Besides Greenard - the only guys who do it for me from this list are Shultz, Nelson,Fairbairn, Fant, Singletary, and Noah Brown, Not sure you would use up the majority of the cap on these guys. Remains to be seen how many vets would be willing to come play for DeMeco on team friendly deals and how many offensive skill players would want to align with CJ. I still think we have buying power.
Perryman's our 4th best in tackles and I like Thomas too. Thomas has forced a couple fumbles and isn't bad at tackling. I'd add those two to your list if we can afford them.
$ values represent year 1 cap hit. Lets see how close we get to $72M. Sheldon Rankins - upgrade to Wilkins/Jones $20M Dalton Schultz - re-sign - $6M Derek Barnett - re-sign one of Barnett/Hughes $3M Jerry Hughes Steven Nelson - re-sign $10M Kaimi Fairbairn - re-sign $2M Eric Murray - let walk Hassan Ridgeway - let walk George Fant - too expensive to re-sign Devin Singletary - re-sign $4M Cameron Johnston - let walk Noah Brown - let walk Denzel Perryman - replace with draft Tavierre Thomas - re-sign or replace $5M Scott Quessenberry - let walk Dare Ogunbowale - re-sign $1M Jon Weeks - re-sign $1M Neville Hewitt. - let walk Jon Greenard - re-sign $12M Charlie Heck - re-sign $3M Blake Cashman - re-sign $8M That’s $75M including a marquee DT signing. Seems entirely reasonable to make a premier outside FA signing and still keep the key internal FAs.
That's depressing. We will be supplementing our team with draft picks only it looks like there. Ugh. If only we were a team that could afford free agents. I can't get too excited over just drafting inexperienced pro level players.
There are many FAs who signed one year prove it deals. We want some back and it will cost more to get them back.
You don’t build a dynasty through free agency. You build through the draft anyway. Free agency is to supplement and that’s what you’re doing this summer. If they can stay healthy the Texans already have the most important positions filled with current or future pro bowlers: CJ, Tunsil, WAJ, Stingley. Think of it this way…You bring this whole team back with 2+ significant upgrades (1 free agent plus draft), a little bit more depth, and another year of development from the young core. Thats a contender next year with league average health.
I’d do it. Resign Greenard and Nelson as priorities. With Sting, Pitre, Harris, and Anderson one year further along that’s setup to be a nasty defense. Need to catch a sliding offensive talent with the CLE pick. TE, G, and RB are all positions that tend to fall on draft day and we have needs there. Maybe Kenyon Green will finally be healthy and productive and for god sakes keep Howard at RT and stop moving him to G!
Reader/ Queen/ Uche(for depth) is still completely possible if you can sign Nelson to a 2 year deal instead of the mercenary contract. Then, You could probably get an extra 6 milly in cap space from reworking Howard's and Collins contracts. If Nelson wants more more $, Emmanuel Moseley could thrive here. We be like Rehab U up in here and he's familiar with Meco. Area 51/ Reader/ Collins-Tart/ Greenard Harris/ Cashman/ Queen Stingley / Nelson or Emmanuel Ward-rook / Pitre
Free agency will be almost exclusively about the defense in my opinion. Other than Schultz I think the offense is pretty well situated. I continue to add to it with draft picks but its the defensive side of the ball where they need guys they can count on to contribute next season. So here is my plan were I Caserio: Player - Value* Sheldon Rankins - $7M Derek Barnett - $1.5M Jerry Hughes - Walk Steven Nelson - Walk Eric Murray - Walk Hassan Ridgeway - Walk Denzel Perryman - Walk Tavierre Thomas - Walk Neville Hewitt. - Walk Jon Greenard - $18M** Blake Cashman - $9M Thats spending about $35M on just those 4. Id budget about $50M on the defense overall. That leaves $22M to re-sign Schultz, sign the draft class and add depth pieces here and there. With the additional $15M Id aggressively pursue Azeez Al-Shaair and maybe Kristian Fulton. *: Value derived from spotrac.com or overthecap.com **: This is my max offer to Greenard. If he doesnt accept that I move on to throwing money at Bryce Huff ($9M) and AJ Epenesa ($5M) to play opposite Will Anderson. I think we save money that way but it does disrupt the defense to some degree.
The texans cap space is a bit of a lie. We have tons of people on 1 year contracts so lots of positions to fill.
Hopefully we draft some start worthy players to help make a positive impact. No injury prone players please!
After seeing all the injuries. Texans need to go get them a WR1. You can’t rely on Collins who is injury prone and Dell who is a buck sixty five dripping wet. Nothing wrong with being gluttonous at that position.
And a Stud RB wouldn't hurt either. I'm hoping for something like this in the draft. Speed/Speed and more Speed on both sides of the ball. 1.Legette WR South Carolins 2. Benson RB Fla. St. 2. Trade up for Cooper A&M LB. 4. Rod Moore S Michigan
PICK: 26 RND: 1 (HOU) T'Vondre SWEAT PICK: 49 RND: 2 (HOU) Byron MURPHY II PICK: 92 RND: 3 (HOU) Braelon ALLEN PICK: 117 RND: 4 (HOU) Cam HART PICK: 126 RND: 4 (HOU) Payton WILSON PICK: 154 RND: 5 (HOU) Tre HARRIS PICK: 234 RND: 7 (HOU) Oronde GADSDEN II PICK: 238 RND: 7 (HOU) Kaimon RUCKER
Agree on the need for speed. I see a big drop off from the top 4 receivers (Bowers included) to the next group. If one of them doesn’t drop far enough to make a trade up feasible then I’d probably go defense or oline in first round and wait until the 2nd for WR. This assumes we reinforce the defensive front 7 in free agency: 1. Cooper DeJean 2. Jermaine Burton 3. Running back with speed that thrives in zone 4. Cooper Beebe
Dont like Beebe for a WCO. I've got Burton going late 3rd/Early 4th Benson is a solid top 50 pick. Bucky Irving is a guy I really like. I've got him going Early to mid 3rd.
