There's something not quite right about that Times article.

For one thing, it says the Le Monde poll shows that 1/3 of respondents wanted Iraq to win. The closest I see is 1/4 feel they are on Iraq's side.

Also, they talk about World War I as if the French and English were just trying to protect themselves from the big bad Germans. The truth is England, France, and Germany were all chomping at the bit to fight each other. France was one of the most belligerent agents in that war. The only reason France was liberated was because they bit off more than they could chew. They were really invaded in the way, say, Kuwait was.

Apart from the article, I would point out counter-examples of vandalism, but sino is right. Desecrating the graves of the dead is just plain low. I won't defend my countrymen on this; that was just wrong.

Disagreeing is one thing, but to go over there and deface the monuments of soldiers that defended your country is sad and pathetic.

Who has ever posted on this board that something like this is acceptable?

Yeah I know who I am. I support France's right to tell the Americans to piss off. But, I've already condemned desecrating the tomb. Don't pretend that the French are all happy about this vandalism; they're not. Complain about the Le Monde poll if you want to gripe at the French about something.

Speaking of, only 65% of the French think the US started this war. I'm surprised the number is so low.

    Juan Valdez,

Why do you think that the numbers are low? Clearly the educated 35% realize that this is not a new war but a continuation of the first Gulf War.

Saddam signed a cease fire and agreed to terms that allowed him to stay in power and for us to stop the bombing, well, he ignored his agreements, and now the bombing is starting again.

Not really that hard to understand, and I applaud the 35% of the French that get it.

Actually, if you look at the poll, the number is closer to 12% that think Iraq started the war, with the remainder either not answering or undecided.

    To be fair...nobody has.

But I'll go so far as to say that if a nation set Paris on fire, the only reason we should go over there is to provide marshmellows.

And Americans have the right to tell the French to go screw themselves. But I'm guessing the percentage is low becaus ethe other percentage might have heard that some in the French companies were helping Saddam build freaking nuclear weapon.

I'm totaly with you on this one.
Though I support France's position, I feel vandalism is a low hit.But contrairly to what Sinohero said,I think you shouldn't judge all French on what a few morons did.
Concerning the poll,TF1 is NOT a reliable source as it is a very subjective TV channel(just like Fox news in US).On the other hand I'm quite surprised Le Monde printed this poll out...
In other words this poll is not representitive of French opinion...Support Saddam? Are you crazy?!

PS:I have more to say but i think it is wiser to shut up as i might offend a lote of ppl here...

I wish the French would uncover and arrest a massive Iraqui/Al Qaeda terror plot that involved The Louvre. Maybe then they wouldn't be so self-satisfied.

Wow, I'm surprised. I didn't really consider the original source, but I figured if Le Monde printed it, it was golden. You don't think the poll is legit, even though it has Le Monde's stamp of approval?
