I have to agree with this, someone else already mentioned it too but Duke's academic standards are VERY high and limits the areas where Coach K can recruit in. To be honest, not sure how anyone can complain about the job he has done putting together a POWER. The guy plays by harder rules, never is accused of cheating and is constantly in contention for a national championship...I mean who else can say they have 4 titles under their watch. I get what Jalen was saying but that was simply a high school kid being jealous and bitter about his situation. Saying that, I still think part of him thinks that way and won't back down because of it
wow, didn't see this thread, i can't believe people are ragging on rose about what he felt as a teenager. i honestly didn't think that comment would get this much attention
grant hill acts like he is surprised that he is being stereotyped. i'm sure him and his whole team were quite aware of what people were saying about them back in the day. i find this to be rather pretentious and unnecessary.
But did Rose really stop thinking that way? He talked as if he still has a problem with Duke's recruiting practice. Does he still have an issue with players who play for that team?
On 1st and 10 Jalen Rose said he had no problem with Duke recruiting those type of players because it avoids having a situation like what happened in Ohio St. with those players selling their merchandise.
He clarifies himself in the documentary and has since apologized to Grant Hill for the misunderstanding. The Uncle Tom comment was made in the context of him explaining how the Michigan guys saw Duke players at the time and that they used it as fuel when they played them. The comments were taken out of context.
This is how Grant should of ended it, "I am proud I never lost a game against the Fab Five and I get to smash on this anytime I want. What What!" <a href='http://www.askmen.com/women/galleries/singer/tamia/picture-3.html'><img src='http://images.askmen.com/galleries/singer/tamia/pictures/tamia-picture-3.jpg' width='' height='' border='0' alt='' /></a><p><a href='http://www.askmen.com/'> celebrity profile</a></p> <a href='http://www.askmen.com/women/galleries/singer/tamia/picture-2.html'><img src='http://images.askmen.com/galleries/singer/tamia/pictures/tamia-picture-2.jpg' width='' height='' border='0' alt='' /></a><p><a href='http://www.askmen.com/'> celebrity profile</a></p>
In my opinion, he doesn't have a problem with the players anymore, like he did when he was their age. imo, he retracted viewing the kids as selling out, Uncle Tom's.
I'm pretty sure the surprise was hearing Rose say it publicly in a documentary, while hardly taking the opportunity " to make it right". This goes deeper than Hill beefing with Rose. It's also about how young kids and players in those situations will perceive all of this.
Exactly! Which is why I thought the point would have been better made if the response avoided mentioning Rose at all, except maybe to broach the topic. Below is a recent Washington Post article that goes into more detail about the deeper issue. http://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/jalen-roses-comments-on-race-in-espn-documentary-are-misguided/2011/03/12/ABFHbLS_story.html
So it's only the word "Uncle Tom" you have a problem with. He wrong about using that word because he didn't understand what it really meant, admitted he was wrong, and apologized.
