Fair enough. Then again, boxers and BTs are related to pit bulls too through common ancestry I applaud you for getting a rescue dog and saving a life rather than encouraging people to pup more pups on this earth. The vast majority of breeders are crooks at worst and ignorant at best.
Yeah, boxers are a part of the bully breeds along with pit bulls. I think we will just end up getting another boxer...hopefully on the smaller side. I am not going to lie...we got Bo from a breeder but that was because I was not aware of how serious the overpopulation was. I wouldn't change anything because I love Bo dearly so the next dog will come from a rescue group. If you have time, check out The Forgotten Dogs of Fifth Ward Project on FB...pretty much guarantee that you won't leave the page without tears in your eyes.
Those were definitely whippets in commodore's gif above. Since I own a whippet and previously owned a boxer, I think I can say they wouldn't be suited to one another. Whippets are awesome but would not understand the boxer energy.
I've always viewed boxers as calm. But, actually, most of my experience is from my boxer mix (RIP Mollie) and another gf's whippet/pit mix. They were about as calm as you can get. I suppose some pure boxer breeds are calmer than the others. What is the shorter, stout boxer breed?
Maybe your boxer mix was calm and plus if it was a female. Female boxers are more calm than male boxers. There are two different types of boxer breeds - American boxer and German boxer. The German one is larger. I've seen some of German boxers at the dog park. Pretty big!
This is what the mother of my boxer mix looked like. American White Boxer, I think. She was shorter and stouter than this. So, mine was mostly white with two adorable brown spots -- one over an eye, and a larger on her lower back. She was taller than her mother, and had a more common American Boxer shape to her...just a slightly different looking face than a pure breed.
I rarely visit my own FB page anymore because I follow some rescue groups and some "death row dogs" type of groups. Every time I visit my own page two things happen: I donate money I am further disgusted by the human race
All dogs are if they're bored, but yeah, JRs are diggers. Otto (JR) will start a hole and Conan (Mastiff) will widen it to a point where Otto can escape. Then Conan sits at the back door telling on Otto for getting out.
heypartner, bet Mollie was adorable! Dave_78, ugh, that's why I don't follow a lot of rescue groups for the exact reasons you posted. I follow several mainly the boxer ones and that is it. I can't stand seeing pics of neglected animals. Freaking breaks my heart. Xerobull, lol. Bo used to dig when he was extremely bored but luckily he doesn't do it anymore.
Update! We are fostering a male puppy estimated to be 8-9 months old for a week. We got him Friday night. So far, he is a good puppy but needs to work on his housebreaking (only the peeing part) and a couple of issues. Bo is having a hard time with Eli around. I feel so bad for Bo. I think he's upset because another dog is taking up his space. Eli doesn't play with Bo or give him any attention. Bo constantly wants to play with Eli who just ignores him or snap at him. It has been a few days and I think things are a little bit better. They are co-existing. Eli is still a puppy that needs a puppy obedience class. However, he knows the sit command and is calm when getting his food. He has become very attached to me. Following me everywhere and laying down when I'm cooking or doing my makeup. Bo, on the other hand, follows Eli around and just stares at him or keep his distance. Eli is going to get neutered on Friday and will be kept for 2 weeks with the lady who dropped him off but after that, he needs a long term foster until he's adopted. I don't think we will keep him if both dogs do not become buddies. I don't want Bo to be constantly stressed out when Eli is around. I feel really guilty because Eli is such a sweet puppy who wants some loving and in heaven with the toys but have to think of Bo first. Eli might be better off with a low energy dog or as lone dog. He seems to be independent...doing things on his own. Bo wants a buddy. Eli was being fostered at another place (her partners run a boarding place out of their house) for a month and they had too many dogs so he was crated the most of times last week or two. I'm not sure what happened but the lady said that they were going to send him to the shelter where she works at for time being and she didn't want that. He would have had a high chance of being EU'd. Still considering about fostering him after his 2 weeks is up if she can't find someone else to foster. There was interest in fostering him other than me, though so hopefully things will work out. The lady can't foster him after 2 weeks. Still have until Thursday to see how it works out. Here's a pic. I'm not sure what breeds he has...I think he may have some boxer in him due to his white paws and markings on the chest. They say he has American Bulldog in him but his chest isn't so broad.
Congrats on fostering a dog! Hopefully Bo and Eli will get used to each other and become the buddies you're hoping for. There's so many dogs that need help and I only wish I had the space for a 3rd dog. Good luck with Eli and Bo!
Great thing of you to do. I hope Bo and Eli get along well. I think finding the right energy dogs will help. Bo might need a dog with a little higher energy. I had originally taken a low energy dog from the shelter. She has great energy for playing. Then we adopted a high energy dog. I thought they would balance each other out. My first dog was kind of how you were describing Bo, except not trying to play with the new dog, because the new dog was misbehaving a lot at first and dried dominance humping my dog a lot. It took a while to train the new dog. And almost a year before they were really bonded. Now their energy isn't the same level, and they only occasionally do play together, but they are very close now. They will sometimes decided to sleep in the same dog bed, or lay on each other. At the dog park, they both will take up for each other if another dog is playing too roughly. I hope all goes well for you, the foster dog, and Bo. If another dog works better for Bo, then best of luck finding it.
Eli's eyes and snout remind me of a pit bull, so I'd bet that is in the mix. In my experience, pits can be great with humans (horrible stories not withstanding) but tend to not love other dogs so much. So if I'm right on both those points, Eli would probably never love being around Bo.
I absolutely adore Eli. He is sooo sweet. Just not sure why he's not giving Bo attention. He's totally fine being on his own with toys or being with me. He doesn't seem to care too much for my hubby. B-Bob, we were thinking that he had some pit bull in him because of his eyes. They are very almond shaped. And he's calm. It's probably the best if we get a dog that will love being around Bo. Hubby already decided that Eli isn't for Bo. Wish we could keep him. We still have a few days until Thursday. No matter what happens, I will help with finding him a home. He listens to me which is a shocker! Bo was a bad puppy and very dominant dog. It took like a year for him to finally listen to me.
