I'll do it since you probably will never do it. Yang Yi report: July 4th morning (beijing local time), Brent Barry decided to take the offer from Houston Rocket., 24 milions for 4 years.
I agree with you on that. So I didn't accuse him of changing Yao's quote. I'm accusing his sloppy journalistic style that gives people legit concerns over his credibility.
Yes I read Chinese, and in fact, I read most of the Chinese reports concerning Yao Ming and the Rockets. I do notice the debates about Yang Yi's creditability on those forums, just as those happening on this forum from time to time. I just doubt the creditability about your statement when you claim "most fans in China..." without a single poll backing it up, and I have to challenge that. Personally, I think the fact that Yang Yi wrote Yao Ming's first biography speaks for his creditability.
This is like comparing T-Mac vs R Miller, or Yao vs Rik S, or Kobe vs Stephan Jackson. Not even close! Yang Yi is a reporter for Chinese media. His style is to draw as much Chinese sports readers as possible. Lots of stuff in his report will be considerred too confidential to be reported in the US mainstream media. Comparing his report to tabloids reports is a fair comparison. However, lots of controversial stories, especially about celebrities, tend to break in the tabloids before the mainstream media. I am not saying Yang Yi reports are to be trusted with 100%, but his stuff, especially quotes from Yao, is certainly much more creditable than Chad Ford. The reason is simple: he actually has a real insider, Yao himself. I don't know Yang Yi personally. Whether he sells more copy of the newspaper is none of my business. I am not defending Yang Yi. It's more like I am defending the posters in the BBS who actually took time to find/translate his reports. Let's compare the recent track record, shall we? Yang Yi ====== Yang Yi has been reporting for Yao Ming for more than 2 years, before Yao even entered NBA. He has break lots of insider stories not reported anywhere in the US media. Nobody has been able to verify any of these stories as lies. Some of the ones that I remember: * When hiring a new coach in 2003, Yao gave 3 names: Larry Brown, JVG, and Scott Skiles. * When JVG returned to Madison Square Guarden, Rockets blew Knicks by 30 points in the fourth quarter but JVG still let the starters keep beating the Knicks to death. How JVG let players go out partying that night, even suggesting the bar. * In 2002-2003 season before a home game vs Memphis, Francis went out partying the night before and couldn't play. Rudy T gave the reason of knee problem instead. Chad Ford ======== Chad Ford is known to call his copy and paste job "Insider" info. Let's use the recent T-Mac trade example, since it is still fresh from everybody's memory. * T-Mac trade rumor became a hot topic after T-Mac said at end of season that he would like to play with Yao Ming in Houston. * Chad Ford's "ESPN Insider" first report on the T-Mac trade was posted on ESPN on Monday, June 21. It is titled something like "T-Mac is not going to Rockets". * A few hours after Chad Ford's Insider was up, Jim Gray reports that T-Mac to Houston deal was near complete. * Ford's insider was quickly pulled out since it looked rediculous with Jim Gray's report side by side on the ESPN NBA homepage. * Ford tried desperately to spin his insider, replacing it with a fan poll on the trade, including a topic asking which trade is best for Orlando among offers from Rockets, Suns, and Pacers. Of course, the majority of the response was Rockets. * The trade hit a snag quickly when Francis said he doesn't want to play for Orlando. On June 23, Ford put his Insider back on ESPN homepage, insisting Sun's offer of Marion, #7 pick, and Jackobson is way better than Rockets' offer and Suns has a much better chance of landing T-Mac. * On June 24, Suns traded away their #7 pick to Chicago, another slap on Chad Ford's face. * On June 30, T-Mac to Houston trade became official, ending Ford's meaningless run/spin of his "Insider" info.
At that same time, there was another BREAKING news from chinese media (not sure if it is written by Yang Yi) which says: Canadian point guard Steve Nash said on July 3rd that he has has already signed an contract with phoneix suns, which is 100 millions for 5 years. Suns are also going after Kobe, could be a 160 millions dollars big offer. http://china.nba.com/2004/07/06/25/news220872545.shtml I am not here just trying to bash chinese sports media, but sometimes, you can not trust them!
I see nothing wrong here. Barry CAN accept the offer but he CAN'T sign until 7/15 because of league rules. That's why we say we should hold our judgement until July 15th before we make a judgement on Yang Yi's credibility.
It's from Xin Hua news agency, not Yang Yi. To blame Yang Yi for other people's mistake doesn't sound fair to me.

My translation: "based on what I learned from Orlando and other US columnists, T-Mac is not an easy person to deal with. He is very arrogant, doesn't really like to communicate with others. Many Orlando players don't really like him. A player like that, although he's league's scoring leader, I hope he can find his right place in Huston." "Base on Yao Ming's personality, I can guarantee you he won't curse anybody on newspaper, but the relationship between Yao and T-Mac will be very subtle, more so than his relationship with Francis. In the past few days, Yao keep calling Francis, but still waiting for T-Mac's call. I believe that implied what Yao's thinking. " The only information here is Yao called Steve, but not Tmac. Rest of those are just Yang Yi's take, and Yang Yi pointed out that himself. I don't have to take Yang's opinion seriously, but I still can't see Yang Yi made things up without proof of Yao calling T-Mac.
OK, guys. Someone please start a Yang Yi thread. This is getting out of control here. Are we still talking about Brent Barry?
How can you critize Yang Yi's style when your own style is so sloppy??? You dared me to translate it, I said I've already done it--you can check it in this thread. Are you blind? Then you turned around pretending never heard of me and did it again yourself. I am not here to defend Yang Yi, I just want some justice when people bash someone w/o concrete facts. I've said if BBarry ends up not signing up with the Rox, you then can bash him for making things up. Isn't that fair?
I'll stop here and go to bed. Wait for July 15th to come. To be honest with you, I'd really have Steve and Barry than T-Mac and Barry. Oh well, what do I know.
Exactly. His articles consist of "fact" and his own "opinion". U have to be very careful to differentiate them even if u read the original articles in chinese. The problem is: after the translation, either professionally or unprofessionally done, the "fact" and "opinion" are not so clear any more. Then after 3 pages of discussion here, the "fact" and "opinion" are all mixed up. The writer's opinion becomes fact, or vice versa. Take the JVG's roar at the locker room as an example. His fact is that "JVG roared at the locker room". His opinion is that "Every time after JVG's roared, the team would play selfless". After the translation and a lot of discussion, the "fact" becomes "JVG roared at the guards to pass the ball to Yao". So personally I only read his articles' direct quotes only.............and take them with a grain of salt, just like any gossip columns.
Ok, enough with the arguing over the Chinese media. This is still an English-based forum, so don't post in Chinese. I think we are all supportive of posting things from outside sources and that's great. But, there are many on here who are always going to treat reports from the Chinese media with skepticism and others who will take them as gospel truth. We all just need to accept that an move on.
