Thanks, but this is spoiler-free discussion. You just gave away that a certain character is still alive at page 325. ;)

    "Because of men like you!"

"There are no men like me, there's only me."

Comes straight out of the book.

I actually thought that ending might turn off some of the non-readers. There is such an influx of fantastical elements (dragons/magic/zombie drogo). These things had been more peripheral before.

Damn I'm going to miss this show. After not knowing what was going to happen for the majority of the season, this last hour was some what predictable; still enjoyed the hour though.

I'm struggling with the decision to go to the Library and pick up these books or waiting till next spring for season 2.

So if I were to start reading the second book, it would pick up where season 1 left off?

Yes, exactly where it left off.

The only issue might be some of the minor characters that reappear in the second book that aren't really mentioned in the show.

Either way, George Martin does a pretty good job giving a few sentences of "catch-up" material after each important person in the beginning of each book to remind people who they are.

Just read the series from the very beginning. It would be silly to start from the 2nd book because it will undoubtedly lead you to read the 3rd and 4th, and then the 5th which comes out next month. I bought the 4 book box set for $20 a few days ago and I'm a quarter of the way through the the first book. The show is faithful adaptation so far but the book is much more richer and you would be missing a lot on the subtle details of Martin's storytelling.

Yeah, I agree. I'm halfway through Book 2 and I couldn't imagine not having read the first.

What a fun season it was. I know that George RR Martin is getting some money from HBO but with all the books he will sell because of this series he should be paying them.

It's very cool that people are enjoying it enough to go back and read the books. It really is a great series.

Here's why I disagree that it's a soap opera. The characters in this show have so much more depth and complexity than characters in a soap opera. There may be dramatic turns, and reveals regarding characters, but that alone doesn't make it a soap opera.

It is more low fantasy than high fantasy and that may throw some fantasy fans for a loop, or not be the style that they enjoy. But it still doesn't make it a soap opera.

I always found the "But... but... it's a soap opera" argument pretty funny and weak. And I've seen it used so many times now that it's almost become cliche. I can't say I've seen too many soap operas, but I doubt their this badass and in depth. Not every period piece or fantasy story needs to have epic battles and pew pew magic at every turn. If that's all you looking for then your missing out on some great stuff.

$20 bucks doesn't seem bad. Are the books really long and is it worth buying?

Yeah, they're all pretty long, off the top of my head I'd say they're all 1,000+ pages or pretty close to it. And they're definitely worth reading.

I enjoy the audiobooks, can listen to them in the car or working out or walking the dog. You can find them online if you know where to look.

Roy Dotrice the narrator is awesome.
