SwoLy-D - why doesn't Omar Bravo play in Europe? Of all the players on Mexico aside from Rafa & Borgetti & Franco (who has not impressed me w/los Tri or el submarino amarillo of late) -- he seems like he's good enough to go abroad and hold down a job in the top flight somewhere. Does the Mexican Liga make it hard to buy contracts, or do their players just not want to go that much?
He's playing for the first Cup in the National team... he plays for Chivas, the national Mexicans-only team that stands for nationality there... I'd imagine that he would go later, when he demonstrates he's worth going. First player from Mexico I remember was Hugo Sanchez, winning the Pichichi in Real Madrid, then Luis Garcia with Atletico Madrid, and then Cuauhtemoc Blanco was with Valladolid. I know that after this Cup, Salcido is going to England and Bravo is going to either Spain or France. Marquez played with Monaco, where he honed his skills. Bravo needs this Cup year so that International teams see his game. It's a matter of time. Most Mexican players DO want to play abroad, they just need a chance... someone's gotta give it to him. Right now Salcido is spoken for. I don't really like Franco... he's not producing... plus he's Argentinean... EDIT: I am unaware as to how contracts work with the Mexican teams... is Franco on loan? I don't even know. I know Jared is under a lucrative contract with Bolton for 900,000 pounds.
Agree 100%, the guy hasn't even played a minute in the Premiership, and has only played a handful of games in the Championship. Not to mention before picking him, Sven had never seen him play in person. Bent or Defoe should have been in the squad.
It would be highly unusual, if not impossible, for Franco to be on loan from a Mexican league side to a LFP side - usually when there's a loaner it's a big club loaning a player to a smaller club, and I don't know if they even do inter-continental loans. More likely he was purchased (or he was a free agent and went to Villarreal CF). Borgetti: the thing that surprises me is why it took for this y ear to go abroad where he is over 30 and past his prime. I would think after 2002 (in which he scored a few goals, IIRC) he would have gone over, I would guess that his Mexican club wouldn't let him out of his contract till last year. Not sure when Bravo's expires but he's still in his early 20's, once he's available I'd expect a La Liga side to snap him up.
Mexico will wear the white jersey, green shorts, white socks. Portugal will wear their red uniform. And for the US game: US: white jersey, blue shorts, white socks Ghana: All red GO MEXICO!!!!!
There are inter-continental loans. I think Landon Donavan is on loan to the MLS? I know some others have been as well.
Owen was pretty good in the 02 world cup as well, and has been a dominating scoring force in premier league up until last year where injury shortened his season. I feel like Sven's system just doesn't suit Owen's style of play. They need midfielders that can send timely passes to a slashing Owen at the front and take advantage of his finishing abilities. Due to his lack of size, he's not adapt at taking the high crosses. I think he still has plenty of gas left in his career. I'll let his numbers at Newcastle speak for itself, but I'm deeply saddened that I won't be able to see him play for the rest of the WC. He was the sole reason why I fell in love with watching soccer and the WC.
I think Donovan was straight up released last time. You're right, there are intercontinental loans, but they go from Europe to NA/SA (sometimes) - or generally big club to smaller club, not the other way around.
This is what I HATE about soccer, that goal keeper is so full of crap....play on until the play is over...... DD
Not since last Friday. I don't know if they've shut it down or if they have just gotten overloaded as it got passed around.
Mexico with a chance to tie the match on a PK and the guy blasts it over the crossbar...what a horrible attempt. DD
