    Wow, very noble.

Especially considering the victims don't usually have that choice.

An accessory to murder is just as guilty as the one who pulled the trigger.

Speaking of accessories to murder, my wife was eating at the Cloister Treebeard's yesterday and Rusty Yates sat down next to her. She got up and left.

Once they sort out the details of the 4 murders, it looks like all five will be looking at serious time.

Probably administrative costs. IIRC there are safeguards (chain of reviews) before a person is executed. It's the price society pays for the ultimate punishment.

Confessions help me in terms of my support/non-support of the death penalty, though the details of the confession and the circumstances surrounding how they were obtained can be important, as well.

We've seen people exonerated by DNA who had confessed at one point (as well as illegitimate confessions obtained fraudulently or through force), so just word of a confession alone isn't enough to convince me; however, if the confessions are legitimate, then my objections to the death penalty lessen.

But any remaining opposition would come from the fact that, even if this is a slam-dunk/they're definitely guilty case, the punishment remains and is used in far less slam dunk cases.

So, I'd rather "definitely" guilty people not be able to receive the death penalty until such time as the "probably" and "maybe" and "not at all" guilty people stop getting it.

i'm against the death penalty. even in cases where i'm reasonably certain of the guilt of the defendant. i'm a human being...i make mistakes. human life is too precious to walk that tightrope, in my view.

For someone so 'enlightened' you sure do hate everyone but yourself. Why is it that the only things you seem to contribute lately are insults?

    How about this case?

    All the defendants have confessed.
None of them show any remorse.
The only question they ask is how much jail time they'll get.
    They've killed 4 people which shows it wasn't a one-time mistake.

I'll take it a step further...

I'm against the death penalty, even in cases I'm positively certain of the guilt of the accused. It has little to do with the potential for error (I can't imagine 20 years in prison is a treat for an innocent person) and everything to do with the nature of the punishment.

I hate it when the people on death row say that execution is wrong and that it is murder. So many of them couldn't care less of the rights of the people they murdured.

Alot on this list think that they had their rights taken away.

Please add 5 to that list.

I'm against the death penalty too. However, I wish they'd crack down on the prison system some. Bed, A/C, 3 meals, no work (though it will get you some privileges and/or time off), full cable, rec time. I'm not sure if it's true now but a few years ago it was said that they could get Playboy, Penthouse, etc because it cut down on the prison rapes. Bed, A/C, meals ok but lock them down unless they want to learn a trade but no TV or rec time. And time served is time served.

I think they give them too much so that they won't riot. My response to a riot wouldn't be a pretty one but after a couple, I think they'd get the picture.

    But that's just me...

So living your life out in prison with the ability to see your loved ones when they visit and to communicate with them is proper punishment for depriving someone else of the same abilities?

I knew Salee because I dated her friend back when I was in highschool. I just saw her 4 weeks ago when I was in Houston and now this happens.. Im just in awe in what people are capable of. It made me sick to my stomach when those people charged with these crimes had no sense of guilt. I hope they get what they deserve because not only was my friend a victim but two others.

She was everything people described her as and did not deserve any of this. She was one of those people you were proud to call your friend, even though I didnt get to see much of her in recent years, the memories of the times we would always hang out I'll cherish forever.
If you guys could please say a prayer for Salee, her boyfriend, and her family.

With some crimes....there simply is no 'fair' punishment. The guy who's dead...and his family...they lose no matter what.

I happen to disagree with with the death penalty.

I also disagree with chopping off the hands of thieves.

Many of you probably agree the hand chopping punishment is barbaric. Some of us think the death thing is equally so.

I think chopping off hands is barbaric because it isn't a punishment in proportion to the crime.

I think anyone who so willfully and mercilessly takes away the right to live of someone else (not to mention raping them beforehand) gives up their right to complain about a punisment being 'barbaric.'

We're not talking about stoning or torture.
