That first requires getting a real starting PG plus a real backup to take all 48 minutes, no? It takes 2 PGs to make Francis a SG, exclusively. I don't see that as a necessity, certainly not worth trading starters for, and I just don't see too many availabe PGs who I'd give 35 mpg to. Unless you get exactly what you want for a Mobley trade, putting him to the bench for 30mpg and continuing to give SF about 20 PG minutes can seriously limit the amount of time SF and CM are on the court together. That is not that bad. I'm just saying that is definitely your measuring stick when gauging the effect of trading Mobley. It has to work better than benching Mobley to 30mpg and using the MLE on a vet PG. Like Crisco, I'm just not that impressed with Tinsley versus using a revolving door of vet PGs. Maybe I'm wrong, and we can get Tinsley and use an MLE on a pure shooting guard. But I just think our PG should be a leadership-type vet, and there's no reason to make SF exclusively a 2.
Im going to agree with Lynus for most of this. We dont have enough to get Kidd. I think we are more than likely going after Jason Terry - a guy I like and who would fit this team well. Michael Redd would be a great asset at SG. No clue on the PF from the West. Best bet would be Odom. No way in hell we could afford Brand Brand and Kidd are pipe dreams with the trade bait we have. My best guesses: PG East - Terry SG East - Redd PF West - Odom
Crisco, Brand is already max'd out wrt salary cap issues concerning the Clippers. I'm not so sure the Clippers are under the cap this summer, unless they purge nearly everything. Brand, Odom, Maggette and Miller are all in their option 4th Yr. Thus, on July 1st, they each check in at a salary cap hit of 300% of their current salary. (btw: Patricia's salaries are higher but don't follow the 1999-00 Rookie Scale.) For salary cap purposes: Brand = caps out at the max = ~$10m Odom = $8.89m cap hit Miller = $6.15m Maggette = $5.17m These numbers don't change until an offer sheet is signed. That right there is $30.25m in cap space. Then Wilcox ($1.72), Wang ($2.1m), Dooling ($1.88m), Jaric ($2m), Ely ($1.36m), Quentin ($1.5m) and the $6m in exceptions take you up to: $46.8m Now add in a #5 pick this year ($2.2m) then you get: $49m in team salary. This number does not count Kandi, Piatkowski or Rooks. So, even if they renounce all their unrestricted free agents, I do not see how the Clippers are under the cap come free agent signing time, unless they renounce their exceptions, and that still only get you to $43m, which might be higher than the cap...(What is the estimated cap?)
why would we want jason terry - who is essentially another steve francis clone??????? terry is a shooting guard playing the point! if we're going for a point guard, he needs to be a ball distributor - otherwise we could just keep steve at the point.
Plus, the new Yao super-hero jerseys are going to send revenues through the roof! Good math HP on the salary cap difficulties of obtaining Brand via sign and trade. I would point out another thing, using deductive reasoning. Doc already knows the Western PF the Rockets are targeting, and yet he thinks Odom and Miller will end up as Rockets. So Brand must not be the PF Doc is talking about, because would he really think we would steal Odom, Brand and Miller combined from the Clips? Brand would be a super pickup, but is probably a pipe-dream.
Doc, just tell us one thing.. Are the Rockets ready to blow this team up? Have they come to their senses and decided that Francis needs another PG and Houston needs another star?
We can get all the damned players in the world, but if they all just stand around while one player has the ball its not going to matter. This has been the Rockets offense for as long as Rudy T has been in charge. It just went from inside out to outside in with the departure of Charles and Hakeem. This is what needs to change first and foremost. If it's rudy's offensive system that causes this, then change it; if Rudy can't get his players to run his offense, then change him or them or both.
Wouldn't "Blowing up" the team involve trading a primary star? What does "blowing up" other teams usually mean? Blowing up the Bucks was trading Allen and Robinson Memphis traded Bibby and Shareef Denver => McDyess Kidd/Marbury trades essentially blew up those teams as structured Is "blowing up" a team trading Mobley/EG? Was trading Van Horn blowing up NJ? I'd call that reshaping. If you want to do a trade that the league will look at as "blowing up" the team, doesn't it start with trading Francis. Wouldn't blowing up Boston have to start with either Pierce or Walker? Sorry, this might only be a semantic point, but we aren't blowing up the team by trading Mobes for a SG or PG.
....because Jason Terry averaged 7.4 assists last year and just over 17 points. Yeah he can score, but 7.4 assists is 7.4 assists. Honestly, I haven't seen him play that much but his numbers look like those of a guy who looks to pass. I'm curious as to our cap situation....Les obviously didn't want t go over the cap, but how much more money is he making with Yao on this team? Someone mentioned a better TV deal next year, along with the Asian media coming in. Especially if we start winning and Yao only gets better in an even larger role, new uni's that fans actually want to BUY (god, I hope so), new arena....I don't know, but it makes me wonder if the cap isn't as much of an issue as it once was. Given what our cap-willingness could be, I don't think that Jason Kidd would be as out of the realm of possibility as he once was. That said, I think Brand and Miller are definitely possible acquisitions.
Of course it does. I just thought the discussion was about docs post, and the part about Francis moving to the 2 was the most absolute, non-enigmatic part of the whole post. I understand and probably agree with your druthers, but tell us your what you would like if Steve gets 30+minutes at the two next year. I personally think Cat would have to go before next year, if that happens. I'd rather slide down a razor blade into a pool of alcohol rather than see Moochie start.
Oh, GATER and I thought salary cap stuff was getting in the way of the thread, so I deleted it after posting. But since you liked it, I put it back. btw GATER, did you get my email showing how buying out Moochie in a lump sum at a reasonable discount rate does not gain us more than a 2-3yr vet minimum of spare change?
Why this guy named Moochie is so lucky. He gets **** load of money even when he is cut from the team. What has he done? Screw our games and get paid for leaving.
Good point, that I also happen to agree with, verse. Someone mentioned Alvin Williams, who I think would be a good fit at the point alongside Steve. In regards to the Rockets releasing Moochie outright, I am fine with that as long as doing so doesn't tie CD's hands financially. Maintaining our spending flexibility will be very important over the next few offseasons.
The only PG i would rather have for the Rockets is T.J Ford.. He is too quick and he sees the floor well.. a good combo. I would trade eddie and cat just for him!
heypee: you are 100% correct, imo. if steve and the franchise (yao) are our centerpieces, everyone else is really a satellite. switching satellites is not a "blow up" maneuver, imo. that's just a matter of finding peices that complement the core. Lynus: ok. thank you for admitting you haven't seen him play much. knowing that, i'll summarize his game for you: in four words: poor man's steve francis. jason terry is incredibly quick, has a decent jumper, great penetration ability, can go left or right, and is capable of putting up a lot of points in a short amount of time. that said, he is not mentally capable of focusing both on his offense and in getting his teammates the shots that they desire. defensively, he is, once again, very similar to francis. quick hands and has the ability, when motivated, to stay in front of his man. he isn't nearly as strong as francis, though, and when you couple that with his height, is a strong candidate to get beat up by bigger guards. his assist numbers are good - yes. that, though, is attributable to glen robinson's catch and shoot ability and for the driving terry does. the only problem with his driving, though, is that he tends to pass as a bailout (sounds like francis again, i know). he's not afraid to take the big shot, and has the ability to stop on a dime for pull up midrange jumpers...something he should do more of. in short, he is a short shooting guard. as soon as dan dickau develops, atlanta plans to move terry to the 2 guard - where he has absolutely flourished at times this year.
hp, thx for the info. I thought maybe the Clipps still had caproom to somehow massage a non byc sign and trade, but was too lazy to do the research. One more question - does this mean all the Clippers fas will be byc, or just the restricted fas? Good luck finding a 3rd team to dump salary on to make a Clipp trade work, trade gurus.
