The frito pie at Champions Sports Bar in Austin on 4th and Trinity is amazing, the best I've had since the high school lunch line
I never order it, but every year for the super bowl, my mom makes a big pot of chili and I'll eat a couple of frito pies with the left over chili in the days after the game. I like mine with just lots of onions, red and white. Where was the first time you ever had a frito pie? I remember when I was a kid and playing in little league for the first year, the snack bar there had frito pies. I even got to make them when it was my turn to work in the snack bar.
I had a really awesome Frito Pie somewhere in Austin last year... it was huge, served in a pie pan. I'm pretty sure it was South Congress, at that Doc's place. The bar was a turd but that Frito Pie killed!
That's the way I remember having it and making it. Stacking layers of fritos and chilli and baking it like lasagna. Haven't had Frito pie in years and no idea where to get it here so maybe I'll make some and give my friends a real taste of Texas..
I've tried the Frito Pie that Smokey Mo's Barbecue serves, it's definitely a unique take on an old classic. They smother a bowl of fritos with their chopped beef brisket & bbq sauce and cover it with cheddar cheese. IMO, not quite as good as a traditional 'chili' pie, but pretty damn good nonetheless.
I eat Frito Pie with homemade chili only Here's my easy chili recipe- take 1 lb of hamburger meat and brown it - drain all the grease and then put salt pepper and Tony's seasoning to taste. throw that in the crock pot on low heat for about 6 hrs along with these items: 1 can Bush's pinto beans (16 oz) 1 can diced tomatoes (14.5 oz) 1 fresh bell pepper medium diced 1 fresh white onion medium diced 1 jar of Trappey's jalepenos diced by hand (leave in seeds for extra hotness) Louisiana hot sauce (a few drops for taste, I always add more at the end) and the secret ingredient is 1 Hidden Valley Ranch Dressing Mix packet - helps thicken up the Chili and gives it an extra kick of flavor Simple recipe to make chili from and it tastes badass- I always throw some on top of some Fritos with some shredded cheddar cheese and lots of Louisiana hot sauce.
Beans huh? Prepare to be flamed. But seriously this sounds like a very unique chili recipe that I'll try out. Well minus the beans of course.
Your mention of the high school lunch line reminds me of a variation served in the Klein ISD back in the day...Mexican Jambalaya. A bowl of white rice, topped with Fritos, chili, shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes and cheese. Good stuff, Maynerd.
In my high school, we had cheetos pie. Basically a normal cheesy cheetos covered in chili. Looked like a plate of puke. I used to get doritos pie.. man that was good.
My freshman year in college someone went around the campus leaving gig em pies. It was a pie pan, in a pie box, covered with foil. The "pie" was full of $h*t.
