IIRC, Burress was jailed for criminal possession of a weapon since he did not have a New York issued concealed handgun license. Do we evev know if Arenas had a license or not?

This is a really stupid situation for Arenas to be in...why pull a gun on someone when you know you're not going to use it?

If the reports are correct and the altercation occurred within their locker room you know damn well Arenas isn't that stupid to shoot someone, much less his own teammate. So why draw?

They must think they're cool or something.

Most contracts have a no gun policy I believe... Could be a blessing in disguise for the Wiz... Wizards need to read the fineprint of that contract and terminate it...

Plax also was in trouble for firing his weapon. However I know here in Texas, displaying a gun at all, especially in a threatening manner is a crime that can end in jail time. I would assume that the laws in DC are at least as strict. Additionally a lot of states consider public gatherings (an nba game) to be a restricted place meaning no one carries except Law Enforcement Officers. I am not going to take the time to look up the DC laws, but the point being regardless of whether he was licensed or not, both players could be in serious trouble.

Not to mention that even if Arenas was kidding and knew the gun was unloaded, how did he know Crittenton wouldn't get and fire a gun of his own?

Also the NBA has another potential gambling disaster on their hands, which will be its own interesting story.

On a side note, since DC isn't actually part of a state and subject to state regulation does that make any crime a federal issue, especially one like this?

Wow, that's just crazy. If the basic allegations are true, Arenas and Crittenton are suspended for the season. There's no way Stern would settle for less. He's been trying to make the NBA less of a thug league, and pulling guns over a debt is definitely not the image Stern wants fans to have. That is was over a gambling debt just adds tons of fuel to the fire.

The Wizards have to be looking at whether they can terminate Sub Zero's contract. If he gets convicted of a felony or has to do time, I think they'd have a serious case. Especially since the crime was committed after a game, essentially on company time. The Wizards are such a mess, and Arenas is so overpaid. Even if Washington wasn't morally outraged, it just makes so much fiscal, basketball sense.

Total speculation, but if the gambling was over basketball, Arenas and Crittenton had better watch out. After the Donaghy affair, Stern will crack down on any NBA gambling by league employees with a Sledgehammer of Justice. If they betted on their own team for serious money, I could see lifetime bans. If they threw games, obviously they would be gone for sure. But even if there was no intent to throw games, Stern would make an example of these guys to show that Donaghy was an isolated incident.

one would think that a chucker like gilbert would require something a little more heavy volume rapid fire than just a simple handpiece.....something more along the lines of an uzi for instance

Great post. You are 100% correct. Gilbert is sweating bullets right now...:)

Talk about wasted potential... What an awful career he has had thus far, and this could very well end it... The wrath of David Stern will be in full effect...

    From Bill Simmons twitter...

sportsguy33 FYI: if Gilbert is convicted of a felony, the Wiz can void his horrific contract ASAP. No wonder they reported it so quickly!

This would be HUGE for the Wiz and could help begin blowing up the team...and hopefully speed up the process to trade Butler for TMAC lol

Did anybody find it a strange coincidence that a team formerly called the Washington Bullets would be the first NBA team to have teammates pull guns on each other?

If's Gil gets charged, the Wizards might be able get out of that huge albatross contract on an injured player. He's the East's version of T-Mac, overpaid and always injured.

I don't think the gambling is such a big deal, because it was probably a poker game or it was something like that Arenas vs. Stephenson 3 point shootout on Youtube which was apparently for $20k. It probably wasn't betting on NBA games.

Drawing a gun on someone might land Gilbert in jail, however.

It's a matter of huge concern. It pains me to see this. I hope the league will come down very harshly on this. It's intolerable. I was hoping that Arenas would make a recovery and come back to around 70-80% of his old self, even though I had doubts about that.
Both players need to be punished if this is true.

No matter what happens, If Gilbert drew a gun on his teammate like this, I would be AMAZED if Stern does not boot him for the season...

Yeah reading previous posts in such a long thread is so time consuming and annoying.

This is totally incomprehensible that two people could possibly be this stupid. Agreed with those saying that the Wizards should look to simply terminate his contract and rid themselves of their own boneheaded decision to throw $100M+ at the guy.

Stern is going nail these two. Scribo is right that he's been aiming to eliminate the thuggish perception that the league used to have. Wow, i'm almost excited to see how this plays out because i'll be shocked if either is allowed to play another game this season -- at the very least.

I agree that there is a huge difference between poker and putting money on an NBA game (non-Wizards would be bad, but a Wizards game would be white hot). However, the league is might sensitive about gambling period right now after the Donaghy affair.

No matter what the debt was over, the gambling is an enhancing factor to this incident. I just can't see these two getting away with less than a year suspension for the guns drawn in a locker room (team property, hence league property) with an unsavory gambling association.

I'm not as familiar with Chitterton, but the Wizards have to be plotting how to jettison Arenas over this incident. Even if they like Chitterton, the Wizards would have to be willing to axe him as well. They don't want to give Arenas any ammunition for an appeal. "Why did I get terminated, but not Chitterton? He pulled a gun too." The Wizards would surely head that off and fire both of them.

I know exactly what you mean... I am almost giddy with anticipation! Not only that, but this puts the Rockets in a FANTASTIC position.

(Not to mention I just grabbed Randy Foye off waivers)

You know the Whiz lawyers are working overtime trying to figure out a way to terminate Gilbert's contract.
