I remember the format being either a silver goal (game ends at end of a 15 minute overtime period if a team has the lead) for two 15 minute OT's or, golden goal (sudden death, first goal wins). This format was basically, if there's an overtime, they're playing 30 more minutes no matter what. Argentina could have scored 5 goals in the first OT and they still had to play the second one. It's just too much unnecessary soccer.
If I remember correctly, the current format was used in 1994 WC and before. So it is an old rule being revived.
Can someone explain to me what is "OFFSIDE" when two players on the same team are inside the box attempting to score? like for example today Argentina scored right before in of regulation but was called off? When he kicked it to the other guy right there to kick it in? and I've seen it a couple of times in the WC. Can someone example? are you not surpose to do something when attempting to score? like not move first or someting ...
games? the only time they(Ghana) did some acting was against the U.S...but it's not like the U.S team was innocent... they had some drama scenes of their own.
The offensive player cannot be behind the last defender when the ball is passed. The offside call at the end of regulation looked like a bad call to me. The guy was about even with the last defender when the ball was delivered. After that pass, when the two argentines were both behind the defense (one with the ball) I think he has to pass it laterally or backwards, which he did, to Messi. I think it was a legal play, but the linesmen have a habit of calling the close plays in favor of the defense.
Good, except it is the last TWO defenders not one. At the time the ball is passed, The offensive recipient must be at or behind the 2nd to last defender. The planes are parallel to the end lines. There is an exception to this when the ball is passed backwards(sort of like a lateral in football). In that case, you do not have to be behind two defenders but only behind your teammate(the passer) at the time of the pass.
Silver goal was never used in WC. Golden goal only used for two WCs 98 and 02. The old format produced lots of classics. The most dramatic one was probably 1982 quarter finals, France vs Germany. France had a great side lead by Platini and others. It was 1-1 in regulation. France scored 2 in overtime to lead 3-1 but somehow Germnay pulled it back 3-3 like they always do . Then Germany kicked out France in penalty shootouts. Probably the biggest nightmare in French sporting history. Other famous ones: 1966 finals, I think Germany tied in the last minute in regulation (again !) but lost in overtime 2-4 to England. The third goal is still debated till today. 1970 semifinals, Germany score yet again in the last minute to tie with Italy 1-1. The over time had five goals with Italy finally won 4-3. Muller scored in that game. (Muller is the all time scorer in world cup, Ronaldo just tied his record in the world cup) The most recent important over time game I think is in US 94. Romania vs Sweden, I think Romania equalised in the last minute in overtime but lost in penalties. Hmmm........ Now tell me if you think this format is worth it
i like a lot of soccer. you can see which team is more fit. Unfortunately, it favors the team that they will have to play next. maybe they can have two 15 minute overtime periods, if it's still tied, they keep playing but you can add one sub in or something. after the end of 15, they take a breather, and you get one more sub for each period? no, yes? I love soccer hotties.!
I agree with mulletman the argentina players are the masters in flopping skills. another thing that I hated about the game, its when Lavolpe its saying instructions and the strategy to a mexican player, and the argentinan player go there to hear the strayegy WTF was that?
I remember Chris Webber did something similar like that vs the Rockets. He was basically in the huddle with the Rockets.
They went back to the good old format after experimenting with Golden Goal - they found out it didnt work and probably tested out Silver Goal in the EC and other regional championchips before deciding to scrap it all - thank God!
What a game yesterday -- with the winning goal being one of the greatest in WC history. I was very impressed with Mexico's heart in that game -- nothing to hang their heads about.
That answers it....is england playing with a lone striker and attacking from the midfield? I noticed Crouch wasn't in the game with Rooney.
Yep, so basically zero attacking -- a few chances on penalities. The most exciting moment came early on for Ecuador -- A bad touch and a great defensive play -- ball rang off the post.
