That's an ambiguous question. You can't just draw a line in the book and say 'this season does not go past here'. This season takes stuff from books 3, 4, 5, probably even book 2.
Somewhere between 1/2 and 2/3 really. This is based on knowing what the climax of the season will be and where it appears in the book. As far as I know, the plan was simply to do book 3 up to a certain point. Book readers will know what it is. If they start incorporating elements from other books into this season, I'll bring it up in the thread. I don't think that's going to be the case though. You get into a situation with books 4 and 5 where parts of each run parallel to each other time wise. But we're still in a spot where the book is pretty chronological. To start using plot points from other books at this point would be changing the chronology which as far as I can recall, the producers have pretty much adhered to except for a few minor points in an effort to streamline the story (Robb was at Riverrun long before he was shown arriving this season). Keep in mind that these books are 1,000-1,200 pages long each. One book in this series is longer than the 3 Lord of the Rings books put together. So there's a lot of material to work with and it's been a challenge to try to cram everything into 10 episodes. They've had to condense and consolidate a lot of stuff. This season though, they're dealing with less material so maybe they're able to go in depth a bit more with some things.
there have been elements of different books so far in the previous seasons, a couple things that stick out in my mind is the story of tyrion talking about him being in charge of the plumbing in lannisport, he didnt tell that story until after clash of kings, when tywin told arya about milord and my lord, that happened way later in the story with completely different characters
Some of these posts are really lame. Varys, uninteresting? I thought his scenes last night were excellent. Dany, uninteresting? I would have agreed with this at the beginning of season 2 when she's just wandering around ("I sure am hungry, I sure am thirsty"). But not now. "How silly will she look riding a dragon"? If HBO puts some budget into it, it'll look sweeeeeeeeeeeeet. I'm assuming she gets to do so one day. The part about Craster was semi-dull in earlier episodes, mainly because it was setup, but nice payoff. And I disagree with the poster who didn't find it believable. Driven to dire straits----hunger, humiliation----last night's scene was very possible. Can't wait for next week's Hound-Dondarrion bit. Question: Spoiler On the intro, it looks like only two cities on Slaver's Bay. Anyone wondering if they're gonna skip one of the slaver cities? I hope not, but....budget, budget, budget.
It's odd. The rest of the map on the intro look fairly proportional and lines up with the book. But they make either Slaver's Bay look small, or make Astapor look huge. The size they show Slaver's bay, Astapor should be much smaller, and certainly not taking up an entire peninsula. But I see what you're saying. Spoiler You can see Astapor and another city where Yunkai would be. Where Mereen should be, there's nothing. It's possible that they're going up to Yunkai this season, saving Mereen for the next, and thus not feeling the need to include it in the map.
Yeah, I was wondering this, too. So I found this, and looks like Yunkai stays in the story: http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/03/29/your-game-of-thrones-questions-answered/ Q. You have had great success finding real-world locations that evoke the grandeur of the source material — the view out of that armorer’s window towards the end of “The North Remembers” is a great example. Did any of the new fictional settings for the third season present difficulties in finding a suitable location in which to shoot? Are there any settings for upcoming seasons that you are worried or excited about? — Tumnas, Narnia A. As far as third season locations, I’d say the cities of Slaver’s Bay presented the greatest challenge. We weren’t entirely satisfied with Qarth in season two, and given that this season is Dany’s most dramatic to date, we wanted to make sure the locations lived up to the grandeur of the storyline. Essaouira, a fortified city on the Moroccan coast, doubled for Astapor. Ait Benhaddou (another fortified Moroccan city, this one on the edge of the Sahara) doubled for Yunkai.
Regarding the cities of Slaver's Bay. Spoiler IMO, if they were to omit one of the 3 cities, it would be Yunkai. They could have conceivably consolidated Yunkai and Astapor for story purposes (might already have to some degree). I don't think you could do that with Mereen and Yunkai, and if they were to consolidate those two, they'd probably still call it Mereen. So if they are using Yunkai, I have to believe Mereen will be in there too. It's too important not to be.
Why? It was in the episode that aired last night. That makes it fair game. It's only a spoiler if it hasn't aired yet.
I would tend to think the same way, but there are people that haven't seen it. From the past it was clear that the policy was that you still had to spoiler that stuff.
