davo & BobFinn, Actually, I studied in Australia for a year, and some local friends introduced me to some British sitcoms (Faulty Towers and Monty Python), and I could believe how absolutely fearsome the wit was in those shows! I am so glad they introduced me to it. I was able to catch "Who's Line is it Anyway?" and "Absolutely Fabulous" on BBC when they were still showing it over here, and I rue the day they took them off (*sob sob*). "Drop the Dead Donkey" (is that the correct title?) is also good ------------------ "One who conquers others is strong; One who conquers himself is mighty" - Lao Tzu
1. Simpsons Best Line: There are simply too many to list. 2. Seinfeld Best Line: George (to Jerry): Do you ever get down on your knees and thank God you have access to my dementia. 3. All in the Family Best Line: I can't do it because they are too racial in nature. 4. WKRP in Cincinnati Best Line: Mr. Carlson: As God as my witness, I thought turkeys could fly. 5. Friends Best Line: Joey (to Ross and Chanler's Mom): I'll just go pee in the street. 6. Bosom Buddies Best Line: Kip (to guy dating Sonny): What are you drinking? Guy: White wine. Kip: Sssscccccoootch!!!!! 7. Mary Tyler Moore Best line: Ted: Lou, he's gonna slap me with a subpeona. Lou: I don't care if he slaps you with a flounder. ------------------ "No one gets out ALIVE!" Mango, I remember him. Can't remember his name though. He was always pulling on his hair, and bugs were always crawling on him (he thought so anyway)Very funny show. ------------------ "When your dead, anything's funny."-John Lennon
I second Almu, Three's Company was flat-out hilarious. So is the Simpsons, Friends, and SNL had its moments. Frasier is funny in its own witty way. I'm suprised no one has mentioned Family Ties. Mr.Bean is classic. There are countless others, that are either already covered or just slipping my mind. Azim da Dream ------------------ We don't live for the destination. We live for the journey.
WOW! I don't know how many of you are British/English, but I'm guessing none or not many. That is why I am suprised that a lot of you have seen our sitcoms, and more importantly found them funny! I was under the impression that our humour never travelled that well. I will agree that a lot of our humour can be very harsh, especially when political, and I'd guess you never get to see anything like that in the US. To go along with some of the ones already stated, I'll add the Young Ones and Bottom which both have Rik Mayall and Ade Edmondson in, who do some of the funniest visual humour I've ever seen. Another pretty crude show that is very funny is Men Behaving Badly. The two main guys have some hilarious conversations when they are drunk. Have any of you heard of Red Dwarf or Blackadder(which starred Rowan Atkinson alias Mr Bean)? Anyways, thanks for the props being given to British comedy! ------------------
Here are my all time favorites. Late Night with Conan O'Brien The Drew Carey Show Seinfeld Night Court The Norm Show Kids In The Hall Friends The Cosby Show Monty Python MST3k Simpsons Newsradio ------------------ please venture to atheistalliance and rocketsonline I AM SPARTACUS [This message has been edited by DEANBCURTIS (edited July 08, 2000).] [This message has been edited by DEANBCURTIS (edited July 08, 2000).]
sid- yeah, Red Dwarf comes on Saturday nights here. I've never really watched it that much, but my sister loves it. I think I saw an episode of Black Adder a long time ago. Does it take place a few hundred years ago? The show I'm thinking of had everyone wearing wigs... [This message has been edited by AntiSonic (edited July 08, 2000).]
Antisonic, Yep, you're thinking of the correct sitcom re Blackadder. I can't remember how many series there were but each series was in a different time period e.g. Elizabethan, Victorian, WW2 etc. Rowan Atkinson played different generations of Blackadders and was a mean s.o.b in every one. Still funny though. ------------------
Nobody mentioned Candid Camera (or Candid Candid Camera). Probably one of the most original comedies of all-time. Totally Hidden Video was a rip-off of it but still funny. sid -- I think British humor is, well, not humorous. I HATED the Full Monty, and I much prefer the American Who's Line is it Anyway to the British one. Almu -- I've listed 3's Company as my favorite TV show of all-time in other threads, so try and live with that. ------------------ I Hate Every Bone in Your Body But Mine
The Freak, Don't worry about The Full Monty. Nobody in my family found it funny or particularly good either. It got loads of hype but when I saw it I barely laughed twice. I think our sitcoms are far better than our films. ------------------
Azim da Dream, No disrespect... BUT FAMILY TIES???? Nothing is funny in that show. Urkle is more annoying than Jar Jar Binks. ------------------ "One who conquers others is strong; One who conquers himself is mighty" - Lao Tzu
Family Ties was the show with Michael J. Fox Family Matters was the one with Erkle. ------------------ I have a dream.........his name's Hakeem. DREAMer's Rocket Page
Hey I just remembered. What about Saved by the Bell. Now that show used to kick ass. junior high, high school, and college. ------------------
I can't remember one thing that was funny about Saved By The Bell. uh, Screech? Sure, Kelly Kapowski was great to look at back in the day, but it really wasn't funny. How could I have left off "Norm" and "Drew Carey"...? ------------------
I dunno, keeley... I thought it was pretty funny when Slater kicked Zach's ass that one time. ------------------ WE WILL WATCH THEM FALL... next year, at least.

It's amazing to me how you can grow up loving to watch a show and later on in life, you can't stomach it. But these are some of my favorite classics.
