totally unreasonable to think it might be because there is a chance the Rockets could trade up and the agent knows that. It's more reasonable to think that than to believe the agent doesn't know what he's doing and is putting his client at risk for basically nothing (MKG is represented by CAA Sports Agency... the same group that represents LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Carmelo Anthony).

Guys, the Rockets work out and interview everyone out that they can, not because they believe they can reasonably trade up to get them in the draft, but because they are methodical in doing their homework on all incoming players. This helps them assess what kind of people they are, and first hand evaluation of their skills, potential and work ethic. It's safe to say they hold on to this data to help assign value for a later date if the opportunity arises for the Rockets to "buy low" in a trade.
Marvin Williams looked like a GREAT player, T-prince like at spreading floor with a high flying josh smith body....please YOU nor ATL knew Paul would be that great....PG are in the tons....Marvin's have super high demand low supply...PG super high demand high supply....low supply of superstars period... Yes I know ATL had a load at the PF position, but like I said a surplus of "low supplied players" could induce a STELLER trade. I will never rag on ATL for that. JJ would have taken away the ball anyways from CPoverrated.
If I was a top draft prospect staring down the barrel of getting drafted by the Bobcats or similar, I'd probably be pretty open to working out for a half-decent team like the Rockets with the hope and prayer that they can swing a trade.
Marvin did not improve his game even an iota since hes been in the league. MKG is a different player and person...if he works hard enough he can be very very effective. He may not be a franchise player, but he can be a great piece to the team that others would kill for. he gives us that "nasty" athleticism and rugged tough winning mentality that we so desperately need.
Absolutely... I know why the Rockets would want to do that... but why would MKG want to? Nothing to gain, plenty to lose. Agents of players that are consensus top 3 picks don't want to ship off their clients to private workouts to teams holding picks in the teens. There has to be something to gain, in my opinion. And that doesn't mean a trade is imminent... but the Rockets could have convinced the agent by simply saying there was a chance they would trade up. I don't see a reason to give a team intel on that kind of player unless there was a chance they could select that player -- it's a win for the team, nothing but potential lose for the player. In MKG's case, he's trying to be picked #2 in the draft and not fall to #5... those are his goals. 14 and 16 are another universe. All I'm saying is if the Rockets were granted a private workout in Houston of Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, I'd want to know why. First have to find out if the info is even accurate.
Why would CAA want their client in Houston. All agents hate Rockets cuz Morey has no clue! Ingram told me so!
Right. Agent could say, "Go down there and blow the Rockets away with your workout, and maybe they'd then be willing to give up X, Y and Z for you at 2." Rockets may know the price it takes to get in the top 5... maybe now they're trying to determine if it's worth that. Who knows... but the agent has to know something or he's wasting his client's time, potentially dropping his stock and putting him at a risk of injury for very little.
THANK you. ^^ If the guy is actually risking an ankle tweak or knee sprain and screwing up whether he's drafted 2nd or 6th, then we have a chance for the #2 pick but need to know if he's worth it. (If we clear out cap space in the process, he would be; if we have to take on a crap Charlotte contract, well, he still might be, given his motor and his D.) And yes, I'm sure he's, "Don't let me go to Charlotte, don't let me go to Charlotte, pleeeeeeeeeeeeeease, I'll do anything, I'LL **** YOUR ****!!!"
And so they have their client risk injury for the off-off-off-off chance the Rockets can nab him in 4 or 5 years?
