Anybody with a right mind would not mess with the Russians period.

You just don't start a war with another superpower with nukes, nobody is that dumb.

    Not yet, anyway.

Besides, if the USA goes into Georgia, it will be somewhat like the Cuban Missile Crisis (not exactly alot). I don't think you would see Russia setting up shop in Mexico or Cuba, nowadays.

But when country start approach another super power like that, only matter of time, before the big fireworks go off.

Especially since the blame of who started the conflict is unclear. From what I have read the Georgians are burning people's homes. I really hope the US show some restraint and not get involved with this.

If the Georgians are indeed responsible for civilian atrocities in a bid to make a land grab, then that is no country I can support. Obviously, our country has a responsibility in all this...with us giving them arms and trainers. We were training them for this? Somebody on our side knew something IMO. Whether Bush knew this was going down, I dunno but fingers are pointing. I don't like any of this. The Cold War never really ended. It may have hibernated a few years but here we are trying to get a foothold in a country on Russia's backdoor. Spreading Democracy isn't all it's cracked up to be if a country conducts itself like this under our guidance. I wouldn't believe in sacrificing a single US soldier or civilian over this...if Georgia really started this by killing civilians. Facts seem hard to come by, however. All these people dying...and for what?

its been done before, and can be done again. Putin is counting on the west not having the will to stand up for Georgia. If they dont, Ukraine is next. Georgia was provoked into attacking Ossetia.

Attempting to put speed bumps to stop Russia from expanding back to their Coldwar status as a bonafide superpower.

Its clear to me that (right or wrong) the US is attempting to strengthen countries that boarder Russia in order to contain its powers.

Why else would you station 1000 "advisers" in Georgia and provide them with military equipment? Not to mention whoever controls Georgia will be controlling the main proposed pipeline in and out of Russia.

This conflict was going to happen sooner or later, unlucky for the US, Georgia's r****ded government gave the Russians a reason to overrun Georgia while the US still has most of its resources tied up else where.

no man. there is a HUGE difference in home turf especially if it's land locked. you gotta be as dumb as Nazi Germany if you try to mess with the Russians.

Ridiculous. You think if we weren't in Iraq we'd start World War 3 over Georgia? And on top of thinking that, you think it would be a BETTER situation?

counting on? no, they are basically taunting the west. it's their turf. you don't go to another man's yard and flex your muscle. i understand that Georgians want to be closer to the west, but unlucky for them, they are right next to Russia and locked inland.

and where is your proof that Georgia was provoked? i don't think the Russians were shelling into Georgia. even though that area was historically part of Georgia, but you gotta know your stuff before you make your bold move. the stronger one makes the rule.

Wow! Basso as a true neo-con wants another war.

Shows the absolute Strangelovian nuttiness of the neo-cons. They are dangerous.

I know it is a tough choice for you. What do you want first? War with Iran or another full blown Cold War with major conventional battles with Russia thousands of miles away next to their borders.

the war has been on by proxy for days. Russian supplied ossetians needled the Georgia with sporadic gunfire, hoping they'd be stupid enough to make a move.

I know its Russia's backyard, but the magnitude of bullying in the last few months makes me want to gag. Europe better grow a spine otherwise this is going to escalate into another world war. Either that or cold war gains go up in smoke.

Nobody wants a war with Russia but the problem here is that the Russians have historically shown that the only thing they understand is force. If you let them run through Georgia, you can bet someone else will be next. We can't be appeasers. If we let Russia start this crap then that's a green light for China to take Taiwan.

Not that I'm interested in another war, but there are different types of wars than what we have in Iraq. Fighting off the Russians would be the type of modern conventional war that the US military has been readying for since Reagan. We would wipe the floor with the Russians in a conventional war, question is do they reach for nukes as we're kicking their asses back into Russia.

The neo-cons and the military industrial complex never wanted the Cold War to end. The "peace dividend" was a very negative thing for them and they were afraid it would be spent on social services such as medicare etc.

This return of the Cold War has been predicted for years with the needless humiliation of Russia after the fall of the Soviet Union.

The US made the stupid mistake of encouraging extreme free market capitalism on the destroyed Russian economy, leading to massive poverty and the rise of a few wealthy oligarchs.

Russia did not have a damn thing to sell on the international market except for oil, which was at a low price.

The Russians decided that if this wide spread poverty and extraordinary inequality was democracy, screw it and elected Putin. Bush is the perfect cover for Putin as he is so widely hated around the world with his war in Iraq.

    Honest question:

If you are the military industrial complex, and you are viewing the date of November 4 fast approaching... you must have a preference, no? You want the Hawk candidate to win, the one who is promising more wars and has a history of supporting armed conflict.

What could you lobby for and attempt to germinate that would help the more war-friendly candidate have a better chance? How about re-igniting the cold war? How about you find a way to get a few key government allies to push the administration toward a bullish "you go girl" messaging policy to Georgia?
