I was thinking the same thing. It isn't like anyone was advocating sending mail bombs to the CEO's of those companies.
Tell your assistant principal that: 1) its nearly impossible to avoid the companies import as they are the largest co's 2) All of the companies listed as importers also make up most of the domestic production 3) if we were able to make a dent in those companies by boycotting, thousands and thousands of jobs would be lost in Houston alone, as all 5 have huge offices here in Houston and 3 of the 5 are headquartered here 4) Citgo, Sunoco, Sinclair, BP Amoco/Phillips, and Hess have little or no local presence and I doubt we will be going to neighboring states to fill up or buy oil. OH BY THE WAY... this information came to your pricipal via a mass email that has been circulated for the last year plus ending with "please send this to all you know to stop the funding countries who engage in terror against the US."
Thats a little misleading. Some of those companies don;t have the resources/connections to get the oil from the middle east. Therefore, they get a company like Shell, Amoco et al to "back to back" a cargo. For example, Citgo will call Shell and say that they need some Iraqi crude. Shell will get the cargo and sell it to Citgo without ever really taking possesion of the ship...and Citgo knows full well that the crude is coming directly from Iraq. Meanwhile, Shell marks up the cargo and makes about 200K on a "paper" deal with limited or no risk.
Also to clear up some confusion, I don't think the Asst. Principal was the originator of the email. It started out in 2002.
I will back you up. I don't think that you are at fault for this as I assume you are just taking something that a person in a position of authority stated and you put it in a thread. I assume it is not your opinion. I can not speak for every one, but I feel that many of the responses are directed at the asst principal. I feel it is very irresponsible of him to make statements such as this before many students who may not know any better.
Speaking of oil, can anyone hook a freshman in petroleum engineering up with a summer internship for this summer? I know you're out there!
