I think you want to clarify some timelines cuz right now this looks like the sequel to Grapes of Wrath.

 

Born near Berlin, parents moved to a small city (Hermsdorf) in the middle of Germany when I was 6. Living there for 15 years now, but plan on moving to some bigger city after University.

A lot like Houston except substitute desert for swamp.

 

rocketsjudoka pretty much hit the nail on the head. North Las Vegas is a crime-ridden area. The newer parts of Henderson (south-side of the Vegas Valley) and Summerlin (west-side of the Vegas Valley) are just like the outskirts of Houston suburbia.

Overall, the geography and "feel" of the city aren't much different than what I've experienced while visiting Los Angeles. And as with any large population center, there are good parts and bad. Also...the people here are complete dicks. I miss friendly personalities that the South has to offer. Everyone here is pretty much from somewhere else and a decent portion of the population is job-related transients...so I think there's a lack of interest in making the community as nice/friendly/good as you can.

That being said...my wife and I have been discussing leaving here. Eyeballing Oregon or Washington and a little bit Hawaii. Want to see more green.
