Lin's shooting percentage, with patience, is climbing back up to 40%. Westbrook 41% J-Lin 40.7% R-Felton 40.3% Ellis 40% Jenning 39% D-Will 38%
Exactly. That was exactly the point I was trying to make. It's been fans and the media who've been saying that Lin and Harden can't mesh, other people who said they needed two basketballs; meanwhile Lin and Harden seems happy for each other when they succeed, seem fine giving the ball to each other and setting screens for each other, and laugh together during photoshoots.
Well I disagree. He doesn't get nearly enough opportunities, unless he jacks up and forces shots outside of the context of the offensive set like you apparently want him to. Yesterday's game was very very different and the coaches made clear changes in the offensive scheme. Then they're surprised he is doing well in it?? I swear its like McHale's being obtuse on purpose just to f with me. McHale: "Uhhh, hey Sampson, why is Lin driving and being more aggressive today and not in the previous ganes ?? I've been telling him he'll be fine and to be aggressive the whole season. It must be cuz he's more comfortable in NY, maybe its an Asian thing, I don't know??" Sampson: "Maybe he's just timid by nature. All I know is Toney stays aggressive and jacks up shots all the time. It's that Lin kid I tell you. He needs to just be aggressive and take shots when it comes, like TD. We should slowly marginalize Lin and start TD soon, I think. Me: "Maybe it's cuz you're f***in giving him screens now and calling plays for him, you fn arsehole. Maybe he's a better PG than SG, ya think. Smh. McHale & Sampson: I don't think so. I don't think one thing has to do with another. It's just Lin choosing not to be aggressive. Me: "GTFO."
everyone seems to know it except you for... you could always go do the research and cite statistics yourself.
According to Synergy Sports... Jeremy Lin Total Offensive Plays - 338 Plays off screens - 7 (2.1%) PnR Ball Handler - 99 (29.3%) James Harden Total Offensive Plays - 567 Plays off screens - 18 (3.2%) PnR Ball Handler - 160 (28.2%) Raymond Felton Total Offensive Plays - 468 Plays off screens - 20 (4.3%) PnR Ball Handler - 229 (48.7%) Tony Parker Total Offensive Plays - 449 Plays off screens - 24 (5.3%) PnR Ball Handler - 199 (44.3%) So yes, Lin gets fewer screens than Harden as a percentage of plays, fewer total PnR opportunities than Harden, and Harden AND Lin both get fewer screens combined than Tony Parker OR Raymond Felton. The Rockets don't run a very high number of screen plays run for them at this point. Keep in mind that screen numbers are directly linked to the type of offense implemented by the coach, so for example Chris Paul only runs plays off screens 1.1% of the time and Russell Westbrook 1.4% of the time. Interestingly, Kevin Durant gets a screen run for him 11.4% of the time. It depends a lot on whether you're asking if they are making a play off a screen (usually a screen and shoot) or a pick (for a PnR) or you're simply talking about screens in order to free Lin to run a different play (not tracked by Synergy). Given that the Rockets have only run a grand total of 2655 offensive plays, Harden runs almost as many plays as Kevin Durant (579/2473). That said, I think it's probably correct that Lin doesn't get as many screens as he did in NY. D'Antoni is well known for the use of screens to break free shooters and the point guard. Woodson has retained many of D'Antoni's offensive sets and you still see them used aggressively for Felton (as well as Kidd).
No. The coaches made a specific strategic change for skin this game and during the SAS game. It doesn't mean he'll be brilliant every game that screens are set for him, but its definitely putting him at a better place to be more effective and for us to have a more effective team
skewed from a few games where lin actually had the ball in his hands. most would agree lin has been ordered to hand it off to others and stand in the corner. hence all the recent "bring lin off the bench" articles from si and espn.
That's pretty much it, depends if you think Lin is being passive because the coaches tell him to or Lin himself. Since he doesn't take that many shots per game then there wouldn't be a need to screen for him. For sure the system isn't the same as Spurs or Knicks though.
Our record is 12 and 12. Lin has had a total of 7 screens over 24 games. 7/24 = 0.291 screen plays per game.
Not sure if this has been brought up, but Asik is probably not only the best PnR big man (although he's certainly not horrible), but prob the worst combo for Lin. Lin, unlike Harden, relies the screen to get straight line drives primarily and while he is a good passer with good vision, he doesnt have the craftiness of a Harden to navigate tight spaces and use a bounce pass to thread the needle for a rolling pass to Asik (who granted doesnt have the greatest hands anyways). Nor can he throw it up to Asik for lobs like he did with Tyson Chandler (not necessarily to alley oop, but have him catch it above the defenders). But the biggest issue with Lin + Asik on the PnR , which was also mentioned in that ESPN article about benching Lin to fully utilize him, is that Asik isnt a threat offensively to garner the attention of the screener defender, so both of the defenders can often time front him and shade him and force Lin to drive into help D or find a tough passing window. Thats why Lin needs to atleast get back to shooting a decent jumpshot clip at midrange to change that defense up or atleast learn to keep his dribble alive and creatively find open lanes or kick it out more. Often time he either drives it all the way for all or nothing or he picks up his dribble
I saw specifc sets that weren't being allowed, being allowed to develop. Lin's teammates are not avoiding coming up for a screen for Lin because they don't trust him, it's cuz it is not the play that was called. The play is for Omer to pick Harden to set him free.
Is there a difference between a "screen" and a "pick"? I thought the terms were interchangeable. The limitation with Synergy's stats is that they only register plays that end in a shot attempt or turnover. If the biggest problem with Lin this year has been his passiveness, then its possible he's gotten more picks/screens set for him but he didn't take advantage of them.
Lin missing 2 assist in stats vs. Knicks Did anybody notice that Lin should have 10 assists instead of 8. Hi, There are two assists missing. One is in the first quater with 7:08 left. When Asik inbound the ball to Jeremy, he then pass it to Parson for the dunk. It is Jeremy who pass the ball, not Asik. You may view the video here: http://knicksnow.com/videos/2251/knick-vs-rockets-postgame-highlights#.UNDkAnfhdIR around 30 sec. <iframe src="http://www.msg.com/swf/tpPlayer/player.html?mediaId=2317327540" width="620" height="349" frameborder="0" scrolling="no"></iframe> Another one is in the forth quater with 3:55 left. Jeremy pass the ball to Harden and Harden made the jump shoot. Jeremy should have an assist but not recorded. He should have a double-double. Is there anyway to report and get it fix?
screens don't just come when they feel like it, it's not streetball. And oftentimes, Lin calls a pick and it doesn't even come. In addition, a two-man pick n roll is not that effective unless everyone's situated correctly for the kickout 3 etc..
Score log can be misleading sometimes. For example, with 2:08 left in the second quarter, Delfino passed to Harden who scored -- the score log gave it an assist to Jeremy Lin. So that's one he shouldn't have gotten to balance one that he should have had. The fourth quarter pass to Harden probably should have been an assist... not sure how they score it though when Harden dribbled and then pulled up.
