Didn't say the show was bad...just that the audience it may have been targeting were probably too busy watching sports.

You hardly see sports-drama shows on television I think there is a reason for that.

If you watched the show, you'd know that they were definitely not just targeting the football-watching crowd, and that football was hardly the centerpiece of show. In fact, this may have been the biggest failure with the marketing - they didn't do a good job selling this as not simply just a football show.

Didn't say they were just targeting a one certain audience, just that the audience they may have been targeting is one that is probably watching NBA or MLB instead.

Not saying the entire show was based around football.

The shows main apeal was definitely its depth with the characters and their relationships, like mentioned before, the focus of the story is the struggle people of all backgrounds and positions go through in everyday life. Matt Saracen in season 4 "The Son" might have been my favorite episode of the show other than the pilot.

"The Son" is one of the best episodes of any show I've ever seen. Saracen's acting was about as real and genuine as I've seen from any actor on TV. Just amazing!

completely agree and certainly the best (and most real) portrayal of a marriage on tv, it was so much more than football, its in my top 5

Consider the popularity of Mad Men and the central marriage there (at least in seasons 1-3) versus the marriage at the center of FNL. It makes Mad Men look like a terrible high school drama production, with high school actors. (And I say that as someone who likes Mad Men just fine.)

    Epic bump, I know.

Its just I picked up on Friday Night Lights WAY after everyone else. That being said, I had to state how incredible this show is to watch. Peter Berg and his writers did such an amazing job with this show.

I blew through the first 3 seasons and am trying to slow down and savor the final 2 seasons. I am in the last 3 episodes of season 4 right now.

Someone mentioned "The Son" earlier. Fantastic episode. My personal favorite moments are the scenes where Smash leaves for Texas A&M and the scene where Jason Street reconciles with his fiance and their child.

If you haven't seen this show, and you have Netflix please give the pilot a shot. Its just terrific.

truly one of my top 3 shows of all time. Character development at its finest, you felt for their situations, like you mentioned with Smash, Jason, and Matt.

I would agree. This show is on par and past many of the shows you expect on basic (FX/AMC) and premium (HBO/SHO) channels. The most amazing part is they did this show without a huge budget because it never garnered the attention it deserved.

Smash's Mom was my favorite character from the show, and she was the epitome of the depth they could get out of a character that was only in a few episodes throughout the entire series.

On episode 13 pretty good, but not in my top shows. It's early this could change.

Season 1 is amazing, first half of season 2 is horrid, but after that the show picks right back up until the finish line

I finished binge watching this show on Netflix. I'm glad I decided to give it a shot. This is one of the best dramas I've watched. The character development and relationships are some of the most real characters and situations in a TV show ever. Football itself wasn't the focus of the story, it was merely a vessel for the stories to frame around.

While the show wasn't full of jaw-dropping "oh, ****" drama, it made you really care about the characters and want to finish their story. I can't think of many other shows that can do that. I'd highly recommend this show.
