I used to live accross the river from East St. Louis, and it's not as bad as most people make it out to be. Much of it is reputation, based on the infamous lawsuit in which the plantif was awarded city hall, 'cause the town was so broke. Now, there is this little town just a couple of miles northeast of East St. Louis, called Brooklyn, Il. In this 'town' of about 400 people, you'll get flaged down for some crack by the dealers about 5 times as you cross town, and there are more titty bars and *ahem* 'masage parlors' than there are houses, but it's not East St. Louis proper. There is actually quite a bit of new devlelopment in East St. Louis, heading south towards a town called Bellvillle. The other thing is really, East St. Louis is part of St. Loius. Imagine if you seperated all the good neighborhoods of Houston, put them on one side of a river, and put all the crap on the other side. Agrigated together, St. Louis and East St. Louis become 1 average city. It's just Illinois allows strip clubs, and the liquor laws are much more leinient. I believe that you still aren't allowed to buy any alcohol on Sundays in Mo? At least, that's what I remember...
I have lived in St. Louis for four years now after growing up in Houston. East St. Louis really isn't any worse then several other areas of St. Louis. It has just gotten all the publicity over the years, aka National Lampoon's Vacation. North St. Louis isn't the Garden of Eden and I believe it has more violent crime then the East Side. The actual city of St. Louis, separate from St. Louis County, is decaying rather rapidly. Except for a few historic neighorhoods, the place is really rundown do to a poor tax base. All the money is in the burbs of St. Louis County. You can now buy alcohol in MO on Sundays, but alcohol sales continue later in Illinois. I believe they quit selling at 4:00am.
Are you sure? For some reason I thought Savage Inequalities was comparing two Chicago area HS. I thought it was one in Wilmette (New Trier maybe?) and one in Cabrini. Of course, I haven't picked up that book in about 5-6 years, so I could very well be wrong. If I am, do you have any idea what book I'm talking about? And for the record, I can't figure out why everyone talks so much ish about Detroit. It is nowhere near as run-down as the Baltimore projects.
Has anyone been to East LA? I can tell you that THAT place is the ghettoest place Ive ever seen. More so than 3rd ward or 5th ward.
Otto Where is Brooklyn,IL ? I used to live in Collinsville, Il when I was attending SIU in Edwardsville and never heard of that town. I was approx 8 miles north of E St Louis. I was there from 85-87 and I remember Washington Park in E. St Louis as a bad palce to be
C'mon people!!! East St. Louis? Out of all the rappers I know of, NELLY HAS TO BE THE LEAST GHETTO OF THEM ALL!! Honestly though, E. L.A. and E. St. Louis are both very ghetto.
Here's a link to a description of the book: http://shop.barnesandnoble.com/book...=Rsearch.yahoo.com/bin/search&isbn=0060974990
Nelly actually originally lived in North St. Louis before moving to University City in St. Louis County.
when i put East L.A. as one of the poll choices, that's just cause i couldn't thing of another city...i never knew it was actually as bad as you guys are saying it is...my cousins, who live in st louis, are always joking about how it's ghetto and all, but no where close to the conditions in west Chicago...
Chester (Philly) is about at ghetto as it gets. All Of Pittsburgh is disgusting. Whoever put Baltimore on that list is crazy. Yeah it has its bad spots, but for the most part Baltimore is a great place. Not near as bad as several time murder capital of the world, and neighbor Washington D.C. El Paso/Juarez is one great big ghetto seperated by a border. From what alot of my friends say, Miami is pretty ghetto also.
here are some specific neighborhoods in New YOrk that you don't want to go to: Bedford/Stuyvesant- Brooklyn East New YOrk- Brooklyn. these two hoods are where most of the rappers out of Brooklyn hail from. Jay-Z, Biggie smalls, they come out of Bed/Stuy. the movie DO The RIght Thing (Spike Lee) is about Bed/Stuy. Hunts Point- Bronx Co-OP city(mentioned in this thread) is on a street called Gun HIll ROad, do the math! way way way uptown Harlem, like in the deep 140's - 160's, I would stay out of there too. like Rocket River said Define Ghetto
ohh, sorry, didnt realize this was a stupid thread I would like to retract my post and refer everyone reading this to a Naughty by nature song which speaks off all the nations ghettos, I belive it is called "craziest" if this is about street cred, or about hard times, than there are a thousand places in this country none of you computer using "sub-urban pimps" would dare go after dark. places everyone avoids unless you HAVE to be there I submit that the most ghetto street corner in the world is the one with kids bleeding on it right now, and that all of the bad areas in all of the bad cities are pretty much equal. equal right up untill someone gets shot. this kind of thing happens everywhere. hell it happens in Southampton NY near where I live and that is the heart of the Uber rich Hamptons. yes lots of kids sell crack, and lots of them are poor, and lots of them die, and that ,little place where all this happens is Ghetto. If you really want to learn about ghettos, go check out latin america. check out the bad areas in Kingston Jamaica, or in Sao Paulo, or in Buenos Aires and Mexico City. if you wanna know where the "coolest" ghetto styles are from, well that would be the garment district in NY. however MTV seems to have a hell of a lot to do with that too ok, Im done PEACE edit: AF110TH is correct. there are quite a few places in NY that would be un-fun to visit. I could name a few more up in the Bronx, not to mention Jersey as well as other burbs. But like he and others have asked. What definition of Ghetto do you mean?
A quick perusal of mapquest reveals that it is between your Washington park and what has to be the most gheto bridge in all of america, the McKinley Bridge. I swear the first time I drove that thing I thought I was flashing back to Snake Pliskin busting out of NYC with the Prez. I keep waiting for the landmines to go off. As far as North St.Louis, I real briefly worked for this company that sold lots of nice wine but also had some slummy gheto liquor stores. For a while, I was assigned to one of the slum stores, at the intersection of Natural Bridge and Kingshighway. The place came with bulletproof glass windows, and as manager, part of my duty was unloading the shotgun and .38 every night. We had this big 300lb security guard I called 'Red Dog' 'cause he looked like the dog on the beer bottle. One time, someone robbed someone in the parkinglot and he got to fire his big @ss .44 dirty harry gun at the guy as he ran away. I've never seen anyone so happy. We also had our resident winos, who we all knew by name. My favorite was this guy named 'smoke stack', who'se beverage of choice was 'Country Club Vodka'. To give you an idea how gheto this place was, they bought a big closeout sale of 'Coca-moca' flavored MD 20/20. You could tell when the end of the month was, 'cause these people would be down to pocket change and they'd realize that the only thing they could afford was a 750ml of chocolate/coffee flavored wine. That's a pretty sad look. Also, they'd cash welfare and disability checks. I can't tell you how many fifths of $50 Courvosier got sold to people cashing welfare checks... sad.
