Yeah but the music he's done the past 5-6 years has put a damper one what he did before. Sort of like when Jordan came back for the Wizards.
wow...we must have really different tastes in music. the first album..the one with Bonita Applebum and El Segundo...sounds very different to me from Low End Theory and from the 3rd one with Award Tour (can't remember the title of the album). they go into much more jazzy samples in Low End Theory and then kinda advance from there, in a way I can't put in words, into the Award Tour album. i thought they were incredibly slick albums...very well put together...with lyrics different from all the other rappers. much smarter...much more clever...much catchier...much more intelligent/heady. and they did it over the course of roughly 12 years or so, with a fair amount of crossover success as well. ultimately, i saw a lot of development from these guys. but let me say, i think their starting point was significantly higher than many of the others i see listed here. to me, rap music reached its pinnacle with these guys. just for my tastes, this is where rap music was at its best.
I heard them saying that they are coming out with an Outkast album by the end of this year. I can't wait....The "Love Below" has become one of my favorite albums of all time. Ludacris as the G.O.A.T.??? Give me a break...the guy is talented lyrically but doesn't have much to say, all he raps about are sex, and bling bling. Cube used to be really tight but needs to give it up...he has completely tarnished his legacy with his crap on West Side Connection. What is your personal Criteria . .what gets the most weight etc? I tried to explain each rapper/group that I chose for the top 10 and were based on Lyrics, style, production, impact on the industry, # of albums that could be considered classics. Anyone that says Tupac doesn't belong in the top 10 is on crack. I agree that Pac's legacy is somewhat tarnished in that people think he is only popular b/c of his death but true rap fans know that Pac was on top of the rap game from his "Me against the World" album and then took it to another level on "All Eyes on Me". I put Dr. Dre in the top 10 b/c of his impact on the industry. His album "Chronic" is an instant classic and propelled rap to the world wide popularity that it now has. I am suprised DMX is not getting more votes. The guy is the only rapper to come out with 2 #1 albums in the same year, within 8 months or so of each other and both in my opinion are classics. I also put him in my top 10 b/c he came out at a time when Biggie and Pac had just been murdered and rap was infested with P-diddy's shiney suits and garbage commercial rap. X brought rap back to its grimmier roots with his raw imagery and story telling.
I guess I'll start another list. Here are my top 10 favorite albums of all time, there are some that are interchangeable with others I didn't include. These are some albums I consider as classic and can pop into the CD right now and jam it from begining to end like it is a brand new CD that I have never heard before: * Tupac - All Eyes on Me * Dr. Dre - Tha Chronic * Doggystyle - Snoop Doggy Dogg * Bone Thugs n Harmony - Eternal 1999 * Notorious B.I.G. - Life After Death * DMX - It's Dark & Hell is Hot * Scarface - Diary of a Mad Man * Jay-Z - The Blueprint * DMX - Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood * Tupac - Me Against the World
Actually the was a group in the 90s called the Goats. They were great. They rapped about politics and deew. They were from Philly also they were friends of the Roots and like the Roots they incorporated live intruments into their music.
That's a list of rap/hip-hop records that I feel are classic and those are artists that made my list on the poll for G.O.A.T. Rappers. What would be on your list?
I've got their album "Tricks of the Shade". I liked that a lot. I think I'll go and dig out the tape now...
What would be your list? This would be a cool thread on its own. I'd like to hear any aficionados answers to these questions: 1. What are your top 10 rap/hip-hop (I guess we're putting the two together) albums of all time? - underappreciated or not known by the common folk goes here 2. What are the 10 biggest rap/hip-hop albums ever? - the "hit records" go here Feel free to subract guys like Vanilla Ice and MC Hammer from this list if you want.
Your list is terribly new school. I refuse to vote. Nas gets close... Rakim KRS-One Run-DMC Kool Moe Dee Beastie Boys Guru and where is the man with the album named G.O.A.T. ??? LL Cool J
"Flavor of the Month" ha ha good comment. Jada has been putting it down since he started with the LOX. He's just barely starting to get the attention he's always deserved.
Come on people! The answer is so clear.... I think Slick Rick and the D.O.C. are being forgotten. They were awesome back in the proverbial day. Missy Elliot is pretty awesome, too...I have to run now and fix my weave.
Man....I can't believe that I forgot about the Fat Boys!! They were so good back in the day with "Fat Boys" and my all-time favorite, "Can You Feel It?" It is a tragedy that the Human Beat Box passed away several years back.
