Certainly I am that, but I think you will find I am pretty much anti ANY religion.......it is just yours is more in the news these days. DD
I agree with this. I have my own opinions on this kind of stuff, but the government should not be involved. On a related note, this video of a woman walking down the street in Iran with her hair down makes me feel proud. http://edition.cnn.com/video/#/video/world/2009/06/23/watson.iranian.woman.scarf.cnn
Order those pentecostal women to put on some pants once in a while instead of those skirts and dresses....But those women are allowed to denounce the religious principle they're brought up in and choose another route to live, without a law in place to forbid the pentecostal practice. As suppressive and suffocating that the burka tradition is, it should be the same...(for now, cuz I really don't blame France for wanting the ban) No one wants to tell the men to their faces stop being misogynist assholes. So, its gonna require some of that happening, and them to consider the negative aspect before there's more widespread change.
LOL - i just accidently posted this another thread. Here it is again -- I can't believe what I just read. Any American defending this stance is simply baffling. This youtube video suggests that a large % of children under the age of 20 in France are Muslims. Also, it states that by 2027, "1 in 5 Frenchman will be Muslim". Im not sure how accurate this is but it also says that "in 39 years, France will be an Islamic Republic". Link for Video
(To me) a big part of religion or any similar institution is looking and dressing the part. Advancements in clothing play a role simply cuz it exists. If there wasn't the abundant clothing material and know-how to make a burka (lacking within primitive tribes), there wouldnt be a need to even make something like that into religious law. Some bushmen in Botswana look over at their women and decide they must all be covered up head to foot in submissiveness to their men. "Yes! uh...how are we gonna use our spears to do that exactly?" Can't people in a nudist colony practice the same religions everyone else does? Clothing or lack of it doesnt preclude anyone from worship. When its time to face Mecca but someone's in the middle of a shower, are they not allowed to pray? (Talk about freedom! Lets make ALL clothes optional!)
Major already addressed this in part, but I'll add to it. What Obama is talking about here, and what they have in France aren't the same thing at all. Obama certainly isn't modeling anything after the French system.
Interesting points all around, but did the French consider what would actually happen if the law is passed? The whole point of the law is (allegedly) to prevent the women who are forced to wear the niqaab from being oppressed. So, basically the French are saying you cannot wear it in public places. What they fail to realize is that the women who belong to these extreme families are able to go in public ONLY b/c of the niqaab! So what happens when there is no niqaab? Will these families magically just be like, "oh well, i guess you can go and do as you please!" Yeah right. These women will be even MORE oppressed and not even allowed to go outside! However, I would agree with a law in extremist Muslim countries that said you are not required to wear a niqaab (as they do in KSA).
^ a comment from that link. my stance is that the burka already is radical, very radical. i don't know how this will pan out but debate on this issue is healthy.
i know max, i get you. however, people don't seem to be giving me the benefit of the doubt in this thread. this is not a black and white issue.
You, naturally, ignore the fact that a good number of these women wear it because they see it as adherence to their faith. For those women, you've given them a great choice...either run afoul of the law and risk arrest or don't leave the house. You are such a prince.
