I would say John McCain is a war hero. And I do not think Kerry fills the bill. And no, niether does "43."

That said. I can't support a veteran that slams his own fellow vets and government, going with popular opinion (as he is now) within months of serving.

Something was ingrained in me during the '80's that I can never, ever, no never forget. I'm sorry, but I don't trust communist sympathists. I remember hiding under desks during drills... and I know several older folks (my parents generation) remember doing that during the Cuban Missle Crisis. The Cold War (my parents generation through mine) was enough for me to never forget the threat of communism - and NOW a guy who ran thick with that crowd of leftists is asking me to vote for him to run my free country? Ummm... No!

Ted Turner, and all of his media might, cannot buy a vote for president from me. Even if the voice of Darth Vader is the voice of CNN (Communist News Network). :p

I wouldn't call Kerry a "baby killer" by ny means, but he's close to a communist sympathizer.

And the communist threat that is currently on the globe is enough for me to not vote a "commie friendly" into office. All the tea in China ain't worth it.

Negotiations are one thing. Sleeping with the enemy of freedom is another.

Look at the polls again, IROC. It seems that popular opinion has decidedly turned against the war in Iraq.

Again these accusations of being a communist?!? He went to some rallies that Jane Fonda happened to be at. End of story. There is NO evidence that he ever had even remote contact with communist groups upon his return, except when he crossed their paths at anti-war rallies.

Come on, are you being serious? Commie friendly? Where did you pull that one, from your friends Bill and Rush?

Kerry has not slept "with the enemy of freedom" that the GOP accuses him of any more than Bush sleeps with the people Moore accuses him of. This is a disgusting attack on his character with no basis in fact.

American communists and other leftists were extremely strong supporters of, and participants in, the Civil Rights movement. Does that discredit the movement because MLK and others were "sleeping with the enemy?"

What paranoid school did you attend in the 80's? The only drill we did where we had to touch the floor was the "classic" Dick Van Dyke Stop-Drop-N-Roll fire drill.

His group, the Vietnam Veterans Against the War, were a hard-core, far left radical bunch with strong, pro-Communist leanings. That is irrefutable.

so if the Jim Rassman story as he tells it is true, you wouldn't consider Kerry to be a hero? What incentive does Rassman have to lie about it?

Why do you consider McCain to be a hero? Because he was a POW?

Homer: That Timmy is a real hero!
Lisa: How do you mean, Dad?
Homer: Well, he fell down a well, and... he can't get out.
Lisa: How does that make him a hero?
Homer: Well, that's more than you did!

Thanks, Deji. Heroin was a huge problem over there, and I have no doubt that getting it as available as possible was an objective of the North Vietnamese intelligence command. Besides those from my friends, including the one who became addicted, I heard many stories about it at the time from the vets who had come back, those willing to talk. Many would not, about this or much else concerning the war. Frankly, many of them wanted to get loaded and party, and to put much of what happened out of their mind... at least when they could. I suspect that it's always there. (my own father didn't tell me about his combat experiences in WWII until I was 29, and he thought he didn't have long to live. he didn't)

As far as decorations go, I think you make a very good point. I really could care less about Kerry's decorations. I think he served honorably, at sea, and in the rivers of Vietnam, and the fact that it has become such a campaign issue bothers me quite a bit. He has brought some of that on himself, but he is influenced by his advisors. I think Bush's advisors are far worse. Kerry wouldn't have been my choice for the nomination, and I didn't vote for him in the primaries, but he will be a far better President than the current occupant of that office. In my opinion, of course.
