You saw the way Tyrion reacted when he saw it and it wasnt his first time. These people are seeing what they considered a myth or legend fly over their heads while they are attacking its "mother". Some ran away, some froze in panic. Both are valid actions. The first person that took any advanced on Danny was bitten in half and thrown into a crowd of its peers. How many others would attempt to attack her with the dragon so close?
I think there was pretty much a hidden understanding that Davos knew what was coming and Stannis knew he wouldn't be cool with it, so in essence, Stannis was basically sending him to the Wall to spare him.
I figured the same, I dont expect him to return to them unless hes just passing on the "doesnt matter what we are doing here, white walkers are right behind us" message.
Ya, it obviously meant for shock value. It is one of the few decisions of the show writers that I have qualms with.
From something I was reading earlier, apparently this whole story line with a King being forced to sacrifice his daughter to ensure a crucial victory is lifted straight from Greek Mythology in which Agamemnon displeased a Greek goddess and was forced to sacrifice his daughter to appease the goddess before setting sail to start the Trojan War. Interestingly enough, there are some accounts of the story which say Agememnon did sacrifice his daughter, while in others he sacrificed an animal instead. Which animal? You guessed it. A Deer (Which makes the gift Davos gave Shireen interesting). Whats even funnier was I watching the movie Troy last night on BBC before GoT started.
Yeah, it was weak writing. It would be one thing if they had been building up despair for Stannis all season long and he had become desperate or highly fanatical, but they hadn't done that. Just two episodes ago he threw Mel out of his tent for even suggesting the idea.
I am GUESSING that Arya will be Trent's NEXT Young girl so she can take him out . . . . Spoiler How very . . . Kill Bill Rocket River
I was waiting on Tyrion [I wonder how many kids will have that name in the coming years] Anyway I was waiting on him to Admonish Dany for being so Obvious with Dario and How she allowed Dario to disrespect her 'husband' like that Dario was challenging ole boys manhood brazenly and openly Tyrion was shredding him with poise, guile and sharp words Dude looked completely guilded . . .. then he has to die . . .. sucked to be him Rocket River
Based on the Greek mythology parallel the following could happen to Stannis: (Spoilered for those who don't want to know) Spoiler The King sacrifices his daughter as suggested by his newly acquired prophetess and concubine Cassandra (Kind of sounds like Mellisandra), when he returns home from the war, some accounts say The King's wife murders him and Cassandra, as revenge for sacrificing her daughter and stealing her husband.
GRRM is known to borrow a lot from history for his stories. Clearly the Titan at Braavos is modeled after the Colossus of Rhodes. The Water Gardens of Dorn are very likely an idea of the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. The pyramids in Meereen are.... well you guessed it, the pyramids at Giza. In A Storm of Swords, Tyrion fashions a giant chain to across Black Water Bay to trap Stannis's ships in the bay once they start attacking with the Wildfire. That was taken directly from the battle of Constantinople where the defenders fashioned a giant chain to keep ships out of the bay.
If you think about Stannis and all the things that's happened to him...he would be pretty desperate. To march back to Castle back would be complete defeat, after a series of defeats. Personally as a book reader I can't see Stannis doing it, seems against the core of who he is. But if I just watched the show all I'd see is a guy that looses and his only victories come from the red witch. The problem is only an insane man would do this and Stannis has always been very pragmatic even on the show so still it's pretty out there.
It's baffling. So many people are convinced Daavos knew (and they may be right) but then that doesn't fit his character AT ALL. He basically threw his life away to spare Gendry, a person he had no relation with and didn't even know, simply because he was innocent. He had every reason to believe that Stannis would kill him for that, yet he did it anyway. Then he "knows" Shireen is going to get killed and does nothing? Makes no sense. I don't think he will actually know in the show, but that is further proof that the show doesn't tell the stories the way they think they are telling them. There's a funny quote from one of the show writers about how embarrassed he was after doing the pilot screening when the test audience didn't know Jamie and Cersei were brother and sister. I just don't think these guys can get the storytelling right. They nail the big moments, but they fail at all the context. Stannis burning his daughter in the show is ridiculous. It was a powerful moment, but from a storytelling aspect it didn't make sense. The only reason we knew it was happening is because we can all joke that when the show gives you the feels about a character they will kill them soon thereafter. That isn't good storytelling though, it's a joke.
Season 4 ends with Stannis curbstomping the Wildlings. Season 5 has trudged along with him at the Wall with this allegedly powerful army. He then marches to Winterfell and gets hit by a snowstorm. That snowstorm and Ramsay Snow's super troopers are the whole of his misfortune.
