Soccer has the best looking trophy from any other sport.

Can anyone think of a better trophy?

    yes.

Before I say why, do they only have one World Cup Trophy?
I remember reading the original World Cup was actually a cup, and the one that is currently in use is a new model that was crafted in the 70s or 80s?

So is there only one trophy that is handed out every year like every sport, or is there one trophy like the NHL?

My point being is that, there is only one Stanley Cup Trophy. There isn't two Larry O'Brian Trophies sitting in Les Alexanders office.

There isn't six Larry O'Brian Trophies in Jerry Reinsdorf Trophy case.

See those little squigly lines? Your name is forever eternalized. It gets etched in there.

You think about this. Pretend you are a scrub player, the last guy that gets to play in a shift. Your name is up there with the greats of the games. Your name is on the same trophy as a Steve Yzerman, or a Patrick Roy.

    you know something,

isnt there usually some type of breakout song at the world cup?

Remember in 1998, it was the damn Ricky Martin Song. The Cup of Life.

and in 2002, it was Elvis, and whatever dj it was.

    im surprise there wasnt one.

Then, they can just melt the old cup and make a bigger cup and etch back the old names on the new cup.

The original World Cup Trophy was called "Jules Remit Trophy" but was belonged to Brazil permanently when they won their third World Cup in 1970.

The current trophy is called the FIFA World Cup Trophy and cannot be won outright.

    FIFA World Cup Trophy

And Kam, please accept my apology for the offence in that Houston Rainstorm thread.

They remove a rung of it, and put that in the hall of fame, and use another one.

I read that the cup only has 17 spaces for winning country names. After that, I think in 2038, they will make a new one. I forgot were I read that though.

I'm telling the truth. I played for the central Texas team called the "weapon". We had to drive up to Arlington where the league was. We played teams like the Fort Worth United. I can't remember too many of the other teams, but they were all DFW based. I gave it up in high school to play baseball and basketball.

I've always wondered why kids who can't quite cut it at other sports (football, basketball.. even track) don't go hard into soccer to try and get a scholarship?

If half the inner-city kids whose hoop dreams fall short concentrated on soccer by age 15-16 we'd probably be fielding some pretty damn good teams..

Pretty sure ESPN isn't allowed to show it, since ABC bought the rights.

Although ABC and ESPN are both owned by the same company.

    But hey, who's counting?

    Zidane penalty! 1-0 France!

THe BBC commentator - Martin Tyler? - mentioned immediately that the penalty decision against Materrazi was "neutral" in the context of the whole World Cup - because the Italians got a soft penalty against Australia. Talk about kicking someone when you're down :)

Umpire is the same one who reffed England-Portugal for anyone keeping score. He's booked two players in the first 10 minutes

In all honesty that was a weak call in the box. No penalty as far as I saw. Now let's see how Italy responds.

Ok now the french should not make the mistake of playing to defensive the rest of the game, if they do that, they can loose.

in 1974 we got a penalty in the first minute of the finals, and scored, but we still lost :(
