To counter concerns about Iraq, Bush intends to reiterate his assertion that Iraq has weapons of mass destruction and is linked to Osama bin Laden's al-Qaida network, officials said. But new evidence of those charges will not be revealed until next week by Secretary of State Colin Powell, perhaps at the United Nations, officials said

If this amounts to nothing, as has been the case several times previously, then you can see the support falling even much further. Is it possible that if Bush and Blair go with 80% and 50% against in Britain and the US respectively, Bush and Blair will be one termers even if the war goes as planned?

What surprises me is that with all their resources why can't they come up with some better evidencefor their positions? It is wierd.

This sort of gets us back to the role of a pretext event that the author envisions.

As far as links to bin Laden? Don't you think that Bush would have revealed these earlier rather than let support for his war dwindle down so far.

No, I'm not justifying the Spanish American War. This author brought it up, called it an imperialist war and compared it to the current situation with Iraq.

He is saying a lot more than that abstract point. If that was the case he could have done it rather easily, without bringing up Nazi Germany and past American "imperialist" wars. In the very least it's the type of code people accused Lott of using (and I believe he did use).

That is just silly. You think he didn't put the Nazi Germany line in there for impact greater than you are stating? That's either naive or disingenous on your part. Second, it would not be outrageous to say both Nazi Germany and the US have people. That is indisputable FACT. It IS outrageous to say the US will act in a manner similar to Nazi Germany, who dressed up their own soldiers and fabricated an attack as justification for invading a neighboring country that INDISPUTABLY posed NO THREAT to itself. An action followed up by MASS EXTERMINATION of the indigenous population. Even if the US does invade Iraq it is offensive and OUTRAGEOUS to suggest we will act in a similar manner to the above example. If you don't see it then I truly believe you are purposely being dense.

It is outrageous to suggest a US intervention in Iraq is similar to the Nazi invasion of Poland.

Despite the desire for territory, riches or power that drive most wars, regimes
itching to fight almost always find an immediate pretext
    . When Germany
launched its long-prepared blitzkrieg against Poland in 1939, it claimed it was
avenging cross-border attacks by Polish soldiers, who seized a German radio
station and broadcast hostile statements. Newspapers around the world carried
the story. After the war, it was revealed that the attackers were German SS
troops dressed in Polish uniforms. As Hermann Goering. commander of the
Luftwaffe, said before being sentenced to death at Nuremberg, "The people can
always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. . . . All you have to do is tell
them they are being attacked, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of
patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any
    country."

    HS,

The story is about pretexts for war and not the specifics of the wars themselves.

Three past wars were mentioned: Spanish American War, WW II, and Vietnam War. If the author sole purpose was to equate Bush with Hitler, he would have only referenced WW II. IMO, the author goes out of his way to give two prior American trangressions to counterweight the Nazi reference (and all that implies).

The high ranking Nazi's were much better at playing the political game than the Bush administration is.

All he is talking about is how leaders convince their countries that war is neccessary. No where does it say that going to war against Iraq would be the same as Hitler marching on Poland or France.

BTW, LBJ was a democrat who brought about welfare, and they mentioned him doing the same thing, so it could be argued that this isn't from the left.

My point is not that his sole purpose is to equate Bush to Hitler. I take offense at the comparison between Nazi Germany and the US. Fundamentally the factual situation and the motive, or intentions if you will, are factually so different as to make it more than a stretch, but rather an offensive attempt to radicalize a possible intervention into Iraq.

Consider also that even he admits a the Spanish American War was precipitated by a mistaken impression that the Maine was blown up, not that there was some conspiratorial attempt to justify invasion of a non-threatening neighbor. That in and of itself makes it incomparable to the intentional maskirova (to use a tom clancyism) of the Germans. The Vietnam comparison may be more applicable although I believe the factual disposition of the Gulf of Tonkin incident is still disputable. However, please note that I did not protest that, unlike the incomparable Nazi example.

fatfat, did you see the State of the Union? He explained his position on Iraq clearly. If you still don't know it, you're just being lazy.
