My grandmother was born in a wagon and lived to see a man on the moon. But WW1 and WW2 and the Cold War were huge catalysis-es of innovation. Now life is so easy, billions of people can thrive and propagate working as retail clerks and assembly workers. I passed by a show yesterday where workers were filling sardine cans with cut sardines. There was a big rack of 144 cans and they could fill them in a couple of minutes. Once they did another rack appeared, all day, every day. If that is not the embodiment of Hell, I don't know what is.
Certainly tedious work. But most people are stupid and it's good that there are jobs like this for them. If you think that's bad, take a look at Dirty Jobs. On one of the shows, there was a job where all these workers did all day was stack bricks. So you add the tedium sardine canning with bone breaking labor.

It is nice, every once in a while, to pause and be grateful for technology. <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/8r1CZTLk-Gk&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/8r1CZTLk-Gk&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>
This. If there are aliens on that moon that other thread is talking about.......they dont have **** on us..... or do they?!?
War = Innovation. Do you think the lack of a 'chief' rival maybe stifling innovation? just a question . . Rocket River
Just think of the internet, computers, and cell phones in the past 10-15 years. You had to go to the library or know someone personally to get answers. Anything you want to know is at your fingertips now. Who played the father in the show Alf? What does Marissa Miller look like naked? What's the best way to make chili? What does Keeley Hazell look like naked? How do I fix a leaky faucet? What does Natalie Portman look like naked? How do I get in contact with my friend from high school 10 years ago? What does she look like naked? Who played point guard for the Houston Rockets in 1972? BAM! Thank you intertubenetcomputermagic.
A great marvel indeed. I still want us to make the next leap to colonizing other planets one day. That would absolutely kick-ass. That is if our government ever gives a damn to give NASA decent funding one of these centuries. That disappoints me greatly.
Yep. With 5-hour weeks people won't be so busy. They might watch more movies, spend time with their family, and maybe even read more books. After all, knowledge=power. And what happens to our social structure and other forms of power organization when just 1/2 of Americans become well-educated people? A tiny group of people would rather that not happen. But hey, if you say stuff like this, you're crazy. Welcome to the world of Catch-22
