fight scene: Stark's men got butt-kicked by Lannister's.
fight scene: some guy fought for the dwarf's freedom.
fight scene: Arya's trainer fought some guys while she escaped.
fight scene: Some guys rescued the crippled kid in the woods.

...and that's about it, I think. Am I forgetting any? (I haven't seen ep. 9 yet)

You should just skip episode 9, it's just more soap opera crap.

When they can't put together a battle for something as big as a war, it makes a fantasy series a little underwhelming.

All the sparring scenes so far have been weak, too. I understand this series is more of a drama than action, but there's more crappy boob scenes than actual fighting scenes. It's more porno than action.

If you want big battle scenes, go watch Lord of The Rings. The producers/writers knew they didn't have the budget to compete with LotR so they went another direction. I think it was the right decision.

again, I can't count how many beheadings and throatslashings there have been and people are complaining about little action?

the first season is all about setting up the events, introducing and developing the characters and the ensuing drama. there is a plot twist and turn in every episode. that's just good tv programming.

    the war hasn't come yet.

I think maybe you're missing the point of this show: it's not really an action/adventure show. It's about the culture and political machinations more than anything else. Any action that occurs exists only to further the "soap opera" storyline. If you want more swordfights, magic spells and special effects, you should watch LOTR. This ain't that show.

I like both. This doesn't have both.

I can understand the establishment of characters and development of plot, and I can appreciate having several different plot lines running at once.

But the whole "she's having an affair with him" and "the boy's in a coma" and "that boy isn't his son"....it's just too much Days-of-Our-Lives.

People getting backstabbed doesn't make good action. Again, I can understand this is more about character development than actual fighting. But the fighting that does occur is very weak, looks like it was choreographed by the Star Wars Kid, and it's a common criticism that the action is lacking.

Is that not fair to suggest the action scenes require more attention?

I think it all boils down to the budget.

Game of Thrones, or more appropriately A Song of Ice and Fire has a MASSIVE world. All the different kingdoms and regions have their own style, each contrasting the other.

In Game of Thrones alone there is Winterfell, King's Landing, The Wall, Vale of Arryn, Vaes Dothrak, and so on and so forth. Going forward the scope of the series only gets bigger. For the most part, the people behind the show have done a great job recreating the feel in the books.

I do agree with the opinion that the fight scenes are rather weak, and the lack of war scenes sucks. The blood and beheadings are cool but the fighting is kept to a minimum.

I thought this show was going to be LoTR too with big battles and hobbits and shires and s**t. I got this character drama that I found extremly intriguing; after episode 1, I was hooked. The level of manipulation some characters weave in this show is absolutely BANANAS.

The way you are listing the points you think are too "soap opera-y " makes me feel you missed the gravity of each situation and how they relate to one another. Seems like you were just waiting for some blood shed while glossing over the major plot points. THE S**T HIT THE FAN IN EPISODE 9!

Switch to Starz, watch Spartacus, problem solved.

Personally, I am liking this soap opera crap better. Even though I enjoyed Spartacus too.

While there hasn't been excessive action, it's not quite fair to say there hasn't been any. Khal Drogo has killed a few people, much of Ned's entourage was killed, attack on the road with Ned's wife, one on one battle scenes including jousting, tyrion's buddy in the Val, etc.

it's been a good mix, to me.

The books are awesome due to the intrigue, mystery, backstabbing, politics...you know, the GAME of Thrones. Fighting is just a small part of it.

It's the main reason the books are so darn good. Martin puts most of his effort in creating complex and interesting characters with the magic/action/battles as completely secondary. The fact that the books are good is because you CARE for characters, and HATE characters, and often, you completely change your mind about a character over time.

It is why the latest Battlestar Galactica series was pretty good (for the most part). While it had some cool action, it was mostly about he characters and how they lived and interacted with each other.

You missed a lot of fighting. Take off the pessimistic puke colored glasses.

    -Rangers vs White Walkers
    -Cat vs Assassin
    -Arya vs Joffrey
    -Hound vs Mountain
-Cat, Tyrion and company vs the Vale clansmen
    -Jon vs zombie
    -Drogo vs pissed off underling
-Starks get butchered in throne room
    -Arya vs stableboy

lots of other violence is in there too (assassin in the market, golden crown, etc).

and that's not including episode 9.

It's a drama. If you don't like it, just don't watch it.

The biggest complaint is the lack of large battle scenes, of which there are several in the book. As many have said, this is purely for budget reasons. At some point, however, they're going to have to spend some money there. I'm hoping HBO foots the bill for several seasons, so I can put up with it. The portrayal of the Stark children's Dire Wolves bugs me. By this point, they should stop looking like dogs. We're not talking about vast battles, either. Some special effects are called for!

I'm a little confused as to how Jamie was captured so easily? Anybody care to expand on it?
