CBA changed salary floor penalty 1) Team loses luxury tax money for not meeting the floor. (I think this season it will only be 50%) 2) Team losses cap space under the salary floor at the start of the season dramatically limiting ability to add salary in trades during season. 3) Team pays salary to NBA for under floor such that the money is spread to every NBA player.
Say a team drafted a PG and you want to teach him how to play a 2-man game with a center. You want him to have 3 guys that can spread the floor. Cam fits that role.
Great job Dude! From this list I'd probably go a different route, I like FVV, but not at that money. I also like Tre Jones, but he's small and not a great 3pt shooter. If FVV comes at a decent rate for 3 years, then I think that works, but at $46M that would eat of too much of our cap. I'd rather throw a 24-26M at Austin Reaves and let him work in the backcourt with JG. He's got some playmaking skills, is a 40% 3pt shooter and won't hurt us on defense. Plus he's versatile enough to play in backcourt or as a small ball wing. If we're going to invest, I'd rather go with a younger guy (25) that has played at a high-level and has versatility/skills. We're also trying to build a culture, so adding a guy like Grant Williams gives Ime someone he's familiar with and has also played in the play-offs at a high-level. He can play both SF/PF and is only 24. At the 5, Brook Lopez fits all of our needs--defense, shooting, culture/mentor and bonus of championship experience. If he's not available, then Mason Plumlee would be a solid guy to slot behind Sengun. I love Poeltl, but see him as part of TOR future and maybe overkill for what we're looking for. The only SF I like on that list is Jae Crowder, although older he's a daawg and provides a solid 3/D vet. I also like Bruce Brown for his defense, offensive skills and championship experience and would be someone I'd love for us to get, if we don't go the other routes.
He fits the role of a floor spacer but he can't show him how to run the 2 man game. A coach can tell him what to do, a shooter can give him space to do it - FVV can physically show him how to do it. In addition, FVV can be a floor spacer for Amen as well. And, I like Cam Johnson. I'm just saying I see the Rockets' bigger plan.
The best teacher is experience. Getting players capable of providing an opportunity to learn efficiently is key to the develop of Amen. Ideally, 4 shooters around Amen would be best. Also, when Amen is capable of leading the team, Cam is a great complement to Amen and fits with the long, switchable defenders the Rockets have been adding to team. Caveat: I'm all in on Amen. Cam, FVV, Lopez, and/or Reaves will help him now and in the future.
We only HAVE to spend it by the trade deadline though. Not prior to game 1 Ie, one option would be to wait, and use our cap space to acquire future assets by a team wanting to salary dump. Then if nobody dumps, all current players get a current year raise. No big deal. I disagree with that course of action, and also don't see it as a direction the Rockets organisation is pursuing. Just pointing out that we don't HAVE to spend in free agency.
I think Udoka is wanting veterans who can play defense. I think we first go after Brook Lopez, overpaying him with 2 years for 42 million and keep reminding him in negotiations that Texas do not have income tax. He had back surgery about 18 months ago and 35 years old, it would be wise for him to start on the bench and play 18-20 minutes a night. I would also place a team option on the 2nd year of his contract. He played very well last year and he will help Sengun and Jabari, with rebounding, physicality and how to play in the NBA in the paint. I think we will throw 30 million to Cam Johnson to piss Brooklyn off because they will have to match and this will hurt Brooklyn team in the future. However, I think we are seriously going after Dillion Brooks who can play defense, bring physicality and a bully. Also, I know this is not a sexy players for us but Harrison Barnes can still play defense and shoot around 37% around the 3 point line. Toronto has money and they are not letting FVV leave Canada. The GM knows nobody is going to Toronto in free agency so they are going to CRAZY over pay him. Udoka do not like Harden so we might sign Pat Beverly or Tre Jones. I can see Amen playing 20 to 24 minutes, and would be a great defender for us and having Pat Beverly would increase pressure on opponents offense. we would have two all defense team guys on our team with Dillion Brooks and Brook Lopez…..Lopez was a first teamer and Dillion was a second teamer and Pat Beverly was a former all defense guy as well.
I think it’s less likely that FVV signs with Houston after the Amen selection. FVV is going to want a 4 year deal where he’s not keeping the seat warm for someone else. And he probably isn’t excited to go to a 22-win team. I continue to believe that Stone needs to find a great veteran point guard via trade. We have the assets to do it. It doesn’t have to be FVV or bust, Harden or bust. There are other options out there. We just need Stone to get it done.
Please pay attention !! Trade Sengun, Martin, Tate & Christopher with 4 Nets first rounders for Bridges and Can Johnson. Thats what it will take to make a successful trade. Y
We need to spend the minimum. The CBA has changed and there are consequences outside spreading the money to our guys.
Sengun is not going anywhere. Stop spamming with this ridiculous sh*t. Cam Johnson is a one trick pony and is extremely overated on this board. Take Sengun out and I’m ok for the rest for Bridges, which I really think has a shot at the trade deadline unless someone beats us to the punch or the Nets pull off a Dame or Jaylen Brown trade.
I have to say, I'm completely, absolutely underwhelmed by this summers FAs. There's nobody on OP's list that screams, "We simply HAVE to sign this guy!" It's like we've all been eating crap food for the last 3 years and are dying for a gourmet meal, and now we find ourselves looking at a Der Weinerschnitzel menu.
