If the Cards had a gripe it wasn't the ending double play but the strike zone. Honestly I thought the ump was pretty consistent. There were several high balls that were called strikes against the 'Stros, but I guess he wasn't 100% consistent. I think the calls were exactly reversed I would probably be made about the strike zone. I don't know, since I'm an Astros fan though, I am just happy we got the win, and I am glad we started Backe. I would also like to point out that the much maligned Lane is the guy who tied the game up for us after the Cards took that lead.
completely agree with the ball call on berkman, that one was indisputable as far as I'm concerned the edmonds pitch...... gotta feel like we caught a break there.. because he certainly didn't swing at it, but a called strike perhaps?
I'm not seeing it.. and they've just ran three replays from three different angles.. Looks like a clean out by a few inches.
Looking at that replay I think we turned that double play. It was close but it looked like Berkman caught the ball while Mabry's foot was still away from the bag. Otherwise I would that if I was a Card's fan I would be pissed but I think the Cards got more reason to complain about La Russa and Edmonds getting thrown out. Especially the Edmonds' strike looked terrible.
continuing the superstition of not posting during the game (worked in games 2-4!) But I LOVE defense! I've never seen such an incredible double play. There have been fancy ones, but this took 2 PERFECT, ACCURATE, FAST-AS-POSSIBLE throws with a quick turn in the middle. A dribbler that the 2nd baseman has to move left for? You don't even look for the force at 2nd! I LOVE IT ---PS--in the 8th, was anyone else thinking Major League when Rodriguez hit the bomb to center? All I could think as WillyT was speeding up the hill was "Come on Willy" "Come onnnnnnnnnnnnnn" "Yeah" "Yeah" "Yeah!"
The pitch to me looked pretty high and inside. It might've caught the edge of the plate but it looked like it was also above Edmonds' numbers. I definately think it was a called strike and Edmonds' gripe had more to do with Berkman getting a ball in a similar situation. Its true the ump shouldn't take crap from players or managers but throwing a manager out while he's still in the dugout? That seems like pulling the trigger pretty quickly.
WHEW !! Hopefully tomorrow we can bring the bats to the ballpark too. If we can not win ONE of the next 3 games with Pettitte, Roy-O, and Rocket pitching then we don't deserve it. GO STROS !! DD
Yeah the Edmonds call was BS, but you can't blame the whole game/series on that. In Game-1 the unpire suddenly expanded his strike-zone for Isringhausen in the 9th inning, which screwed the Astros...but that is part of baseball. The Cardinals fans will complain, just like we did with the Rockets-Mavs series, but no one will ever do anything about it. The bottom line is it's a 7 game series, and you can't blame it on one or two bad calls. Go Astros !!!
Anyone else think La Russa was just TOO damn persistent in going after the home ump? Not to mention that long string of swears and poking? Even when he was being coaxed to calm down by the other 6'9" ump, he circled around trying to go at it again with the home ump. Postseason or not, that's almost asking to be thrown out. I agree though, Jim Edmonds' tossing was too much. I think the ump just had enough with the Cardinals' complaints by that point.
No way, Card fans can complain about the strike call (definitely questionable), but not Edmonds getting himself tossed. If he had shut his mouth he would have had another chance to get a hit. How are you gonna go and get yourself thrown out when you aren't even out!
WHAT a double play, reminds me of walt weiss's home plate throw out to save the game for atlanta. Great play to end the game with!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
The Cardinal was definitely out at first on the ninth DP. I've been watching it from different angles in slow motion on Tivo and, like has been said, it was a few inches. The runner's foot was coming down onto but not touching the base before Berkman had the ball in his glove. There should be no controversy on that play. The Ausmus home plate tag was real close as the tag was high but it was still in time.
I was going to bring up the reference with the Rockets - Mav playoff series too. One Houston team gets cheated..while the other gets the benefit of the doubt. Hopefully this year our basketball team will get the calls too
Of course Edmonds' should've kept his mouth shut but I'm talking from the perspective of a Card's fan. If it had been Berkman at the plate with the strike call and Edmonds' had gotten a ball in the 7th. I would be mad as hell.
For sure. I would have thrown the remote through the tv, most likely. I was just dogging on Edmond's reaction, not your post. ...and kind of saying that as a Cards fan, I might be more mad at Edmond's for getting himself tossed, than I would be about the strike call.
