I guess you disagree with all those econ guys. They must not have a clue right?

Jobless recovery. Of course GDP will increase when you have massive government spending. Were you aware of that?

Not sure what race has to do with this discussion. When you have to resort to insults, you've lost the argument.

not race baiting. It's truth. Many people (batman jones, as an example) voted for Obama just to have the first (half) black president.

"Because if we are willing to work for it, and fight for it, and believe in it, then I am absolutely certain that generations from now, we will be able to look back and tell our children that this was the moment when we began to provide care for the sick and good jobs to the jobless; this was the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal; this was the moment when we ended a war and secured our nation and restored our image as the last, best hope on earth. This was the moment—this was the time—when we came together to remake this great nation so that it may always reflect our very best selves and our highest ideals. Thank you, God bless you, and may God bless the United States of America. "

What a great speech. Too bad there are so many not willing to work or fight for those things.

Its a pretty interesting piece and I think there is something to what Shelby Steele says. I think though he is being a bit loose with his language has modern American Liberalism as what came out of the 1960's I don't think is so much seeing the America as categorically evil as a profound skepticism regarding American Exceptionalism. While there are certainly people who do qualify as the blame America first crowd. I don't think you could say that for most American Liberals and certainly not Obama. The problem that I see is that thanks to Reagan's rhetoric almost anything less than my country right or wrong is considered a lack of faith in the greatness of America.

If we are going to get into what is philosophically tripping up Obama I don't think it is that he see's America as categorically evil and he has to redeem it but that he sees the complexity of America and his governance is thus very complex. The problem is that complexity doesn't play well with the polls especially in a 24 hour news cycle. He is suffering the same problem that bedeviled Clinton in 1994 and did in GHW Bush in 1992. No one would accuse GHW Bush of being a Liberal or one who thought that America was categorically evil but Steele's specific criticisms about Obama would apply to GHW Bush, complicated plans that the public doesn't understand and do not see the benefit, a sense that the President doesn't relate to average people and is somehow different.

Taking away from this if Obama is going to survive he is going to have to take a page from Clinton and get back to basics with his message, simplify it. GHW Bush never was able to do that or even convince people in his own party that he understood them.

Overall an interesting piece but I am disappointed that Steele brought this up.
While I can understand how this gets people like Tea Partiers worked up but Shelby Steele should know better that this is part of the diplomatic mission that every president has to do. Other presidents have bowed, held hands and even kissed foreign leaders. That has nothign to do with counter-culture or self-effacement.

Surely you aren't implying that batmanjones lacks the intelligence to vote for someone based on proposed policies and personality and wouldn't solely vote for somebody based on the color of his skin.

Obama can't directly admit that he basically hates America, but we have seen some clues. The "bitter clingers" remark, his wife saying she had never been proud of America until Barack ran for the presidency, and being a 20 year member of Rev. "G-D America" Wright's church. It looks like a pattern in which he really hates the country that he now leads.

That's a pattern alright. that's a pattern of things taken out of context some of which aren't even relevant.

Do you think Clinging to fundamentalism and fear of losing guns is America? For Obama to speak against that is speaking against America?

You have not rev. Wright's books or sermons, obviously. Do that for context and it makes sense.

What the first lady said in context also makes sense, and isn't a slam on America at all, and doesn't show Obama hating America at all.

so I see, after your recent b****ing falsely accusing Obama of calling people racists, its perfectly alright for you and texxx to claim people voted for Obama cause he's black.

lord have mercy, it would be funny if it weren't so sad

The "bitter clingers" remark was only referring to a subset of Americans not America as a whole. That would be like you saying "I hate those NY Liberals" and then someone else saying see you hate America since NY Liberals are Americans."

There is a difference between not being proud, hating and considering something a categorical evil. I am not proud of how the Rockets are playing this season (I am pissed which is why I am spending time here instead of the GARM) but that doesn't mean I hate the Rockets (that is the Dallas Mavericks) or that I think the Rockets are a categorical evil (that is the Utah Jazz).

Anyway it makes no sense that if you hated the country why you would even go through the trouble of becoming the President that takes a huge toll on your personal life. I mean why I hate the Mavs but I am not going to go through the trouble of trying to amass a fortune and sweet talk the NBA just to buy the Mavs.

This is an essential problem that I noted with Steele's analysis mistaking skepticism and even criticism of something as hate or as seeing something as evil. I mean if we apply that standard then almost every Clutchfan actually hates the Rockets and think they are evil and has for for years.
