I doubt it has to do with K afraid of people selling championship rings. More likely a matter of academic standards at the school: why set up a student to most likely fail at school and lose eligibility? If you have Jalen Rose talent, fine, you don't need a degree. But you also don't need Duke since there are plenty of schools out there who do recruit him. If you are not an elite talent, though, being put in a situation where it's all but certain that you won't get a degree or a pro ball future is not exactly ideal.

In any case, it seems Jalen still think its a social class thing: K selfishly don't want a needy former player lowering the value of his brand. If so, what does he think of guys who are complicit to K?

Of course it is. Maybe that's true or maybe he only took it back after being completely shredded for it, but that's really beside the point.

If he really didn't mean it and says how stupid and wrong he was for thinking that way, isn't he "b****-slapping" his own way of thinking as an eighteen year old?

I mean I completely understand why he would feel jealousy and feel resentment for successful black people if that was your reason for posting the link. I just personally think it would be more productive if someone would have told them they shouldn't think that way when they were young (i.e., "b****-slap" them).

Not surprised that you're in here defending Jalen's idiocy.

    Look...

1.) Jalen produced the documentary and deliberately put that in to make himself look more "street" than those uncle toms over at Duke.

2.) Jalen never backed down from the comments, which means he still thinks 18 year old Grant is an Uncle Tom.

3.) Jalen has the intelligence of a moon bat on meth to begin with, so he might as well be 18.

Seriously, how is this guy paid to talk basketball? He's a moron.

"Duke doesn't recruit players like me"

No **** Jalen... your GPA left a lot to be desired.

What he said was racially insensitive and he should be fired.

jalen mentioned it because he was talking about how he felt as a kid in a documentary about when he was a kid. the documentary isn't fab five "now

i don't know what that means, he didn't back down from himself? he was the only one talking

i'm glad he was honest about his 18 year old thoughts in the piece

I think he just wants Grant Hill to get with the program and get a divorce, have multiple kids with multiple mothers and then not give them every opportunity to succeed.... you know so he wont be an "Uncle Tom" but will be "Hood Tight" and respected for being uhhh ... a bad parent and dead beat dad??

Are you intentionally being dense? Ignore Jalen Rose for a second and look at the big picture. What about other kids who think this way who aren't lucky enough to shoot a basketball?

How ironic would it be??... years down the line, if Jalen has any sons involved in basketball, Duke will be recruiting them.

Given the situation in which each grew up, I can see why Jalen felt the way he felt back then and I can see why Grant responded the way he responded. I think Grant wrote that piece more so for his parents than anything else.

Grant Hill was the first "next Michael Jordan". Just look at his numbers before the ankle injury. Tmac went to Orlando to play second fiddle to Hill.

I get that he felt that way at 18, I get that. Guys like Hill grew up money and had more opportunities. Life sucks like that. I understand the prejudices young black athletes from poor areas faced during that time period (and still do).

Obviously an 18 year old Jalen Rose is going to look at a guy like Grant Hill and feel like that. But you look at Grant Hill, its just hard to see somebody knocking on him.

All I'm saying is that he could have done the right thing by making a point about his feelings at the time being misguided given how Grant Hill now has been such an example of perseverance and dedication. Hill has always been a community role model, etc. A guy who has had to go from superstar Hall-of-Fame bound player to overcoming numerous surgeries and reinventing himself as a role player in his old age who still goes out and gives 100% on the court.

That young black kids resenting successful and educated black kids is not productive. You seem to be arguing that jealousy has the opposite effect and leads to ambition. Unfortunately, I don't think the facts lend much support to that, but if that's the way you feel there's not really much point in us arguing about it.

I don't think black people from urban areas hate or dislike black people who are educated.
