Managed to play Packie's last mission during one of my infrequent times to play my friend's 360. Man, I felt like I was in the movie "Heat". One my favorite GTA missions possibly ever, and the payoff is pretty nice too. I'm surprised it only took me one attempt though, because I've been reading that some people have had trouble with it. For me, the M-16 mowed through the SWAT teamers and the MP5 turned the regular cops into swiss cheese. Still though, I loved it. Wish I had though to save right before it, I want to play it a few more times and maybe take some different routes to safety.
BTW, regarding GTA's graphics, I could understand being disappointed with them (although they're definitely MUCH better than GTA SA). I've sort of become impressed with the game's graphics since it does look quite a bit better than the competition. It has also improved quite a bit from its initial showing IMO. That said, I can see how people might have had higher expectations for a next-gen GTA. I was certainly expecting quite a bit, especially after seeing some of the early Getaway tech demos running on the PS3. Of course, The Getaway is still nowhere to be seen, so maybe that says something about how achievable those graphics were. GTA wouldn't be the first game to disappoint me when it comes to my original next-gen graphics expectations (KZ2 and GT5 are probably the only games that come close to meeting my expectations). Of course, as it has been mentioned, graphics were never a strong point for GTA.
Man, we have some harsh critics (graphics whores?) in this thread! Maybe it's because I just upgraded to PS3, but I wouldn't come close to calling the graphics in this game bad. Maybe it's not up to par with some of the other PS3 titles, but damn, I'm basically just sitting here thinking all graphics on the PS3 are basically different levels of awesomeness. Seriously, it wasn't even that long ago that the PS1 was out and we were playing games with people that had polygonal squares for arms. Are the graphics in GTA4 really so bad that people think it takes away from the experience?
Spoiler Getting Dwaynes backup is the most helpfull ability in the game. That and KIki's ability to get wanted stars off. I beat Three Leaf Clover the first go around using back up. They never died and just kept blasting at the cops. I really like the story in this one. Better narrative than previous GTAs. Cruelest joke in the game in never being able to shag Kate.
FWIW, I wouldn't call the graphics bad, or even close to bad. If GTA's graphics were bad, then I don't know how you would describe the graphics in some other games. I'm just saying that I could see how people might have expected more from a next-gen GTA. For reference, here are some of the tech demos I was talking about (both are pretty old): <object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/STeNCdJ02cQ&hl=en"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/STeNCdJ02cQ&hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object> <object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/uWMjbfY3cP8&hl=en"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/uWMjbfY3cP8&hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object> I sort of have this "never satisfied" approach to graphics sometimes though (unless the graphics are just insane, like in a GT5 or KZ2...maybe Gears 2 as well, guess I'll find out soon). It rarely takes away from the experience for me though, just something I like to nitpick on. edit: Funny thing is that I'm not even really bothered by poor framerate, which is something where it would actually make sense to nitpick.
RC: Fyi, the 2nd video is "no longer available." But I've got to say, that first tech demo is freakin' sweet. There were actually instances where I thought it was a video of real life. What do you think about the graphics in the new Metal Gear game? In your opinion, where would that rank on your list of games with best graphics? I just want to try to get a point of reference since I am no-longer really on top of videogame info like I used to be. I think I am just having a hard time complaining about graphics when things look so amazing compared to past systems. Don't get me wrong, I eagerly await improved graphics as technology advances (and I love having those "woah" moments as a result of graphics), but I guess when graphics start getting as good as they've looked so far on the PS3, the marginal utility between a game like GTA4 and some of the heavy hitters graphics-wise on the PS3 isn't that big. I hope I explained that well enough...
Hmm...the video is still working for me. Here is the direct link to Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uWMjbfY3cP8&eurl= And if that doesn't work, just search for "Getaway 3 Tech Demo." It is WAY more of a tech demo than the first one though (aimed for other developers, not gamers). I'd probably rate MGS4 a notch below the other top games I mentioned (mostly just KZ2 and GT5). Part of that is that the game still looked pretty rough 6-12 months ago (poor framerate, placeholder textures, weird lighting at times, etc.), and I unfairly have some of those images still in my head. To be honest, the last few videos have been really impressive, especially some of the cutscenes (like the scene at the grave). I don't think the team has the technical capabilities of a Polyphony Digital (GT5) or Guerrilla Studios (Killzone 2), but they make up for it in terms of the art design and just their overall attention to detail (something Rockstar does well with GTA IV as well). Of course, MGS4 will be released in about a month, while the other games won't be out until ~12 months (or more) from now. And I understand what you're saying about graphics in general. It certainly is hard to complain about the graphics in GTA IV. In fact, for me, it is more of a "Hmm...that's pretty good, but I think we could do a bit better." Now if we were talking about Madden (or most sports games actually IMO) or "Generic FPS," then I'd definitely be complaining about the graphics, even though they're better than what we had in the PS2-generation. Of course, then you have games like Silent Hill 5 that look worse than the PS2 games.
So I get home from work today. I haven't had much time to play so I decided to take a couple of hours before I go out. Game freezes during the opening loading frames. I turn my Xbox off. I turn it back on. RROD. ****. Guess I'll have to wait a week to play again.
love the game. I'm at 30% or so. I just bought MLB the Show. That's what I've been playting. btw. Little drunk right now, don't wanna pull a fatty. So i'm gogin to jump in bed with my gf. see yall tomoroow.
So I haven't played in like 5 days now. I'm starting to get withdrawals. After my Red Ring of Death issue on Friday, I turned it on yesterday evening just to see. It worked!!!! I hopped in a cab to go over to Ray's restaraunt. When I get out of the cab and it freezes. I turn off my system and turn it back on. RROD. Jesus christ. At least the return box is on its way. I have done this before but don't remember how long it took. Does anyone remember how long it took to get theirs back?
The RROD is still a problem for Xbox's? I thought that issue was resolved. (older system?) I hope nothing ever happens to my PS3. I love it.
I got my first when they first came out. It RRODed a month or two later. Sent it back. So I've had the refurbished for a few years now.
OK, I need some help. I just bought a ps3 yesterday and have attempted to play GTAIV but I'm experiencing a few problems. 1. The color is off. Everything seems a little pinkish/red and I've been messing around with the color on the TV but it hasn't worked. 2. I went out and bought like these special playstation HD auxiliary cables to hopefully help with the color problem while also making the picture better (the five cords with blue, green, red, and white colors). Of course though no sound comes through when I use them. Does anyone have any idea what I should do to fix this problem?
1. The PS3's color palette is warmer than that of the 360s, it is an artistic decision and it depends on your preferences on which looks better. Most websites say it makes the game look more realistic and like a movie. 2. You probably didn't connect it right.
