They brought his body to a mosque in Misrata, he's a bloody mess. Any word on his one son who tried to flee? Last I heard he was being fired upon.
Does this mean he was shot dead after he was already captured and subdued? I wonder what the guardians of high morals (those who were so upset about Awlaki and his son) have to say about this?
Actually Guddafi was caught hiding with that golden gun that you see in the kids hand. He was shot at a couple times by the 18 year old soldier and then captured. He died of his injuries, there are videos showing this, nobody shot him after he was taken. Regardless, don't see how this relates to Awlaki and his son.
Yes... Still, those pictures/videos of people dragging the naked corpse through the street are disturbing.
I am not going to judge people that were oppressed for so long, let them do whatever they want, he is dead, his body is meaningless now. DD
Clinton on Qaddafi: "We came, we saw, he died" Secretary of State Hillary Clinton shared a laugh with a television news reporter moments after hearing deposed Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi had been killed. "We came, we saw, he died," she joked when told of news reports of Qaddafi's death by an aide in between formal interviews. Clinton was in Tripoli earlier this week for talks with leaders of Libya's National Transitional Council (NTC). The reporter asked if Qaddafi's death had anything to do with her surprise visit to show support for the Libyan people. "No," she replied, before rolling her eyes and saying "I'm sure it did" with a chuckle. Watch the video here: http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-503544_162-20123348-503544.html
Yes, of course, without a doubt. It just seems to me that the way a society disposes of its dictator is a snapshot of how civilized this society is and at least to an extent an indication of how civilized it is going to be, following the dictator's death.
Reminds me of what happened with Mussolini. From the wikipedia: [rquoter]On 29 April 1945, the bodies of Mussolini, Petacci, and the other executed Fascists were loaded into a moving van and trucked south to Milan. There, at 3:00 am, they were dumped on the ground in the old Piazzale Loreto. The piazza had been renamed "Piazza Quindici Martiri" in honor of 15 anti-Fascists recently executed there. After being shot, kicked, and spat upon, the bodies were hung upside down on meathooks from the roof of an Esso gas station. The bodies were then stoned by civilians from below. This was done both to discourage any Fascists from continuing the fight and as an act of revenge for the hanging of many partisans in the same place by Axis authorities. The corpse of the deposed leader became subject to ridicule and abuse. Fascist loyalist Achille Starace was captured and sentenced to death and then taken to the Piazzale Loreto and shown the body of Mussolini. Starace, who once said of Mussolini "He is a god," saluted what was left of his leader just before he was shot. The body of Starace was subsequently strung up next to the body of Mussolini. After his death and the display of his corpse in Milan, Mussolini was buried in an unmarked grave in Musocco, the municipal cemetery to the north of the city. LOL WUT? Seriously though, how does the reaction of the folks in that video tell you what their society is going to be like?
Libya is a nation of Muslims. ATW fears an Islamist nation resulting from all of this. I seriously doubt that it will happen only because the country of Libya has not been indoctrinated with the same brand of thought seen in other Islamist countries.
I was thinking the same thing when Ceausescu was killed without a proper trial in Romania in 1989 (in contrast to how most other communist dictators were treated after the fall of their respective regimes) - no Muslims involved... It just seems that a more mature society will try to avoid the impression of revenge, as opposed to upholding due process, civility and respectful treatment of the deceased. I am not blaming the Libyans, though, the whole thing seems to have happened in a combat situation, and they have suffered through decades of oppression.
