Neither will or should be back any time soon. Fox is different in that he has a surgically correctable condition. Sure, he has to make life-style modifications after, but repeated future "stress" won't exacerbate what he's having done. Kubiak's condition is entirely about lifestyle changes. There are no surgeries to correct things. Hell, they don't even have a for-sure diagnosis, just that this is what he "likely" had, and he's obviously at risk for things happening again (and possibly worse). As I mentioned before, being an NFL head coach is one of the worst jobs (stress-wise) in all of sports. Maybe if a bunch of coaches start coming down with more fatigue/stress related issues, they'll start instituting duty hour restrictions league-wide... but till then, they'll be at risk. They sleep in their offices, most of them eat unhealthy throughout the season, they're constantly facing media pressure/scrutiny over either minuscule (or major) issues... regardless of whether or not the team is good. Andy Reid is a walking heart-attack waiting to happen... needs to go on the Rex Ryan diet. Interesting to hear Jimmy Johnson state that going to Miami for a second HC job was one of the worst decisions of his life, both personal and health-wise. Its also why I don't ever see Cowher or Gruden get serious about a new gig, unless some team makes them a boat-load offer that they can't refuse (and even then, I don't expect them to give their full devotion to the job as they did before).
Excellent point. If Kubiak is indeed a high risk for strokes, he really has no choice but to find a less stressful career. Plus, no owner will hire him to be head coach out of fear that he'd collapse in the middle of the season, or collapse in the middle of another game, or die in the middle of a game. No, no owner wants that chaos. The only way Kubiak's career is saved (not here, he's finished here) is if his condition can be surgically corrected or successfully treated with meds. Even then, because of his mediocre overall record as a head coach, I don't think he'll ever be a candidate to head coach again, maybe he can be an offensive coordinator, but that would be his ceiling.
This. Being a really good QB coach and good offensive mind in general wouldn't be the worst thing for him in the world. He's already set for life money-wise, time to enjoy it a little more. Life is too short as is.
What a baffling season… We have two more wins that the Jags, Schaub is on the bench, Kubiak’s in the hospital and Case freaking Keenum is our starting QB. I mean… just bizarre.
While stress at any job can take a toll on the body, the reason for his TIA wasnt secondary to stress..but rather some other underlying medical cause: such as carotid artery narrowing, atrial fibrillation, etc... The main risk factors for TIA and strokes are just hypertension, age, smoking, high cholesterol, diabetes...
Certainly the most bizarre in this franchise's history... keep forgetting that this team hasn't been around that long. At least all those people claiming that they'd "never get into the Texans like they used to get into the Oilers" (after year 4-5 of their inception) no longer come up here... which I always thought was a flawed statement as it would be impossible to get into any team that doesn't have any sort of longevity or success. Longevity will eventually lead to fans experiencing bizarre moments/seasons such as these... and success brings out the fair-weather maniacs that escalate the fandom to a new level.
Kubiak can return to his job whenever, but he would be closely monitored...he is gonna be on some kinda blood thinner, but there is no reason to doubt that he can not handle the pressures of his job. According to the medical staff, they may just let him skip out on the Arizona game, completely relax, and get ready for a 3 week home schedule right after that. This would drastically limit his travel and allow him to spend more time here at home.
Htn and cholesterol can directly be attributed to lifestyle issues. Kubiak seems like he's one of the more fit/healthy head coaches out there... but the stress of being a head coach is definitely real, and is definitely not "good" for the body. It doesn't matter how he got it... he had one... and reducing stress goes along with preventing future occurrences.
Kubes needs to look at Rudy T. as an example. Kubes should become a consultant or a scout, it's not worth it.
My cousin died at the age of 21 bc she had something like this happen while she was sleeping. It doesnt matter what you eat, how you exercise, etc...some things in life just happen, just like when a 5 year old is diagnosed with cancer. It's life.
My dad had a TIA when I was in high school, so I know a bit about this. Kubiak should not return to coaching any time soon. To do so could put his life at risk. His body gave him a great big warning sign. He needs to heed it, or the consequences could be disastrous.
Let me get this straight, he cares so much and works so hard that he drives his health into the toilet and is still only an average HC?
I'm convinced he can take the Texans to the Super Bowl. Looks like he overworked himself out of the job though.
I don't think anyone should question his work ethic and desire to win. That's what we're talking about here. The only thing you can question is his decision-making and maybe his philosophy. I think Gary will go on to become a very successful OC (or maybe some kind of senior offensive consultant first) once he's done here, which I believe will be after this year or next. And I can only imagine what a huge lift off of his shoulders that would be.
If the Texans lose to the Jags, at home, I think you could make an argument that it's the lowest point the franchise has ever been.
Do you think the worst HC in the NFL, NBA, NHL, etc... gives any less effort? Just because you work your ass off at something, doesnt mean you're going to be amazing at it.
