Houston was dropped off by the beach -> it's called LA. : ) You're right that there is a great selection of international cuisines in Houston though. Some good Indian and Chinese spots. The nightlife does seem rather disjointed. There's so real central strip of bars, for instance. Instead like in midtown, you have bars located in strange street corners or in strip mall shopping centers.
one HUGE difference.... the people. LA people suck royal balls. the nightlife is solid, but damn it would be so much nicer if there was any decent amount of public transportation.... there are some pretty cool places, though. midtown and the village work because you can walk to multiple spots (for the most part), but there's no centralized "party area" like downtown austin.
I don't think I've ever understood pride of a PLACE, but that's why I hate Houston bashing. It's always somebody from a similar big city that's way too proud of their own surroundings that they don't see how a lot of the negative aspects are in their own cities. It's a place to live, who cares what else is or isn't here. Jerks.
I don't know whats worse, ignorance of people writing about towns they know nothing of, or the ignorance of people who never left the state of texas who think houston is the best city in the world. LOL Both suck.
You must be one of the people I was talking. Ignorant MF-ers!! Can't take what you dish out??? Overgeneralizing and stereotyping other cities is the same exact thing many of you are doing and have a problem with.
Never driven East on I-10 very far have you? It ends in Jacksonville, FL... not "South Fl" (which is mostly horrible outside of ORL's theme parks, and MIA's SoBe area). Athens GA nor Savannah nor even Atlanta are on I-10 -those are off I-20 (as is Dallas). Coincidentally, I-20 (and I-30 just outside of Ft. Worth to I-20) joins together with I-10 heading West from Dallas at about the Weatherford area. Anyway... ATL? It seemed kinda like Houston, only not as flat... or pre-planned. You got the Atlantic part correct though. As someone that has driven from L.A., CA to JAX, FL... I can tell you that Houston is #2, maybe, to only L.A., some would say PHX is a 1a... but Houston is in the top 3 if not 1 for traffic management of the cities along I-10. Pensacola is probably the prettiest area on I-10 (at least the 110 down to US 98 and the beaches) with JAX for sunrise and LA for sunset being close seconds. Houston's freeway planning in the '50s is it's most redeeming virtue if you've ever had to drive in any other major cities in the US. The tourists that complain about Houston traffic, or the locals for that matter, need to realize that Houston's layout is really well done. Real loops, real N, S, E, W running freeways... freeways "named" after actual directions instead of local historical figures... Really easy after a brief introduction to the layout. Dallas on the other hand? San Antonio?? LA? But, I guess I can see that if you fly for business, and (when in your local city) only drive the same routes everyday, I guess I could see why (as mentioned earlier in the thread) the airport and Greenspoint area could be frustrating. Hard to get around that area... and kind of run down compared to the '80's hay day... And the Hobby area is kind of bleh as well... I agree. But Greater Houston, by it's sheer square mileage magnitude, has soooo much more going on at any given time of the year than many of these other cities mentioned. Only SoCal could offer as much, or maybe more with Mountain areas, than greater H-Town IMO. But which do you prefer? A hurricane you can forecast and escape, or an unannounced earthquake that splits the fault-line and drops your city into the Pacific? Advantage Houston.
Weather forecast for Saturday April 5 Manhattan, New York...home of Gawker.com High 54 Low 42 chance of rain 80% (Personally, I'd rather live in Manhattan, Kansas) Houston, Texas High 77 Low 53 Sunny and nice . chance of rain 10% I think after the kids finish their baseball games, we'll go for a nice swim in the pool.
Houston kind of grows on on you. I loved the low cost of living, mixed ethnicity and food. You even get a perverse high driving 40 miles to work on 59 everyday. Still, I wouldnt count houston as a must-see city. The strip-malls in particular ...ugh. Not that it matters tho...I'd rather live in houston than any city in the northeast.
The more people write baloney like this, the more Houston grows. Of course they have nothing to do with each other, but I always get a laugh from the Houston haters. Especially the ones that live here. Houston has faults like EVERY city in the U.S. .Ours don't make us any less than any other city. I could list the number of things wrong or lacking in other cities I've visited or lived in. But why? Love your city Houstonians and it will love you back. Well, maybe not all the time. And don't ever forget, you live in a GREAT city, your city
