They're both classics, but Back to the Future wins by a hair. Both have incredibly funny and witty scripts. Solid FX work(the terror dogs notwithstanding). Villains we still love to hate like Walter Pecker("My name is Peck!") and Biff Tannen. And memorable tunes like "The Power of Love" and "Ghostbusters(Who Ya Gonna Call?)".

But BTTF has more heart. The character arc of George McFly is what elevates that movie above Ghostbusters. Plus as much as I enjoy Elmer Bernstein's score from Ghostbusters, Alan Silvestri's BTTF music is terrific.

I voted Ghostbusters, but maybe because I've seen BTTF so many times it's lost it's charm for me, whereas I've only recently rediscovered how hillarious Ghostbusters really was.

Ghostbusters. Come one, I love Fox and BTTF, but Ghostbusters is classic Bill Murray.

Harold Ramis is a genius. Look at some of his writing/directing credits:

    Animal House
    Meatballs
    Caddyshack
    Vacation
    Stripes
    Ghost Busters
    Back to School
    Groundhog Day

Some of the funniest movies of our time.

I agree with you and disagree with ima_drummer2k. I can't find Murray's swollen lip funny. Notice how most of those Ramis movies have Bill Murray in them... they're not high-grossing films.

I can't remember seeing Ghostbusters at all, but I know BTTF is damn funny. I know for a fact that Sigourney Weaver (was it her?) looked hot in one of them...

I love both, I have the DVDs yet still watch them on TV when they come on. I have to go with Ghostbusters though.

Gonna tell you a story about a little town I know
They had a real big problem with some big mean local ghost
Those spooks were making the whole city lose control
Well the mayor was frantic, the town was panicked
'Cause they had no sense of fear
'Cause they knew that they were missing those boys with a mission
So they called them up I cheer
They went boxing and trapping and shooting through the joint
Stepped right in and got down to the point
Those Ghostbusters came in cleanin' up the town
    Oh yeah

    ha!

slightly off topice since Animal House was not an '80s comedy.

imso, Animal House is hands down, easily, by far the funniest high school/college comedy of all time. Well, right there with School Daze. Gotta give Spike Lee his due. That was a groundbreaking college comedy. Comedy's are about delivery, not impressive story lines. Now, I wouldn't call it the greatest comedy...but, yeah, the hs/college genre. Better than Fasttimes, Ferris, America Pie, Old School (although I didn't see half of it because my rented dvd skipped at the tit scene...haha), and even Welcome to the Dollhouse. But then again, I might be forgetting some.

If you think Caddyshack is overrated, then you think Chevy Chase is, too. He's like Will Ferrell to me. I could just look at him and laugh.

Of course, Titan comedies of the '80s really needs to include Eddie Murphy. Possibly the best actor/comedian of that era...with Bill Murray....the others are more in the type-cast category, albeit arguably funnier on a pure funny scale.

    Paraphrased -

Doc: Marty!!! We have to go to the future!!! It's concerning you and Jennifer.

    Marty: What Doc?

Doc: Your daughter marries a black guy.

Marty: Umm...we don't see anything wrong with it.

Doc: I know. I was just saying. Me either.

Marty: Doc, we'd like to get out now.

i like chevy chase a lot. i think he's the funniest out of that whole group of midwest comedians from that era. I'm just not into those two movies, couldn't tell you why, its not even a style issue.

    not into will ferrell either.

I'm not going to vote because it's too hard! They're both about as perfect of a blockbuster movie as you can get. Not sure whey they can't make movies like these anymore.

Back to the Future gets the nod because the entire trilogy was awesome. Ghostbusters 2 was just OK.

As others have stated, Ghostbusters is the better movie, but BTTF is the better franchise.

Tough call, but Ghostbusters is one of the funniest movies ever made.

Now if you were comparing sequels...BTTF would win hands down

I picked GB because I remember it more than BFTF.

    Time to update my queue.
