I heard Covington was anything from 6'6" to 6'9".. How tall is he actually?

Typically you can add about an inch to an inch an a half with socks and shoes, which would put Covington around 6' 7.5".

Either way, Covington measured out longer (wingspan) than Paul Millsap, Blake Griffin, Carl Landry, Chuck Hayes, Thad Young, Faried, Pattrick Patterson, etc...
Patterson's has an inch on him in standing reach. Faried two. Those are guys all measured out equal or worse.

So, again, if Covington proves to be a player, he won't be unable to effectively play PF because of his height or length, but rather his weight/strength, as he weighed in at a mere 210 lbs at the combine which is 10 lbs lighter than what Parsons (similar size) weighed in when he came out.

He will get playing time at SF he plays great Defense, 3 point shot is money, and crashes the boards, he does everything well and coaches are impressed as they should be. We can’t run an older Garcia into the ground 82 games it won’t work if we need him to produce like last year in the playoffs. Garcia was great during the playoffs partly because he had fresher legs than most of the players due to the lack of playing time he got during the regular season. I watched him a few weeks ago on NBAtv playing with Dominican Republic dude got hurt 2 minutes into the first quarter and had to sit rest of the game and next one. He pulled a hamstring or groin and he was just running up the court no contact with any players at on the injury.

i think he's doomed now that CXbby started a thread entitled, "Getting to know Robert Covington - Your Future Starting PF". Eerily reminiscent of the Marcus Morris thread. ;)

He looks to have good overall game. Here are some of his highlights from this year's Summer League.

His stroke is sweet but strength wise he's going to get punished! I mean in that highlight video, he looks like a sg in terms of girth.

He is closer to 6'7" in shoes and with his body does not belong at the pf spot unless he is replacing Carlos Delfino. Bad option. He himself said he is a SF and only played pf because that is what his college coach requested. He is a physical athlete but do not confuse him with Barkley. In a reall NBA world he should never play pf.

I look for him to back up Parsons. Parsons supposedly bulked up this off season which makes him the much better option at PF when we play small ball. Which means Covington may have chance to get some minutes at the 3 spot. But he will be competing against Caspi, and Garcia.

The reality is he is one of the guys you have to consider making the squad. Think about it. Lock to make the team...

    1. Howard
    2. Harden
    3. Parsons
    4. Lin
    5. Beverly
    6. Dmo
    7. TJones
    8. Asik
    9. Camby
    10. Canaan

That lives 5 spots of those 4 are most likely to make the squad...

    11. Brooks
    12. Garcia
    13. Breuer
    14. Casspi

    ANd the remaining...

    Williams
    Young
    Henriquez
    Greg Smith
    Covington

...vying for one roster spot. In my mind Williams Young and Henriquez or toast which leaves Smith and Covington vying for that last roster spot. So do you trade Smith consider he is really a bad choice at pf and with Asik and Camby we don't need him to backup center. That's my choice but Morey my see him as an asset and trade chip later although sitting on the pine will only devalue him. The other option is eating salary and dumping Casspi.

In the end I believe Covington will make the Roster but I would be surbrised see him and Canaan anywhere but the the Dleague for the start of the season. And as for PF forget it. With Dmo and Tjones already vying for minutes and McHale wanting to get minutes for Asik or Howard there and considering Parsons has bulked and would be a much better option with more size to play PF forget 6'6.25" Covington playing PF.

DD only said he will take a look, he hasn't offered any opinions one way of another on Covington. His only stances I know of is he is a fan of Dmo, and a non-believer in Jones. Meanwhile, postbadlee has long been driving the Terrence "Lesser Dwight" bandwagon, and a detractor of Donatas. This jinx/counter-jinx phenomena between the board's two biggest anti-prophets is what makes my stance on Dmo/Jones simple: they are both doomed.

Naturally, Covington will be left as the only man standing.

You dare go against the Coach???;)
Seriously, i just don't see Covington playing much at the four. I can see him making somewhat of a Parsons type of jump at the three. We have too many fours as it is.
Also, when all is said and done, Jones will stand at the top of the PF chain.

Like i mentioned earlier, Smith will probably get the nod at the beginning, but Jones will work himself in not long after that.

Greg Smith is nothing more than an undersized center and on this roster he's a 3rd or 4th string option at best. He's a good bet to be traded or cut before the season.

Good post. I think we see eye to eye on most of this.

I think Garcia and Brewer are in because if you look in your locks list they are the only backups for Harden. Also, you and I agree on the 3 point guards you have in your lock list which IMO means that Brooks is likely out. I don't think we carry 4 PG on our roster and as much as I like Brooks he doesn't have much upside or trade value which is what our last few roster spots are for.

All that said I see Covington and Greg Smith on the final roster if there are no trades. I think we go three deep at every spot.

    Lin, Beverly, Canaan
    Harden, Brewer, Garcia
    Parsons, Caspi, Covington
    TJones, DMo, Greg Smith
    Howard, Asik, Camby

I really hate to see Williams not make it, if he does make it Covington or Caspi are out.

On the opening press conference for Media Day w/McHale and Morey, McHale mentioned Covington's name as being a potential weapon (or something like that).
Found it interesting that he didn't mention too many names in particular, but he did bring up Covington. Likely wouldn't have mentioned him if he didnt' think he would make the roster.

McHale mentioned him along with Casspi as options for going small, to make up for the Delfino's minutes last year. Funny thing about people in this thread saying Covington can't play PF because he is too small: Delfino was our best PF last year.

I did like hearing Dwight say nice things about Terrence Jones, I would love to be wrong about him. If he can step up then maybe we won't need to resort to starting an undrafted rookie.
