Some other really good trailers that I would have paid to see made into a movie... especially considering the alternative... oh yeah, I did pay to see the alternative. They are not as epic as the DC trailer as an advance warning. But, they are for SWTOR / by Bioware. Let me quote myself again. I don't care what it's called. It's useless, because it doesn't show any in game footage. Hell, the "trailer" might have been outsourced for all we know.
Again we come down to the difference between a cinematic trailer thats used to set up story, and a regular game trailer. Have you ever played an MMO? If you want the regular game trailer here you go <object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/83A6zONwAEg&hl=en_US&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/83A6zONwAEg&hl=en_US&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object>
The fact that [Game] is in the topic title along with "amazing trailer", I was prepared for some sweet gameplay. This didn't really raise my enthusiasm for this at all to be honest because they probably just outsourced this to different company to animate it. I get that it's a "cinematic trailer" though so no biggie, I see these type of game commercials on tv all the time, especially with the RPGs. I would rather see gameplay than cutscenes and animations.
Cinematic trailers are made for 1 reason: they get posted on forums. Sony more than made up for the cost of that trailer with the publicity generated from "word of mouth".
I still can't believe after all this you still don't understand its not meant to show actual game play. Have you seen the commercials for StarCraft 2? I guess Blizzard must be trying to "sucker" those people into buying the game showing a cinematic like that.
The obvious comparison for this game is City of Heros/City of Villains. I played both for over two years, was in the beta in fact, and it was a ton of fun and very innovative in that it did not use any crafting system, so there wasn't really any kind of 'economy' as such, so it was all focused on game play. You weren't worried about your 'items', you had an incredible variety available for customization of your character's appearance, and it was just fun. Now this game comes along, which had been in the rumor mill for a LONG time, as well as Marvel's which still hasn't shown. So the question is, how will this game actually 'play'? What archetypes will there be? In CoH/CoV the types were very clearly defined and refined, and there was still a lot of variety within the types. There were several ways to be a tank, a blaster, a scrapper, a healer, a controller, etc etc. Hopefully the new game here will be more than just same-old same-old, but we'll see. Might be worth a month or two tryout.
I haven't read up that much. (They don't have forums?) But, if I had to take a guess it would be similar to Champions Online from a class standpoint. Grab whatever powers you want from the buffet line. Enjoy seeing tank/mages everywhere? BUUUT... I did just read there would be no cross platform interaction. Definitely a bonus.
It looks awesome. I don't care it doesn't have gameplay. Some people need to just enjoy it and stopping being Debbie Downers.
I've been playing CoH on and off since beta. I tried Champions and canceled. I've tried a lot of other MMOs. Graphics aside, nothing has been able to top CoH for me yet. And even at 6 years old, CoH's graphics aren't horrible.
STILL have fond memories. Tanks RULE. My Mighty Termight was an Energy Tank, and no game has ever let me feel like as much of a badass as I did when I was surrounded by a horde of bad guys and just stomping them into oblivion and them not even being able to lay a finger on me. WOOOO!!
The trailer was awesome. People must understand that they make these trailers for marketing because it helps build hype. Awesome trailer could mean they poured in a lot of their budget in advertising and less in game play and testing.
Awesome trailer. This is the kind of thing that needs to translate with the big superhero movies. For example Superman, keep the Clark Kent stuff on a more human level, but the action sequences need to be big, grand and loud with villains whose power levels actually mean something. Hopefully Green Lantern tries to do that. What? The studios are hesitant to do it, because they aren't convinced it would make enough money I bet. The DC animated titles, for example, sell decently but not with the kind of cash that will get the movie studios to put out the resources. Other than centering around Luthor, the plots don't seem to be very related. Non gameplay trailers do kinda suck in that sense (and Sony's always loved to do that unfortunately) but this is pretty par for the course for MMOs. I mean, by their very nature MMOs generally are lacking in graphic quality. I played CoH for a while. You are right it was pretty fun. Really the only MMO I've ever stuck with for any considerable amount of time. The character creation was also great. I remember one of the first days I was playing and a group I was with was fighting some bad guys out in the street. These two guys dressed in what looked like suits came up and helped us out. One of the our guys said to them "hey thanks". They responded "We're on a mission from God." Then they ran off.
They had planned on having the game release to playstation and computer and have the players interact on the same server. But, they just backed down from that only recently. I'm hoping that means they realized they couldn't/wouldn't overcome the disparity in control between keyboard/mouse vs. controller.
