Two completely different type of players. One is a blue collar role player and the other is a tertiary scoring option
Chandler Parsons was someone who could create for himself or others off the pick and roll. He also couldn't really shoot that well, and was possibly too turnover prone to be viable with what he could create. Very solid defender his rookie year who regressed badly every following year. Turnovers and no defence saw him unwanted - no place in the league (also injuries) Garrison Mathews can shoot, is streaky, but once he starts hitting can go right off. Not a big threat off the dribble - needs to focus on catch and shoot and hustle to stay in the league In short, completely different playstyles
Parsons defense was overrated. So was his 3ball. And his ball handling. Parsons was just overrated. Period.
His best years were in houston. They way Chandler parlayed his Houston success into so many max contracts is the thing of legends.
I was doing a sort of cross-country NBA tour in '08 and nudged my way into a Bobcats season ticket holder's meeting Q&A session just in time to see one fan stand up to ask the GM a question about Matt Carroll: "Why do we have to have him on the team if we already have the other one?" Everyone busted out laughing–even the Bobcats staff–understanding that he was referring to Adam Morrison. Well, the guy asking the question wasn't laughing; he was legitimately confused as to why they had decided to double the required roster quota of no-talent white wings for no good reason.
He was really good and could have been worthy of that near max contract if he his body didn't break down from banging all the hot chicks.
Mathews is a perfect 3&D player when his shot is falling. If he can start going to the cup and creating for others he would become a star.
CP - Super tall skinny pretty boy with silky jumper & athletic game and questionable D. GM - Average, athleticism & looks, with super high motor, hustle D, and crazy 3 point making ala Gerald Green Seems like the only things they have in common is they both hits treys, are white, and wore the number 25.
haven’t read OP yet, but I bet the inspiration was them both being white role players Chandler Parsons had way more skill and potential than Gary Matthews…
There's almost no need for that. He just needs to be better at D and consistent in his shooting. I'd like him to be a Bowen type of guy.
That might be all he ever becomes already at age 25 which would be fine. If he could just add a pump and dribble/kick type game to his arsenal it would open things up for everyone. Come playoff time (cue "Playoffs?" memes) it may be easy to neutralize him especially in those games where his defense lacks.
don’t feel bad OP, in reality nearly all white dudes from the states have a similar game. Except of course Chase Budinger who was actually half black from the waist down
I don't think taking charges makes him a 3&D player. He gives good effort but I don't think he makes above average reads and rotations. Dude can get his shot up like no-one else on the roster though.
