What? Where did I say that.......I don't want us to go into any country..... Come on now.......I have enough views on the edge, I don't need any more. DD
This doesn't make any sense DaDa. If they banned people of African decent from wearing their garb would be supporting that? I don't like that many women are forced to cover their heads, but many of them embrace it as an aspect of their religion. I wouldn't be in favor of the US outlawing what the Amish wear, what the Mormon fundamentalists wear, etc. I can't even believe you think this is a good thing.
I think its great you think like that, just apply this thought process to other countries as well.......BUT you are being a hypocrite, just go through the Iran thread. BTW the hijab is required in Islam.... the niqaab is not.....
Chris, Isn't there some discussion about this among Muslim scholars as to what is and is not required. I have read that, but would like to hear your thoughts on it. DD
Your desire to have government support your crusade against religion with legal action is not so democratic of you.
It seems odd that you are pro-choice (i.e. government should stay out of a woman's right to make a choice), but you are O.K. with the French government telling women what they can wear.
I think his stance on what government should and should not do is based more on what he personally approves of or doesn't. This is a common trait, so it's not surprising. I have no moral objection to abortion=Government should stay out of a woman's right to choose! I hate Islam=Government should force a woman to disobey her belief system!
For consistencies sake, would you be for a dominatrix ban in France? Because of the subservient nature.
Oh I didn't read it right. Now that you've clarified that the law states that women aren't required to wear it, I'm all for it. I was under the impression that the law was telling them they weren't allowed to.
It IS about telling them they aren't allowed to wear it. From the article A cross-party panel of 32 lawmakers will investigate whether the traditional Muslim garment poses a threat to the secular nature of the French constitution, Agence France-Presse reported. They are due to report back with their recommendations in six months. Last week 57 lawmakers -- led by communist legislator Andre Gerin -- signed a petition calling for a study into the feasibility of legislation to ban the burka in public places.
That is a good point, you guys are shooting holes in my argument.....ok.....that is it....you guys are right. The French government should stay out of what a woman can and can not wear. I am convinced, I was wrong. I would be in favor of a law saying that no one can FORCE them to wear it though..... DD
In France, up until now, women were free to wear or not wear the Burka. That is more freedom for women than not allowing the women to wear Burkas at all. It's a horrible, oppressive, and discriminatory idea.
