Yeah, like I ever go out anyway! Actually, I really do want to come see you guys. I've spoken with her on a number of occassions, even sat in her living room over in West U. The guys in the Basics knew her much better than I did. The incarnation of the Basics you are talking about happened before me. I joined them in 1994 and was with them until about 1998. Ours was a slightly more Latin version. We were popular and did some cool gigs, but the version before us with the original members is still the one everyone thinks of. The singer and guitarist were really the band and everyone else after the original bassist and drummer left were pretty much hired guns, but it was fun. And, yeah, I think they were in the running for a Latin Grammy but that also was a couple years before me. Small, kind of a theater type setting. It's nice and maybe even slightly upscale compared to your standard bar. The good thing is no smoking in the main room which is nice. The bad thing is that the owner gets fussy if the stuff it TOO loud so we end up doing semi-acoustic stuff when we play there. They usually have good singer/songwriter stuff, folk and jazz there.
A really close friend of mine was in a band called. "Beware the Green Monkey" They had label interest and were going to sign when bang...breakup...I have their CD, they were huge in England at the clubs in Manchester in the early 90s. Now my pal is in the video games industry producing a game called Bounty Hunter. But his music still makes me smile. A couple of lyrics from them.... "She sits across from me riding the 8-23, bleach blonde hair with roots as deep as she will never be....." Good stuff man. DD
Jeff, I'm thinking about taking my girlfriend to the Saturday night show. How would you describe your music? Do you have any demos I could download for her to listen to? Thanks, B
I knew these four guys a few years younger than me that formed a band(they really sucked and to preface this story these guys were very dense, as well). One day I was sitting around talking to 3 of the four guys and they were like we need a band name. So we started brainstorming. We went through things like "the Strawberry Pickles" and "the Monkey Farts". I told them that I always name my Fantasy Football teams after a quote our school's AD makes during 2-a-days. He is from Nebraska and always says something goofy during practice so I choose something like that for a name. My total intentions were for them to find something funny or amusing that somebody said. So I used my current team name which happened to be "Jerry's Kids"( I know it isn't PC but the way it was said at practice was quite funny and I play fantasy ball with several coaches). Well these dimwits said yeah that would be a great name. we'll be "Jerrys Kids"(they don't know how fitting that would really have been). So we started discussing it and all of a sudden I yelled "Wait you can't use that name". They were like "Why not" and I wa slike the guy that isn't here has a brother that is mentally r****ded and he probably would be mad with that name. I said you guys need to be somebody else's kids. And these maroons were like "Yeah we can call ourselves "Somebody Else's kids". I gues sif you were there and knew the kids in the band it would have been funny. But that is just my band name story. Oh and the band lasted about 3 weeks before they disbanded. Somehow though thtey actually played a gig. CK
Nothing to download yet. We are making a record this summer. The music is basically pop music with some alternative and some folksy elements. Since this show is generally acoustic, I'd say that comparisons to guys like Duncan Sheik, John Mayer, David Gray, Jason Mraz, etc are in the right ballpark. Hope that helps and I hope you can make it out.
