It's each state's prerogative to determine how they allocate votes in the EC. Dems want to scrap it altogether rather than going through each state, eliminate winner-takes-all, and institute a voting scheme they prefer (at the time)
What a stupid strategy. Republicans would be sabotoging themselves with this. Republicans need every electoral vote they can find in the Midwest to win an election. If they start splitting states like this (Wisconsin Republicans have suggested something like this as well), they'll make it impossible to win. This only helps Democrats long term. Dems would love to take a split of those states given that these states are slipping away from Democrats.
Yeah not gonna happen. Only chance would be the states deciding to vote themselves which would probably hinge on states like Georgia and Nevada. It’s possible if enough Dems win governorships and state houses but still unlikely to happen regardless.
An interesting debate arises again... one big difference, quoting Eric Levitz: "Even an 18th century authoritarian aristocrat thought giving states equal representation in the Senate was outrageous -- at a time when the largest state was "only" 12-times more populous than the smallest. (Today, it is 67-times more populous)"
A national election for the federal executive (president) should be popular vote. One person, one vote is simple and fair. If you're arguing against it, you need to make a very compelling argument. The founding fathers who created the EC did not make a compelling argument. The argument was simply that the pro-slavery founding fathers said "give us outsize representation or we don't join the republic." The others caved, and we got the EC and the senate.
Even more ironic considering that NE is doing away with their split system since Biden and Clinton both won the 2nd Congressional District. Again we shouldn't expect intellectual consistency from the current Rightwing.
I'm not sure about that. It will cost them electoral votes from Red States like MO and IN where the urban districts will go blue. They will pick up votes from states like MN, WI and MI. If this was the case in 2020 Trump would've picked up 4 EC votes from MN which are half of the MN districts. If they use the NE and ME system where the winner of each district gets an EC vote with the overall state winner getting the 2 EC votes for senators the GOP still has an edge given that the House is very close and there is a narrow edge of red states.
One thing that will be good about this is that it will reduce the importance of battle ground states and compel candidates to campaign in almost every state or run a truly national campaign. Republicans can't write off CA as they could win several EC votes in the Central Valley and Orange County. Democrats likewise will campaign in TX to win urban and suburban districts. You might even see Democrats campaign in AL and MS to try to win districts around Birmingham and Oxford.
Republicans aka MAGA white nationalist seditionists are not giving up their power ever without violence. There's no way that the United States can change it's electoral system without likely civil terrorism from the right. Just look at the fight thats about to happen in Texas over the right to vote. The MAGA cult Republicans are willing to do anything and everything to secure their minority rule for a generation. We know our Democracy is in trouble. We know the EC doesn't work in the 21st century. But what happens next realistically is where the conversation needs to be headed. IMO voting rights in southern states like Texas, and Florida need to be where the fight happens the next two years. The Democrats need to go full force at legislating HR1, and also investigating the Republicans like Dan Patrick, and Ron DeSantis for every law they break in the process to try and rig elections moving forward to throw out votes. Do not be shy about putting these A holes in jail because the right will get more and more brazen about stealing democracy if they are not held in check, and if you decide you want to make these reforms to our Democracy in the near future like changing the EC, you are in for ALOT of violence if you do go through with it. If you make Texas and Florida competitive purple states like they should be, then you've flipped the electoral college's weaknesses on its head.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Popular_Vote_Interstate_Compact We really only need Texas, Florida, and another tiny state to enact it for us to go the popular vote system.
It depends. If all the republican states do winner take all and all the democratic states do split votes then that gives the republicans a big leg up.
But Wisconsin is going to be a Republican state in the near to medium term. The demographics there just aren't favorable for Democrats. Dane County (Madison) is booming and is a source of strength for Democrats but Milwaukee is shrinking (to the detriment of Democrats) and the Milwaukee suburbs are still quite Republican. Additionally, Democrats have a lot of room to fall in Southwestern Wisconsin. That area is going to become solidly Republican over the course of the decade. I was speaking specifically about Wisconsin. Winner take all is to the benefit of Republicans there in the long run. They're giving up electoral votes in Madison and Milwaukee for no reason. Wisconsin votes 4% to the right of the national popular vote now. That's a solid Republican leaning nowadays. Now if they did EV splitting nationwide, yes it would be terrible for Democrats simply because they don't' control enough state legislatures. But in Wisconsin alone, its a bad idea for Republicans.
Sure, while I generally agree with this public sentiment, um, welcome to federalism and the 2nd constitutional convention debates? The disparaties between large and small states, while more extreme now, always existed.
I'm not sure everyone is appreciating what Huizenga is proposing here. By apportioning votes by congressional district, they would expose the presidential election to congressional map jerrymandering. It's frickin bad enough right now we have a corrupt congress choosing their own voters, they want to do that to the presidency too. If you think the electoral college is anti-democratic now, just wait till you see the district-based jerrymandered electoral college! I used to defend the electoral college here. After Trump tried to leverage it to steal an election, I can no longer defend it. Now if it's going to be jerrymandered, we need to blow it the **** up!
